I made it out last night to see the game between the last 2 undefeated teams in division 1 and it wasn't much of a contest, Alexander won 6-2. Alexander controlled the ball well and Pettys/Shilvock were just eating every defender around them alive. Pettys scored 3 goals in the first half on great feeds from different players, Shilvock beat the enter defense for her goal in the 2nd half, the 5th goal came from a series of at least 4 passes from one side of the field to the other where one of Alexander's outside mids buried a shot and then Shilvock set Pettys up with a beautiful feed for the 6th goal.
Bergen had 2 nice goals where they beat a flat defense and just outran the Alexander defense to the goal. Shilvock hit the crossbar and post or she would have had 3 goals. Alexander only had a couple subs on the bench that were playing (some sort of suspension is what I gathered from the chatter in the crowd) and they lost a girl to injury with about 5 minutes left in the 1st half but that didn't seem to slow them down. They attacked for 80 straight minutes.
Bergen was man marking Shilvock throughout the first 2/3 of the game and it didn't do much to help. Alexander seemed to just move her all around the field consistently changing formations and in the end the mark didn't really slow Shilvock down (unless they kicked her legs out from under her which they did several times).
Bergen moved the ball well when they got it but they didn't seem to go forward with it enough. In the first half they were attacking a lot more and had a couple chances that were stopped by the Alexander keeper who came sliding out to knock the ball away. In the 2nd half Bergen seemed content to try to knock the ball forward and outrun the Alexander defense which didn't have much success.
All in all a good performance by Alexander, especially considering the short bench. They are playing the same style of soccer as last year but they looked a lot different that last year. Last year they were not a fast athletic group but this year they are definitely fast, athletic, and they have a few players that are tall and strong. They look young but if they continue to improve throughout the year you may see them in a sectional final in a couple months.
