The inexperience and youth of the Bath Rams showed recently in two losses to larger schools this past weekend. On Friday Bath tackled HFL (A) and lost 12-7. At two different points in the game, the team rallied to pull to within two runs. However, the pitching could not maintain the lead and keep them close. Andy Ratchford ( sr. ) and Eric Argenteri (jr. ) surrendered 16 hits to the HFL bats while also hitting 5 batters. Bath inflicted some damage of their own, however, as Justin Brown ( jr. ) had two doubles, Brett Havens ( jr. ) had a home run, Montana Yastremski ( soph. ) had a double, and Mike Rossi ( soph. ) had two hits & 3 RBI's. On Saturday Bath ran into a buzz saw, Dan Telehany, from Corning East ( another A school ) who spun a three hitter against the Rams as they fell 10-1. Montana Yastremski took the mound for his first varsity start and surrendered 10 hits; three being home runs. The only hits collected by the Rams for the day were: a double by Mike Rossi, an RBI single by Brad York and an infield single by Justin Brown.
Tonight will be a huge test for the Rams to see where they stand in class BB as they take on the Hornell Red Raiders at Hornell @ 4:30. Bath lost their starting centerfielder & lead off hitter to a shoulder injury on Saturday and carry only 12 on their varsity roster so the defense could be suspect ? Any time Bath and Hornell compete against each other it is usually an enjoyable contest to watch.

Michael Rossi ( soph. ) pitched a gem tonight against Hornell Monday night throwing a three hitter for Bath. He had a 9 K performance and only walked two hitters. He was supported by his teammates who registered 9 hits. Brett Havens ( jr. ) knocked in the first bath run singling up the middle. Hornell tied the score in the first with an RBI single from Eric Davidson. After the first inning Rossi took control and allowed just one hit the rest of the way. Justin Brown ( jr. ) tripled and Andy Ratchford ( sr. ) launched a long home run to left field in the 2nd. Bath completed the scoring in the top of the 7th scoring one run as Billy Crowe ( soph. ) had a RBI single with the bases loaded. Matt Whedbee ( soph. ) also doubled for Bath.
Bath ( 4-2 ) plays their 5th game in 6 days tomorrow aginst Keshequa. This completes a spilt with four very difficult teams in succession for Bath. Wellsvile, ( W ) HFL ( L ) Corniong East ( L ) and Hornell. ( W )

Bath dropped a 7-5 game tonight to Keshequa. Bath started their 5th different pitcher in 5 consecutive games beginning lst Thursday evening. Wellsville ( Brad York jr. ) HFL ( Ratchford sr. ) Corning East Yastremski ( soph. ) Hornell Rossi ( soph. ) and Keshequa Argenteri ( jr. ) As a result of some untimely errors, Bath dug themselves into a 6-0 hole and could not claw their way back in to make it really competitive. Justin Brown and Michael Rossi had two hits apiece.
Bath now plays Wayland-Cohocton tomorrow and Addison On Thursday. They finally get a break after Thursday and are off again until next Monday. Such is baseball in the northeast. You better be prepared to play consecutive games and have a deep pitching staff. The kids seemed a little weary and now imagine how it feels to play a 162 game schedule. Haha

Bath had difficulty executing bunting opportunities that ultimately hurt them. Livonia's right hander also held Bath to 4 hits through 6 1/3 innings. He was relieved by Chip Northrup in the 7th inning. Mike Rossi scattererd 4 hits through 7 innings and allowed 3 runs through 7. Mike struck out 9 and took his first loss of the season. Matt Whedbee continued his strong performance at the plate going 2-3 with a double. Justin Howell lined a double to plate a run for Bath, as well. Justin Brown singled in the top of the 7th off Chip Northrup to knot the score at 3. Livonia played small ball in the 8th leading off with a bunt single. They bunted the runner to 2nd base and with one out, Livonia looped a single to center for the win.
Bath had two outs both times when miscues cost them in the 1st and 2nd inning. A pop up was dropped by the left fielder and an infield error cost them a run on both occassions. This was a good test for Bath and shows that they play with what is considered the premier team in Livingston County I, Class BB.

