The Rochester area Players 15 under team would have loved a chance to win the AAU national Basketball Championship. But after winning six tournaments and qualifying for the AAU National Championships during a season where the team went 30-5, the boys had no complaints. The team often played up in the 16 Under bracket and earned a spot in the AAU Nationals by winning the King of the Mountain super regional qualifying tournament, but wasn't able to compete because of the lack of sponsorship. The boys won the Empire Dragons 16U tournament, The I-90 Syracuse Shootout, The Buffalo Storm Tournament, The Binghampton Run And Gun, The Rochester Rumble and the King Of The Mountain. Jake Rayburn (Bloomfield), Trevor Tabron (East) Jamel Johnson (Monroe) Dylan Hodownes (Honeoye Falls Lima) Sandro Basic (Penfield) Nick Granato (Auburn) Raheem Reynolds (Wilson) Michael Mulcahey (Pitt-Sutherland) Trevor Blackwell (Pitt-Sutherland) Zach Saliva (Pitt-Sutherland) Andrew Hoy (Batavia) and Steven Troup (Pitt-Mendon) played on the team.-D&C

PURPOSE

Our camp is open to both boys and girls in grades 5-12. We firmly believe that our camp is the essential catalyst for an effective off-season improvement program. Every player wants to score, but only through proper technique and repetitions will the player achieve consistency as well as their personal scoring goals. We will teach basketball players the proper fundamentals of shooting. These include: upper body alignment, footwork, hand position on the ball, follow-through, proper arc, correct ball rotation, catch & shoot, shooting off a pass while on the move, shooting off a dribble, three-point shooting and foul shooting.

Throughout the camp’s entire week, each camper will shoot approximately 8,000 shots during our drill work; well over 10,000 shots in all. One week of supervised shooting establishes a measure of confidence. What the players do after our camp is critical and up to them.

REMEMBER You cannot play basketball part-time and expect to be great.

You must put the time into your game!

Anybody that would like an application, please send me a private message and I'll get one to you or you can contact Coach Hopkins directly.

Testimonials

SHOOT THE LIGHTS OUT
BASKETBALL ACADEMY

”I just wanted to let you know that many of our kids at UEHS that went through the Shoot Lights Out Clinic feel that they learned more about the art-science-skill of shooting and that will translate into more confident players for us. I thought the clinic was one of the best that I have seen on shooting. It was well-planned in all phases”

Kevin McManus, Head Boys’ Coach, Union-Endicott High School

"Bill Hopkins' Shoot the Lights Out Academy was one of the most valuable camp experiences of my career. Bill's ability to break down the shot, with all of its nuances, is second to none. His detail-oriented style and infectious enthusiasm make this camp an absolute must for any young player who hopes to become a proficient shooter."

Chris Evans, Head Boy's Coach, Owego Free Academy
Assistant Coach - College of Charleston (Div. I /1996-1999)

“I was totally impressed with the quality instruction and shooting details that Coach Hopkins provides at his Shoot the Lights Out Camp. After over 30 years of speaking and working camps, I would rate Coach Hopkins’ camp as one of the very best at teaching the art of shooting”

Bob Schlosser, Head Men’s Coach, Elizabethtown College (Elizabethtown, PA)
2001-02 NCAA Division III National Finalist (29-3), NABC Regional Coach of the Year

“Coach Hopkins has the ability to break down the shooting mechanics into a step by step process that is easy for players to comprehend. His STLOBA clinic was a great way to start our season, this 26th year of coaching at Addison. Many of his techniques and drills are used daily in our practices.

Mike Makowiec, Head Boys’ Coach, Addison HS

"I'm happy to recommend Coach Hopkins shooting video, and if you're lucky enough his personal instructions. He breaks things down to the basics and ensures accuracy through repetition. This is great stuff for any level player. We have found it very helpful with our Girls Basketball program, instilling in them fundamentals of shooting that are reproducible and predictable."

Dr. Sonny Spera, Head Girls’ Coach, Maine Endwell HS

“The Shoot the Lights Out Program is a great opportunity for athletes to become great shooters. Through a variety of techniques and teaching philosophies, Coach Hopkins effectively shows each individual basketball player how to become a better shooter. Coach Hopkins came to our district and ran a clinic on the basic fundamentals of shooting, and also on more advanced skills and drills. The information at the clinic was very helpful, and our athletes became more knowledgeable about shooting. Coach Hopkins stresses repetition and his motivational approach gets the athletes excited about being better shooters. His clinic can only help reinforce and teach athletes how to be the best shooter that they can possibly be. His helpful hints and pointers through individual instruction have made my players better shooters, which in turn has made us a better offensive team. Truly a worthwhile and helpful clinic for all ages!”

Place: Fairport High School
*Note: We may be offering another session depending upon interest and participation levels.

REASONS FOR THIS CAMP:
I have enjoyed helping athletes reach their potential and get to the next level of their ability, which is different for everyone. I have had a lot of interest from basketball players and fellow coaches to show them what I am doing with kids to help them improve. I would love to help each kid out individually, but there is not enough time. At this camp, I am hoping to show a lot of kids what I worked on myself to improve as a player, as well as what I am doing with my high school team and several other local standouts. It will then be up to each player to use the knowledge and all of the drills to reach their potential.
The other reason I wanted to start this camp stemmed from hearing many of my players complain about the camps they were going to and not seeing any improvement. The players felt that the camps had been a waste of their time and money. At this camp, we will not waste time, and I am confident that the kids will leave feeling like they learned a lot.
Last year was a great success. We had standout players from all over Section V, including players who were All League, All Greater Rochester, and All Tournament Team members for the Section V tournament. We are looking forward to another great week. We had great feedback from campers in the past, including the following:

"I really liked the classroom sessions. The breakdown of videos showed the mistakes people make on the basketball floor and the mistakes I could improve on. This part of camp separated it from other camps. It was the best camp I have been to, and without a doubt helped me to have a great senior year.”

