View Full Version : No Sodus Varsity Basketball Team for 2011-12?

I have heard that Sodus' numbers are down and they may not have enough for a team this year. Must be pretty bad, especially since they are one of the bigger Class C schools (down from B last year).
This may be a scheduling nightmare for all of their opponents, more so for the Wayne County League. How do you pick up 2 games on your schedule 1 month before practice starts and 2 months before the regular season? Maybe they will have a Wayne County Tournament to make up the lost games.
Hopefully they can field a team and avoid the massive headache this will cause.

But I just noticed on the Section V Boys Basketball site that Lyons is looking for 2 games. It was posted there today.

Red Creek may not have a varsity team as well! The Wayne County League is in trouble! That is 7 teams X 4 games each that they need to make up. Plus Sodus and Red Creek have 2 non-league games each. I believe they need to "suck it up" grab as many bodies as possible (JV etc) and get their teams out there. It may not be pretty basketball, but they have a responsibility to the other members of their league and everyone on their schedules. It may even teach the kids something about honoring your commitments and overcoming adversity.

They do not have enough players for 2 teams and those they do have aren't ready for varsity. What a scheduling nightmare for Wayne County. How does this happen to a school their size and with their recent basketball success? Is their wrestling program taking all the athletes? Did they add hockey!?!
No word on Red Creek yet.

Wow so 4 weeks before the first day of practice. Several schools could be 4 games short and basically have no way of rescheduling them.

I heard that Lyons is taking Sodus' spot in the Red Jacket Christmas Tournament and that Wayne County was discussing playing some teams 3X to make up for the lost games. I don't envy the AD's/League Chairman.
However, I don't believe this possibility suddenly appeared 5 weeks before practice starts. If you even suspect that this may happen, you have got to recruit within your school district to make sure you have a coach and team to fill your schedule. The consequences are too severe to let this happen to your league and all your other opponents.

I agree with you on the last paragraph. There is no way you just find this out 5 weeks before practice begins. The coach and AD had to have some idea they were low on numbers in advance and at least let others know.

It sucks for the kids at Sodus especially if they have any seniors or juniors who have put their time in and did the work to be on a Varsity basketball squad.
Think about this though. The teams in Wayne can't replace their two games with Sodus (just for arguments sake). I believe the points they get in 16 games will still be divided by 18. Doesn't seem fair but as I understand the rule, it will happen unless they are given some form of waver by Section V.

Now that Sodus is out of C1, this leaves 11 teams in that classification. Does Bloomfield, as the biggest C2 school, now move up from C2 to C1 in order to even out the C bracket (C1=11, C2=13, C3=12)?

It will be interesting how this all sorts out. For non-Wayne County League teams it would really stink to know that if Sodus plays with a "JV" team as their varsity team that it would pretty much give each Wayne County team two automatic wins and 10 automatic sectional points they may not deserve, thus dropping some better teams down in the sectional seedings giving them possibly much more difficult early round games. Like Finney in football, Sodus needs to be punished for this BS. Send a message to them Section V.

First they are allowed to reschedule those games. There is a cut off date but you may ask the section for approval because of a situation like this.
Second I am 100% sure there are teams sitting on 16 or 17 games right now. They may not be the best fit or may force you to play on a day you don't desire but believe me the option is out there.
Lastly they can always schedule each other

Points are divided by the number of games actually played. So if play 16 games then that is the number yyou divide by. YES there is a minimum number of games required to be divided by and last time I checked that number is 14 games in basketball.

Why would you punish a school for not being able to field a team? I think some of you are being unreasinable in this reaction. This is not a school that has been on the bubble year in and year out. If they don't have enough kids then thats it. I am sure they are working to get players, but by no means should they force the issue. Supply & Demand, in this case no demand.

The AD at Sodus already told people that they would not have a varsity team this year. Therefore, easily earned sectional points isn't a "problem". However, it would have been better to have a sub-par team, and meet your commitments, than not have a team at all. Sodus hosed over a lot of people with this decision/situation. There are a bunch of upset coaches and AD's right now. It also can't look good on your AD resume when you lose a team/season in a high profile sport.