Bath dropped their second consecutive game in two days by a 4-3 score Saturday to Penn Yan. Tim Eckerson, for Penn Yan, went deep in the first inning to put Penn Yan in front 2-0. Brad York pitched well for Bath scattering 7 hits over 5 innings. He allowed an RBI single in the 4th before being replaced by Montana Yastremski in the 6th. Eric Howell had two hits and Brett Havens launched a long fly ball to left that allowed Bath to tie the score in the top of the 7th. Yastermski took the loss for Bath.
Bath's achilles heel would come back to hurt them again in this game making some miscues on defense that will cost you against the better teams. With the score tied 3-3, Penn Yan had a runner on first base with one out. The hitter promptly smacked a routine ground ball to short stop looking like a sure double play. However, the throw was rocketed to 2nd base too hard for the 2nd baseman to hold on. It flipped off the end of his glove into the outfield. The runner continued around to score the winning run. If Bath is to compete, come sectional time, they must tighten up their defense. Yesterday a routine fly ball was dropped in left field with two outs which would have provided a 3-2 Bath win. Yes they are young, but it is time to step up and make plays to try and defend their sectional title. The pitching has been stellar and will keep them in most games. Bath stands at 7-5 and has Dansville, Campbell, Hornell, C-West and HfL all in a 7 day span.

I was impressed when I saw them in Avoca. Pitching will be Key, and Zach Simpson's back as well. Those are all tough games except maybe West, If someone else can step up and give big innings other than Sam Wood then they'll be able to do well in those games. They already beat Addison once so at least they know what they're getting in the Addison game. The DH with Bath will be interesting and so will the Wellsville game.

05-07-2007, 09:25 PM
First off C-S moved to 8-0 beating a young Bradford team 18-1, this team could be osmething in a couple years.
As for pitching Sam threw a great game even though he said he threw like crap. Simpsons back is near fully healed but sitll isn't in the lineup as the #3 starter. Matt Blencowe has moved into the #2 spot throwing really well for the Panthers. He came in for Simpson against Arkport and held them scoreless I believe after they scored 3 on Simpson. Tomorrows game v. Bath should be a good game with both teams playing well. As for Wellsville that game might be cancelled due to C-S having to make up league games as they have already cancelled their double-header with bath to tmrw to pick up one with J-T and might lose the Wellsville game to play Prattsburgh. Tough break for the Panthers who need the sectional points!

Joe Wallace went 2-for-2 with a double and three RBI to lead Avoca past Addison 9-5 in a key steuben county baseball game. Both teams entered the game with one league loss, but Avoca's opening salvo proved the difference. The Tigers (10-2) scored all their runs in the first three innings, behind a three-run double by Tony Galvan and Fred Klocks two RBI double. On the mound, Wallace shook off three rough innings and held Addison scoreless the rest of the way, including a seventh inning rally. Addison was led by Jamie Martins 2-for-4 hitting performance and Two RBI, while Josh Stewart belted a solo home run. Martin pitched the last four innings with no runs scored against him.

In what I viewed as a very lackluster performance by both teams, Bath handed Campbell-Savona their first loss of the season 6-2. Matt Blencowe absorbed the loss for Campbell and Eric Argenteri recorded the win for Bath. Brad York did a nice job pitching the first three ininngs for Bath giving up only a run in the first inning off a Will Cornett double and a subsequent error by Bath's centerfielder which allowed Will to circle the bases. Bath responded with 6 runs in the contest, however, I would guess that only half were those runs were earned runs. A boot by Campbell's 2nd baseman and a throwing error by the pitcher allowed a couple runs to eventually score for Bath. Each team had about a 1/2 dozen hits or more with Cornett leading Campbell with two hits and Brett Havens three for Bath. Andy Ratchford had a long double to left field in the 2nd inning to tie the score a 1's. Mike Rossi came in to relieve Argenteri with two runners on base in the 6th and closed the 6th & 7th innings with no runs, on no hits.
Each team had multiple errors and, from a fans perspective, there was not a lot of energy by either club. Both teams have a brutal schedule in the next week and a half with numerous games scheduled. Good luck to both teams in their league and sectional runs.