On the Strength of their performance at the 2009 AAU National Basketball Championships, Franchise Basketball's 14-and-under boys team guaranteed themselves a spot in next year's national event.
Franchise's 14 U squad traveled to Orlando, Fla., for nationals and, facing 124 of the top teams in the country, came home with a 12th-place finish.
Competing in Division II of the tournament's 14U/eighth grade classification, Franchise went 2-1 in pool play, including an 81-63 win over the Florida Ravens, to finish second in their pool and earn a spot in the Championship bracket. Franchise lost to the Suffolk (Va.) Blazers, 56-49, in the first game of the single-elimination bracket, but rattled off three consecutive wins to make it to the championship of the consolation bracket before losing to Indianapolis EBC 59-52.

All games were played August 1st-8th at Walt Disney World's Wide World of Sports Complex in Lake Buena Vista, Fla.

John Bernhardt is the Varsity boys Basketball Coach at Andes Central School in Section IV, he brings teams to my 3-on-3 tournament in August and also took his players to several Camps & Clinics in the Rochester Area.

Time Out

August 12, 2009
by John Bernhardt

University of Rochester men’s basketball coach Mike Neer feels success is all about developing good habits. Talking to 60 or more young basketball enthusiasts, including Andes guards Eric Reid and Sage Beemer, Neer opened and closed his Big Man/Point Guard Clinic talking about habits. According to the U of R mentor, successful play on the hardwoods is all about the development of good habits. “Invest in good habits. It’s not about the sneakers, not the shorts, not the dunks, not the threes, it’s the good habits you develop that make the difference,” implored Neer at the start of the clinic.

Neer and his staff spent two days explaining and demonstrating the finer points of the game, putting the young hoopsters through a series of drills they can use as part of a practice plan to help improve their game. Over and over, the coaches emphasized the development of good practice and playing habits and the need to reinforce them through serious practice.

In his opening address, Neer said the beauty of the game of basketball was its equality and universal access to participants. According to Neer you can give any kid a ball and a practice plan addressing fundamental skills and if they work on that plan their game will improve. “That’s the beauty of the game,” noted Neer. Yet, the U of R coach added, “The ugly side is that a lot of kids spend a lot of time alone working on bad habits.”

“Give yourself a chance to make a good habit,” Neer added. It’s just as easy to create good habits as it is to create bad ones. At the University of Rochester, we invest in good habits and the good habits guide everything we do.”

For six hours each day, Neer and his coaching staff passionately shared those habits. The young players were schooled and drilled in many facets of the game involving their position of choice. The instruction was positive and personal, with coaches often working one-on-one with individual players. There were no games, just instruction and application of the introduced skills. Instruction moved from individual skills acquisition, to skills you can practice with a partner, to two and three man play sets, and finally, full-team play.

By the end of two days, every one was spent, bodies worn and heads spinning. Neer started his final address asking the young people how many of them had spent their own money paying the registration fee so they could attend the clinic. Not a single hand was raised. Neer charged his young pupils with doing two things.

First, he asked the guys to go back and thank the people who had sent them, the moms and dads or possibly the booster clubs or civic groups that provided the funds so they could participate and learn. Then he asked his charges to thank those people again by taking to the courts every day after their return. Neer reminded his students it was still about the habits. To turn the knowledge to gold required concerted practice of the right skills, the skills they had learned at the camp.

“If you were born into a family that taught you to say ‘please’ and ‘thank you,’ that’s a pretty good habit. That habit should serve you well for the rest of your life. It’s no different here. Learn the right things to do and then put them to work.” Neer encouraged the players to have their coaches contact his office and bring the team to a practice or to come and see a game. He welcomed e-mails to keep him informed on the progress they make. Then the coach, who has guided his team to 11 NCAA appearances, four trips to the final four, two times as national runners-up, and one time as national champions, sent his pupils on their way.

Note: Area coaches looking for a unique and reasonably priced (no cost except room – it’s a day clinic) basketball learning experience should consider attending Neer’s clinic next year. Parents interested in helping their sons improve their basketball game would be hard pressed to find a summer camp or program that packs the punch of Neer’s clinic at only $170.

Upstate Elite will be holding tryouts for 12U to 16U starting Sunday February 21st. If you'd like to tryout for one of the teams get more info here (http://upstateelite.com/elite/).

Upstate Elite has some great coaches to work with their players and they're joined this year by Fairport Grad Cory McAdam at the 13U/14U level. That age group is really where kids start to get noticed by coaches and get a jump start on their peers heading into HS.

I am looking to coach an AAU 17U team this late spring and summer. The team will not be able to participate in any tournaments until the beginning of may. We are registering through the RAP AAU program in Rochester. Can anyone give me dates and locations of tournaments for 17U in the western NY area. They can be RAP affiliated but honestly any dates for any AAU tournaments would be very helpful.
