I like the tournament format, wish Finger Lakes West had one. Not sure how it would be done with 9 teams though.

I've heard of other 9 team leagues get another school, usually not a very good one, to commit to play a game or two against the 9th best team. It certainly is exciting and would be great to see some kind of culminating tournament. I'd love to hear feedback from the Steuben teams whether having to schedule all those subsequent non-leaguers is an advantage or a burden.

It's called the C2 Sectional tournament.:) More seriously though, playing the same teams 3+ times in one year would be counterproductive. I would rather see the teams play in 1 or 2 in season tournaments against unfamiliar foes. Of course 2 in season tournaments would require a move back to 20 games and I am not holding my breath on that happening.

this is why i question the Steuben county teams who schedule non-league games with other league teams. In the SCL you play each team once. Last season Prattsburgh and Hammondsport played 4 times. 1 league game, 1 non league, in the 1st round of the county tournament and the 1st round of sectionals. Pburgh won all 4 games. 6 of the 10 teams in the league are in the D1 sectional bracket.

Playing the same team 4X in one season would be difficult to stomach. Unless you win all 4. :) I would love to see the FL West play Wayne County 2X again if we go back to a 20 game schedule. It was fun to watch and created a playoff atmosphere. It also gave the players some bragging rights.
Has anyone ever held a JV tournament for the small school league winners? I believe it would be great to send a representative from each league to compete in a few games over a single weekend. It would be a reward for a good year and something special for the younger players. Play it the weekend before sectionals start.
I could see teams from Wayne County, Genesee, Livingston D3, FL West, Allegheny, and Steuben leagues having a great weekend. Top 2 teams, record wise, get a bye in the single elimination tournament. 2 games Friday and Saturday, final on Sunday.
Nice big trophy for the winners to keep in their case for the year!!!

I think what Steuben does (correct me if I'm wrong) is you play each team once. That means they play 9 games and 3 tournament games in their league. This means they also play 6 games outside of their league. Would be really difficult in West because we have 9 teams and I'm not sure how you create a tournament where everyone gets 3 games with 9 teams.
I would have loved to have had a JV tournament the four years we were undefeated and match up with teams from other leagues. I will admit I wondered how we would have matched up against other teams.

Take a look at the Steuben County site. I think there are only nine teams in boys JV right now and they still have a tourny.

I know this is under the Boys Basketball thread but, I have to say this.
Congrats to Coach Adam Button and the JT JV Lady Wildcats in winning the 3rd straight Steuben County JV Girls Basketball title tonight. #1 seeded JT defeated #3 seeded Prattsburgh 63-40. JT finished out the season 18-0, perfect season. Key Players: Kim Symonds (soph.), who had put up 21 points for JT in the final game.. Also gotta say, Kendall Austin did a great job for JT 17 points and 10 rebounds.

The finals are Wednesday night 2/16/11, #4 Arkport vs #3 Prattsburg @ 6:00 pm (Canisteo Greenwood school) then #1 Addison vs #2 Jasper - Troupsburg @ 7:30 pm for the championship . You can read the highlights from the semi-finals and find pictures in the corning leader news paper ( 2/12/11) sports section or on line @ www.the-leader.com
, one of the players on the #1 ranked Addison team is up for athlete of the week in that news paper. Ryan Brewster with 32 points and 31 rebounds during their two tournament wins. I pick Addison in a close game next Wednesday and League MVP going to Brewster.

Games are at 6:00 p.m. Prattsburgh vs. Arkport 3rd place
Championship game is at 7:30 #1 Addison vs. #2 J-T
This will be the first time since the 1999-2000 season that somebody other than Campbell-Savona or Prattsburgh has won the Steuben County Tournament Championship. The last team to win it other than those two, was Canaseraga who isn't even in the league anymore. They defeated J-T in the Championship game 66-39 back in February of 2000.

Congrats to Ryan, he was the best all around player in the league this year (in my opinion, no one else close), and is very deserving of the award.
Addison did what most people figured they would do, sweep through what turned out to be a mediocre league and win the county tournament. No surprises there...congratulations to them on their first county tournament title.
Unfortunately, in my opinion they "played down" to their competition much of the year, and it could cost them in sectionals unless they can turn it up a notch. C1 will be one of the most competitive classes to come out of, with the top 11 seeds all having winning records. Addison can't afford to have an "off game" or "sleepwalk" through a quarter or two, and still expect to come out on top in a game like they could get away with in the league this year. I'm rooting for them to do well...best of luck to them and all of the other Steuben teams in the sectionals.

I frankly don't see any of the Steuben teams making it past the quarterfinals this year, but being a fan of SCL basketball, I'm rooting for them.

have to agree, most of them would have likely been eliminated in the 1st round. But all of them are matched up with each other except for Bradford & C-G
