I would love to hear (or read in this case) where players, past and present, love to play as far as gyms in Steuben County. Factor in atmosphere, lighting, floor conditions, shooter's background etc.... It's too bad the players of today didn't get to experience the old Cohocton and Greenwood gyms, they were classic!

Thanks!

I loved playing in Prattsburgh. The fans were right on the sideline and the gym was usually full. It was just a great experience to play in. Campbell-Savona's gym was fun, especially during the county tournament, too because it is so big and open.

I agree. Nothing beats being announced. Always packed and great atmosphere.

Great examples! Being a Prattsburgh graduate, I loved the old Cohocton gym (we always won) and hated the old Greenwood gym (we always lost). Greenwood had the funky rubber floor that was great for the first five minutes of the game and then a skating rink after that. Jasper's was so small that when they played that 1-3-1 zone, it seemed like John Wallace could reach his arms from sideline to sideline. All of these gyms as well as Canaseraga had the dotted line inside the sideline where you had to stand to inbound a ball. And get this kids...no three point line!

I had the pleasure of playing in the Cohocton gym during it's last couple of years @ the modified level and I also got to play in Greenwoods gym during my J.V playing days and they were both great. This is going to sound crazy but I actually liked playing and the last few years coaching @ Bradford. It's old school like Greenwood, Cohocton & Prattsburgh in that it's small, old wood floor The Fans are right there and in Bradford you know the Fans are there. The Atmosphere is a little Creepy but for some reason I always liked playing there, it's odd but true.................

I forgot about Bradford and that dull, yellowish lighting. It was hard to see, let alone play. BND's place is the only place now that is close to what used to be the norm. Any other schools that haven't yet "upgraded" their facilities?

I haven't been in Hammondsport's gym in decades, but they used to have those tiny, little, wooden boards that heaved whenever any water got on them. No guarantee which way the ball would bounce!

Wow,
I almost forgot about playing there. I think I could have seen better if the gym was lit with candles.

Avoca with the old rubber court was always interesting.

I think it was Canisteo where the fans were on the stage. Very small gym, as was Greenwood and A-A.

Wow, I forgot about the old Canaseraga gym! I will never forget the night back iduring the 90-91 season when Brian Putnam hit a half court shot at the buzzer in a packed Greenwood gymnasium. That was amazing. Of course, we can't forget about the benches on top of the stages in Cohocton etc. Campbell-Savona's gym must be fun to play in as far as players but in my opinion lacks any type of atmosphere because it is too big (obviously taking last year's Prattsburgh-CS game out of the equation). Hammondsport has made some nice lighting improvements to their gym and Prattsburgh, well is Prattsburgh....

CS has some fair weather fans in the stands but till this year that gym was pretty loud for home games for atleast the last four years with their cheering section. Could get pretty loud and especially with close games (Prattsburgh)

Speaking of buzzer beaters, there have been some amazing ones in the county recently. Most recent being Zach Simpson's tip in at the buzzer. And who could forget "THE SHOT" full-court heave in the county tournament J-T vs. A-A? Any others come to mind?

Being a Jasper grad, I am biased toward the old Jasper gym. It had a good playing floor (even if it was small) and it was a good atmosphere to play in. The people and students of Jasper were nuts about basketball during the time I played there (1977-1980). The main shortcoming of that gym was the totally insufficient seating capacity. I remember especially when playing Greenwood or Troupsburg (our biggest rivals at the time) people would start lining up for that night's game as school was dismissing, just to make sure they could get a seat, even though the gym wasn't going to open for another two or three hours...

I also liked playing in Greenwood's tiny old gym...not that crazy about the rubber floor but I loved the atmosphere there. Greenwood's fans were really basketball crazy at the time. They may have done this for every home game, but I know when Jasper played there I remember they used to set up a video camera on the stage and show the games on closed circuit TV in their cafeteria for those not fortunate enough to make it to the school in time to get a seat in the bleachers...I think they had even less seating there than at Jasper...

I agree with ref301 and DSport, the first thing that came to mind regarding Bradford's gym was the dull lighting...

Those little gyms at Cohocton, Canaseraga, and Troupsburg were also fun to play in, with the "in the lane violations" on inbounds passes, gym walls a couple of feet beyond the end lines, "dead spots" in the floor, "10 second" or "over and back" lines near or at each foul line, players sitting on the front of the stage during games, and spectators being so close to the action. My daughter attends the Troupsburg elementary school now. I was in the old gym (now a cafeteria / auditorium for the J-T elementary kids) at an open house being held at the school a few months ago and found it hard to imagine that we ever played ball in such a small packed gym all those years ago...

Avoca's little gym was an incredible atmosphere. Our Bath team was the last team to beat them in 87-88 in the little gym. It was so loud that night you had to scream at the guy next to you on the bench (yes I rode the bench, thank you) and it was still hard to hear. I remember one of our gaurds hitting a 3 from the wing and the ref whistling him out of bounds...YOU COULDN'T FIT AN ADULT FOOT BETWEEN THE 3 LINE AND SIDELINE!!! My wife now teaches there and everytime I walk in that old gym I get chills just thinking about that night.

Great, I look forward to maybe seeing it this winter. Is it the same size as their old gym as far as seating etc?

Pretty much the same yes, seats are all on 1 side of gym, I am right across the hall, I should go check out the seating capacity, but I have a couple students here LOL

I've been playing on it since May every Monday night and it's pretty nice. Size wise it's the same as the old gym, I hate to be picky but there's so much more they could have and should have done. There's still only 6 hoops so practice wise it didn't really help the Hoop coaches much, they put in a movable wall with hopes of having two teams practice at once which isn't going to happen with only 3 hoops on each side.

Also they went with the Hardwood floor which is nice but we've already found out playing on it this summer that the floor becomes very slick after playing for a few minutes so there's going to be a big moisture issue on the floor this winter, you can't make any sharp cuts or you'll be on the floor. Also the genius's didn't put in a ventilation system so when they turn the heating system on this winter and throw in 50-100 fans in the stands there's going to be some problems, I envision the same problem they have in Prattsburgh with mosture dripping from the Ceiling in the middle of a game and managers & Janitors running out on the floor to mop it up. So Yes it is nice but there's also going to be some problems with it, that I can almost guarantee.........

I hope Prattsburgh is able to put in a new floor sooner than later. They have really avoided someone being seriously injured when it gets so slippery

I personally loved to play at Alfred university during sectionals. It was always full, large atmosphere, the fact that you are playing on a court that always has guys playing at the next level on it, that was great. I also liked playing in prattsburgh and j-t. The old greenwood gym was great back in 5th and 6th grade!

I agree. the AU gym was a great atmosphere to play in. They should still have sectional semis there like they used to

I liked the semi's being in Alfred too, but Wayland-Cohocton has done a great job in hosting them the last several years. That is a fun gym and atmosphere too. The county tournament in Bath the last several years has been great too

Haha, had it happened to anybody else, it wouldn't be nearly as funny either.

Does anybody have tape of that game?

Watching that made me remember how good of a game it actually was.

The Truth

Rumors have it there are multiple tapes of the game in circulation. One from the top row of the stands, and one from the floor. Again.. just a rumor floating around.

Of course, just rumors.