However, this is basketball at a decent size school, not some niche sport with spotty participation. I have never heard of a school not having a basketball team and then not notifying their opponents until the last second. In contrast, I watched Red Creek last year fight through their season with 6 players. They always appeared to play hard and have good attitudes. I am sure it wasn't always fun, but they met their commitments and did the right thing. Hopefully they learned some things about themselves, and tough situations, that will help them in the real world.

The Wayne Co. teams already play each other twice. I'm guessing a second trip to a county rival is not gonna sit well. I'm guessing almost every school has their varsity schedule complete less than 4 weeks before practice starts, so I doubt you'll find games out there.
You are right if you don't have kids you don't have them. My point is you should have known about this in advance. I'm guessing 4 weeks before the season starts you didn't look at your sign up sheet and say "oh no I only have 14 kids (or whatever the number is)". These other schools should have been given a heads up, so they have some way to regain those games.

A third game vs. a team or no game? Easy choice!
I'm not from the FL, but having been in the business for 30+ years most sports do thier "sign-ups" in October. Yes if you are a good program you already know what you have with summer league and open gym. Also I've seem "mandetory" preseason meetings with limited partiipation only to have kids try out at the last minute.
As for schedules just looking at Section V site it list 10+ games needed. Also the new city teams have slots. Check the Section III & VI or MM and a game can be found. Again it may not be the perfect fit, but might be better then nothing!

I heard officially that Sodus and Red Creek will not have a varsity boys team this year. Kind of sad, and pretty pathetic for Wayne County that 2 districts cant even field a team. Says a lot about where the county is at with basketball. Youve got programs like Lyons and ER who are always big time basketball schools and then its like stepping off a cliff to find another quality program. Other teams are on the rise but where is the consistancy? Where is the pride is any of these schools? Basketball is a joke in most of these towns and its pathetic...

Tell us how you really feel haha jk jk. You're right, just a few years ago Sodus had a state championship winning team and now they can't even get kids to join the team. It's a shame and doesn't just speak for the county, it says a lot about a district and its students when these things happen. Its not like they are a D school with 100 kids in the high school, its just really sad where sports are heading in some areas.

I believe the athletic director of Sodus moved on a few years after the state championship team....Don't think it was an easy split either....He was the Varsity coach for Williamson the last few years....Great guy.....That Basketball program is turning around...
Enrolement in Marion Sodus Redcreek Clyde Lyons is getting smaller everyyear....North Rose seems steady but Williamson moved down from B this year...Gananda is pretty much the same every year no more room for growth...Will never become a B school...These schools will merge eventually...Its been a topic around Marion for 30 years but its closer to reality now.....Will-Mar will be the new Cal-Mum some day...Until that happens its going to be hard fielding teams for every sport in these smaller Wayne County towns.....Might get a few more football teams when the merge happens though...That would be ok with me...Love football!!!...

I have seen reports that are examining this very thing. Several school districts are in financial and enrollment trouble and this seems to be their way out. The next 5 years should be very interesting in the Wayne-Finger Lakes region.
Merger Examples:

So i don't know about the validity of this statement, but i heard that a few kids from Williamson's indoor track team were thinking about forming a team to play as the Sodus Spartans this year. Kids such as AJ Stohr, Neil Campbell, Dylan Strommer, Matt Wright and Joey Sewilo have a lot of talent in basketball, and think they can stand up to league competition as Spartans. Personally, I don't know if they can pull it off, but it would be interesting to find out.

...this is part of Cuomo's plan. Bankrupt schools to force them to merge. As it stands now, mergers must be approved by all districts involved through a vote. They are rarely voted yes because the smaller district wants to keep their community identity & their sports teams. In the face of bankruptcy they would have no choice.

I'm not sure Cuomos plan is to bankrupt schools...Sounds like another conspiracy theory to me...but....People are not moving to the state...Taxes are out of control...The big businesses of Rochester are going backwards....No reason to move here right now....So I believe consolidation is going to happen very soon....The smaller communities will have no choice...The tax rates won't be supported when they bring that up for vote...Lets see...Pay $500 more a year in taxes or merge with your neighbor?...I know how I'd vote...
