View Full Version : Why NO talk on talksback?

A friend of mine and fan of this site asked me last week, "What's up with your website boy?, there's no talk on there, theres nobody going after anybody, Lukelakers isn't on there anymore, what's going on?........... I hadn't really thought about it much or noticed until he pointed it out to me..............

Last year this guy named Eric Bischoff who's been in Pro Wrestling for 20+ years wrote a book called "Controversy Creates Cash" well is he right? Even though we don't make any money on this site, we do keep track of posts and hits etc. Now that I look into it a little more, our numbers are down from last year..............Why is that? Well there's not much controversy right now...........

Last year there were big stories during Basketball season, right now there isn't............

At this time last year, we had the Controversy around C.G Finney, they brought in a core of new players and started blowing out opponents left & right, there was a bunch of threads started and the debating started about Private Schools recruiting and this and that, DrewVT had to ban people and delete threads, which started a controversy over his banning of Lukelakers....................In threads pertaining to Finney and the Controversy surround them we had big, big numbers

A thread started on 2-11-09 by Jetcole title Public/Private in Class D received 15, 764 views, with 350 posts..........

We had the Nazareth Controversy about moving down to Class C and Chris Metcalf wrote a column about it that started all kinds of conversation on here.........

Why no talk now?

I noticed that too..I thought maybe it was because of the holiday season and people were busy with family and traveling etc. But yeah it does seem like threads aren't as active as they were this time last year

People also get all bent out of shape on many subjects. If you question how good a team or a player is people just go ballistic and it really isn't worth it many times. People want this to turn into the same everyone gets a ribbon mentality that we see in life today.

OK then. Prattsburgh only wins because they recruit. No, wait, that was Aquinas ? I'm confused now. Bath cheats and uses steroids. The D & C has a tribunal where they burn names of any player being considered for an all star team from a school more than 5 miles outsisde the city. The only cheerleaders considered worthy are those blonde, bombshells that cheer on the Dallas Cowboys sidelines.. otherwise, cheerleaders, definitely are non-athletes, UNC is great, both the team and the moderator... NOT... The corn fed farm boys could easily compete with the gun slinging urban cowboys in any sport... don't matter the size school tex,

That should get ya started....

I was wondering that too. I've looked at threads from last year and saw that a lot of people from last year don't post or rarely post on here at all. Maybe thats part of the problem.

You can allow controversy without letting it get out of hand. IMO, the moderators on this site are very PC, or should I say too conservative. I am not talking political either.

There really is no First Amendment here. You only get to post what the moderators allow.

All in all I like the site.

I have been in marketing for many years. I have learned that controversy sells big time.

It's because I got laid off from The Batavian :)

Seriously, the GR traffic is down because our more vocal members are in college, The Daily News really does a crappy job of covering high school sports now and the love of sports just isn't here now. I feel like our community has been shafted with sports coverage and the fans just don't get the info they used to.
I think this is a cycle. I'm willing to bet that something will happen and we will spike again.

I think that Proudest Monkey has taken a break from Talksback. Without him, who do we get our foolish ramblings from. Speaking of LukeLakers, I saw him tonight announcing a basketball game in Prattsburgh. Apparently he has been demoted to announcer from broadcaster. lol

I think a lot more coaches are now aware of this site and other internet forums and give their kids the "I don't want to find team information on that Talksback website" during pre-season. We certainly have a lot more readers.

I disagree. Kids are a lot busier in college and tend to branch out rather than keeping talking about high school. I know when I'm in college next fall I will probably post less

Very true, i think alot of coaches do not want the players on this site at all, reading or posting.

Also alot of the new members act dumb and just post foolish post that make the school look awful.

But I used to watch 4 GR basketball games a night when I was in high school. Now that me, along with basically the entire core of the GR community from two years ago are now in college we don't get to see a lot of games and thus we don't know very much about the players and teams.

Now that I have been back home for a week I have been able to see a few games now and have posted some new content.

I actually wasn't finished with my Blog yesterday but had to leave work for an emergency call...........

Some more numbers to back up my point

Thread Titled Private School Classifications for 2009-2010 4,356 Views and 132 posts

Thread Titled Finney's Next Recruit 2,962 views and 102 posts

Thread Titled Will Finney beat Maple Grove? 8,724 views and 288 posts

Thread Titled Metcalf's Column on Nazareth 7,616 Views and 211 posts.

MY POINT is how come we can get all those hits and posts on controversial topics but I do Blogs that I honestly think are going to be big hits and get some good conversations going and I can't get nothing????