Hey UNC,
Sitting at work (started up again today) and was looking at the baseball seedings. As they stand, C-S could match up with Kearney. Just curious if that could turn into a situation like we ran into with Greece Odyssey in basketball a couple years ago - team with a mediocre record because they play in the city and play all the bigger schools but is very good for their classification. What do you have on Kearney?

They've been up and down buddy they started 5-0 and handed Bolivar-Richburg who was undefeated and #1 in the state at the time in Class C their 1st loss and then lost 6 straight games, but yes they play larger schools during the regular season just like Basketball. I'm not too sure what to expect from them.
I'll tell you this I've been following Sam Wood and he's been very impressive this season, if Zach Simpson and the Blencowe kid can give them solid innings too, they'll be tough to beat in sectionals.

Sectionals sets up well for C-S. With the Mon-Thurs-Mon-Thurs set up Wood could pitch every game and as of right now C-S has the bye first round so he'll have a week off. In relief it will msot likely be Blencowe who has been throwing realyl well.

Cbellfan15 brings up an interesting point. Class C ( CCC, CC, & C ) is the only clasification that has a Monday-Thursday set up. Every other classification AAA-D, has a Tuesday-Friday bracket arrangement. I would be very interested to learn the possible rationale for permiting this to occur in Class C, but no other bracket ?? This does permit a school to throw their ace in all sectional games ( even though four days rest is better than three ) thus providing them with a distinct advantage. Many schools face the dilemma of when and how to throw their best against the schools that they face in sectionals. Anyone has a plausible explanation for this apparent inequity ??

The C's have three classifications, which means two playoff games to determine the Rep for the C Class going into Western Regionals. If we went Tues-Friday, the C-s would have to play a doubleheader on Sat for the playoffs, or play Sat and Sun, with the regional game on Monday.
When the question was raised a couple of years ago, the C schools had choice of Tues - Frid or Mon-Thurs. The choice was Mon-Thurs. Another option was to have a C and CC Class. They opt for the 3 classes.
If you're goal is getting to states, you'd better develop more than one pitcher anyway. Because you won't win without it.
If you get rained out on Tuesday, you play Wednesday, then Friday, so you'll need another pitcher.
Monday - Thursday or Tues - Friday. Same number of days in between.

Addison 11
Hammondsport 3
Barrett Brewster allowed only two hits and Mike Strong belted a Grand slam as Addison rolled past Hammondsport 11-3. Strong's shot was his second grand slam of the year, and was one of his two hits in the game. The blast came in the top of the second inning which saw the Knights score six of their 11. Ryan Fleet also had a pair of hits for Addison. It would be more than enough for Brewster, who had a shutout through the first three innings.

Bath avenged an earlier loss to Penn Yan ( 4-3 ) defeating them at the Bath VA today, 4-0. Mike Rossi ( soph. ) spun the shut out striking out 8 and scattering 5 hits. That moves Mike's record on the hill this season to 5-1. Brett Havens ( jr. ) had a big double to plate two runs and Montana Yastremski ( soph. ) had two hits for the Rams. The Bath Rams have had a long week. Monday they dropped a 6-5 game to HFL. Tuesday they defeated Waterloo and Wednesday beat Wayland-Cohocton. Friday they beat the # 19 team in the state, Livonia, and today knocked off the # 2 seed in BB. A long, but satisfying week. An interesting note is that sophomore catcher Billy Crowe has caught every inning of every game ( 22 so far ) this season. Bath really has no back up on varsity and the young man was challenged to tough it out this season and has been a rock behind the dish. He has excelled throughout the season and has hit .340 for the year.
Bath will play Friday against an opponent to be named tomorrow at the seeding meeting.
