I haven't heard but I doubt Section V has any independent choice in the matter - I believe it is decided at the State Level by the NYSPHSAA. I know the matter has come up for consideration by Exec. Committee for at least for the past two years, after ASA and NFHS both went to 43'. Both times NYSPHSAA elected to stay as is. Usually the Exec. Committee decision is reported in their year-end minutes. I haven't seen anything for this year yet.

They will also be looking again at the use of metal spikes since ASA rule change permitted them last year. NYSPHSAA decided to delay for one year. Look for both decisions to be published late this year or early in 2011.

It would have to be a state decision not individual sections and the I heard the state approved 43'. I also heard the voted down the metal cleats.

7-3 vote approved via tele conference by NYS. Now it comes down to a vote by the individual Sections but wouldn't make a lot of sense to vote down as Regionals and State Semi's + Finals should be at 43ft in 2011.

Makes sense to mirror the college game as all HS sports do when it comes to distances and field logistics. With the Lightning for 3 years we have preached 43ft and only play in these distance events starting in what was early on at 16U. Advantage goes to the kids that already have 1-2 plus seasons under their belt learning from there. It all comes down to movement and spin from this distance against better hitters. In HS some kids will still get away with throwing primarily fastballs even from 43ft because typically HS teams only have 1-3 "good hitters" if that, but to survive in college at really any level it will be a MUST to have the movement pitches from this distance.

It's about time. Now if they would only pass the metal cleats! :)

"Yesterday, via a conference call, the state voted 7-3 in favor of moving the pitching distance to 43 for both JV & Varsity starting in 2011. Section V Executive Committee stills needs to approve it at their December meeting, but I wanted to give you a heads up so you can have your pitchers adjust immediately.

In addition, the state voted down 9-1 the use of metal cleats. Just a reminder that if you travel out of state, where metal cleats are allowed, NYS teams are still NOT allowed to wear them."

I cannot imagine Section V being different than the remainder of the state therefore I assume we will go along with this.

I'm guessing 90 percent of high school softball players do not go on to play college. Change things for an overwhelming minority. That, in my opinion, defies logic.

This whole thing was disguised as a "safety issue." Yeah, right.

I guess we need to turn all HS sports into college sports. Start measuring all the b-ball courts in Section V; I'm sure most of them aren't 94-by-50, the required length and width by the NCAA. Oh, and I guess they'd better move back the boys' three-point line in basketball immediately, because that's not the same either.

What about modified? Is that 43 as well? If it's 40 for modified, and varsity/JV teams share the same field with modified, how's that supposed to work with the pitching rubber? You can't pitch from 43 with another rubber at 40.

All basketball courts might not be 94x50 but all rims are 10' and all foul lines are 15' and before the change last year the 3 point line was the same, and it is the same in the girls game. Don't they play sectional games at sites that have 94X50 courts????? Oh yeah, that's right basketball is different.
Don't boys baseball pitch from 60'6"? What is the difference? It is my feeling that softball is the only sport that plays with different "rules" than the upper levels.

As far as modified, put the varsity/jv at 43' and put in a temporary rubber for the modified. That is not a tough thing to do! They do it at Brockport State for sectionals, until this year :)

As far as your "90% of the players do not go on to college to play" What if they don't. How many baseball players go on to play in college, football, basketball, etc.........that is a VERY weak argument. OK, lets go back and use wood bats and no seam balls....... lets play slow pitch! Just because you do not want to see advancement in softball doesn't mean others don't.

It is unfortunate that in today's world it seems rules and modifications especially in sports are to reward the less athletic and talented. I guess that is why at the little league level now every kid gets a trophy. It may also explain why we have 100 different travel organizations in Rochester it seems with multiple teams at every level. Can you say "glorified little league"??? Because a kid plays for a travel team and gets a fancy sweatshirt or bat bag doesn't mean they are worthy of such. Years ago it was the select few that played travel and then everyone else.

When it comes to Varsity athletics all sports should in fact have the same dimensions as college. In softball it is even easier if schools simply use the long spike "hammer in" rubbers and move them from 40 to 43 ft as needed. Minimal cost outside of a few extra rubbers and some extra chalk to re-line the circle. With your logic maybe we should make HS football fields 80yds long and move the basketball rims to 8ft. After all we don't want to discourage the less athletic or skilled athlete. Life isn't fair and in the real world it is survival of the fittest whether it be in business or sports and it makes sense to start to teach kids that lesson at the HS Varsity level. HS Softball programs in Rochester should be challenging kids and motivating kids to strive to the level of the best players on their teams and stop dumming down practices and taking a "it's ok" approach. The sooner that happens the better the programs will be and you know what??? The better the marginal players will be as they are challenged to get better.