Examples

Thread Titled 43 and counting Leroy's Winning Streak, 324 views and NO posts.

Thread Titled Pay to Play, 342 views and 5 posts

Thread Titled where does your sport rank in popularity? 513 views and 9 posts.

Thread Titled Pressure and Sports Prodigies 581 views and 12 posts.

However, Drew posted a guest blog in my blog area titled, Fairport going non competitive which was "Controversial" and guess what? 2,421 views and 33 posts...........See my point?

Why can't we have intelligent conversations on here without it being controversial???

I am no way asking for controversy, or controversial topics to discuss. I'm simply trying to find out why we can't have better discussions about some of the good things....................

Its not that those threads are all controversial but people have strong feelings on them. If everyone agrees on the same topic you are not going to get alot of people posting about it. The less post the less the people read.

Most everything runs in cycles. That, plus some of the most central topics of discussion from last year have either been beaten to death or are no longer out there to discuss.

How much more can you discuss whether or not cheerleading's a sport? That argument goes in circles and never stops. So people give up, especially those that don't believe it is, because it has become a waste of time for them.

Jim Burke retired from Prattsburgh. He always drew a lot of conversation, didn't he?

Finney's boys are no longer in D2 or D1. That was a hot topic, if I recall correctly.

Just a few reasons in my opinion. Happy New Year.

ramblinman
12-29-2009, 04:50 PM
One more reason I believe traffic is down is that the posts are no longer immediate. I understand why, so as to weed out things such as personal attacks, but people used to eat up the "live" debate/discussion.

Have a safe beginning to the new year.

I agree with oldschool, it just seems like there was way too much censorship by the people who run the site. This should be a place where the 1st amendment should shine; instead there is too much concern over whose feelings may get hurt. In school they teach kids that the 1st amendment is the great thing about this country, but then we punish people for the views they have. The only censorship on a site like this should be if a person makes a 100% false statement that could slander the lively hood of the person.

I'll state my opinion. It is the members that make the site what it is, not moderators, not the sports, but the athletes. Back in the days of Clown and Striker, we were hated, but a lot of people joined and made things interesting, that you cannot kid yourself about.

Haha good to see the site would take a drop without us. But, yes, clown is right. Opinionated members who voice something that is controversial sparks conversation, not stating the facts. What they say may not be true, but it still brings out an in-depth discussion that draws opinions from many viewpoints.

Stop posting the first part of your post in the title bar. That's for a title of the post, like one word or phrase, because believe it or not most people don't read/notice the title bar of a post and you look like an idiot. I know the thread is kind of old, but I don't get on much and I'm just reading this for the first time.

The one thing that has made me stay away is the constant fighting. It's not debating back and forth, but people just looking for a an internet fight. I love the intelligent discussions, where people make valid points, but there is less and less of that. It's become more about trying to one up each other. That might be great for the short term traffic, but you lose a lot of people when this becomes the general mentality. You might pick up a few people who want to criticize one another, but you lose some of the intelligent posters and in the long run, those are the people that don't get banned, don't just decide they are bored and move to another site and add to the forum. I know a few people who stopped posting because of the reason above. They were regular readers and contributed with intelligent posts.

I've lurked around this site for quite a long time and although I don't post much and haven't had an account for long, I see the above mentality more and more on this site. Look at the gen football and the posts by RJE for an example. He's not trying to add to the site, he's looking to stir things up and is mostly negative. He even admitted he likes to play devils advocate. Or look at the whitman coach thread, it's so far off topic because one poster would rather try to start a fight and throw out ridiculous claims, than talk about the topic. Meanwhile, the person who is trying to talk about the topic is getting called out by other posters and being told to grow up. Or even the cheering section thread, it's full of name calling and petty posts. Over cheering sections, I didn't even know people took that much pride in being a fan. Great for them, but is there really a need to resort to name calling? Maybe that's what people want this site to be, but it's not what it started out as being. This was an alternative site to that type of banter and while there will always be some sort of controversy, it seems to be the norm not the exception. The first time I read this site, there was a long thread about the Bath/ER game. There were some controversy, but there were more posts on topic and people making points, not just posters trying to cut one another down.

There, my two cents after spending some time reading the site the past two days for the first time in a few months. I don't expect the site to change from where it is and that's too bad, because it seems like the majority of posters are high school kids and pretty soon, they'll lose interest and the numbers will drop. Hope this doesn't upset anyone, not my intention.
