Is that what they teach at BOCES in Onandaga County?

By the way, the reason we see so many Blue Devils mascots is they were a highly respected WW2 brigade called the Blue Devils.

I'd say the Byron-Bergen Bees nickname could be one of the best. Gotta love the alliteration. But what makes this mascot the worst is the fact that a school named the "Bees" has colors of silver and maroon. I've never seen a silver and maroon bee before.

From Years gone by.....

Jefferson Statesmen
West High Occidentals
Irondequoit Indians
Cardinal Mooney Cardinals....original
Madison Wilson Parkers
Wheatland Chili Scotsmen

Bishop Kearney's nickname has nothing to do with being a King. It comes from the fact that they are located on Kings Highway...this is true.

Does anybody know what a Wilson Parker is????

Why did Jefferson change their name to the Jaguars???

What about Wheatland Chili.......when did they become the Wildcats??

I like some of the original nicknames. Too bad political correctness forced some to change. I am surprised the Fighting Irish hasn't been changed yet.

The last time I was at Franklin, they were calling themselves the Q-Dawgs. There is a mural painted on the wall behind the scorers table of a big dog with a huge collar around it's neck....hence the name. I like the Quakers better, after all, the school is named for Ben Franklin.

I graduated from Franklin where I played football and we have unofficially changed our name from the Quakers to the Q-Dawgs. For a couple years I wondered why and finally I found out: the late Trent Jackson changed our nickname to the Q-Dawgs because he was naming us after his frat who's nickname was the Q-Dawgs.

What is "Carl the Dog" problem. E.Rochester may not be the greatest place on earth but the people are nice and the town is safe. As for the nickname "bombers"...What's the problem with it. It is not only unique but it is a traditional nickname of E. Rochester High School. What is the problem Carl? Is your life so boring that you have to insult school nicknames and towns. I think differant nicknames are great. They bring some flavor to the schools, fans and rivalries. Think of how boring sports would be if every team had to be lions, tigers or indians. Thats why teams make names more interesting like roaring lions, bengal tigers and warriors. So Carl, from now on you will be known as "Carl the Boring Dog".

Piano Stanza One

In the beginning stanza of the poem “Piano” by D.H. Lawrence, the speaker offers what seems to be a nostalgic comparison between a contemporary, sleek, black piano, and his mother’s old, little, and brown piano. In reality, however, the speaker expresses their opinions of the piano coupled with a looming sense of disdain. In actuality, the first stanza is an indictment of his mother’s little brown piano as much as it is an endorsement of the black piano.
Whenever the speaker refers to the black piano, there is a prevailing sense of superiority. The author “paints” this image of superiority through the use of words with connotative value. Such words evoke an emotion which is not necessarily the emotion that the word “intends” to create. When describing the piano as “superb, sleek, black”,
The author creates this aforementioned sensation of superiority. Sleek, black- evokes a sense of power, might, and supremacy.
This endorsement of the black piano through connotation is used to contrast it from the intricate deficiencies of the brown piano. The author once again “paints” an image of inferiority through connotation. Faded, when describing the little piano, creates a feeling of it being dated, insignificant, and lacking in prestige. “Hollows” create a feeling of being worn. The word worn itself has further connotative value. It creates a sense of being degraded, downtrodden, and eroded.
To emphasize the overpowering nature of the black piano, the speaker states that the small brown one be hiding behind it.
The stanza would eventually have to be revised, and for good reason. In the first stanza of the original poem, the portion “with the back (referring to the mother’s piano)”, seems to be forced into the poem simply for the sake of rhyming purposes. This interrupts an otherwise well flowing and fluent stanza. The ailment is cured in the revision of stanza one in the second poem.
The second stanza of the original poem also presents its own problems. In stanza two, line two, the syntax or word order hinders clarity. “Quietly” could be referring to either creeping or singing. “In the shadows” creates the feeling that the speaker is ashamed of his mother, and that he is secretive about the whole ordeal. The word crept also has negative connotative value. It creates a feeling of inferiority. Quietly serves the same purpose. It creates a feeling of meekness. When the speaker describes the strings as “shaking”, a feeling of being startled arises. Shadows evokes an emotion that is secretive and hidden. In the second poem, instead of shadows, the author uses dusk, which is a much less intimidating word. In the first version of the poem, the speaker “crept” through time, as if he were ashamed of his past. In the second version, it is corrected and made “taking me back”.
Also, the imagery created in the second stanza of the first poem is that which has bad “vibes” around it. The speaker describes the strings as “booming”. A boom is a deep, prolonged, hollow sound. It is rumbling and roaring. In the second poem this problem is remedied. In the second poem the strings are described as “tingling”. Describing the strings, and the sounds they make as “tingling” helps to dispel any notion that their booming nature makes them imposing or overpowering. “Tingling” makes them seem quite harmless and docile.

I think I know what Carl the Dog's problem is...

Perhaps its the fact that East Rochester came begging to join the Wayne County leagues in the majority of their sports because they no longer enjoyed getting pummeled by Monroe opponents. That in itself isn't bad; nobody likes losing, especially when you call yourself "Home of the Champions." But the fact that ER has shown hardly anything but pomposity to their new opponents really riles up most of Wayne County.

Next...oh yeah, ER's athletic director called a NATIONAL HIGH SCHOOL COACHES HALL OF FAME soccer coach a "senile old bastard." First off, that coach's team beat ER yet again in this year's sectional finals. Also, that coach happened to be raking in sectional titles when ER's AD was still in his Huggies. And don't give me "But nobody played soccer in the 60's and that's why they won," because his teams continued to dominate Section V and New York for the next 40 years, and they still are today. Actually, not today; it was Saturday. Not to mention, what kind of athletic director (one that proubly represents his school by wearing a windbreaker emblazoned with ER's logo) calls any opposing coach a "senile old bastard." Great representation of ER. Perhaps that's his way of welcoming incoming teams? I know that I wouldn't feel welcome. Would you? Are you starting to see where the bad reputation comes from?

If you still need another reason to dislike the Bombers, perhaps we should travel to Livonia. Before the sectional final game, Red Creek's fans were having a little pre-game tailgate party. This consisted of mostly 40 and 50 year old men and women (the parents of players), the players' siblings, Red Creek teachers, and some hardy student fans. So, naturally, when the ER bus drove by and headed towards the field, some of ER's players on the bus felt the need to give the middle finger to the tailgaters. These tailgaters weren't pumped-up, face-painted hooligans screaming obscenities at the bus; it was Grandma Ethel cooking up some burgers and dogs for the kiddies.

So, maybe Carl the Dog has a point...I'm not sure what is wrong with the mascot "Bombers" (beside the ugliest brown-and-orange color scheme in the history of Western Civilization). However, I DO know that there is a serious problem with the sportmanship of the representatives of that mascot. But, I don't blame the middle finger benchwarmers. I mean, they probably should know better, but some example must have been set for them so that now they don't. Hmmmm, who would varsity athletes look up too...their coaches perhaps...yes, but who else...wait, hold on, what about that Athletic Director? Yeah, that one calling one of the best soccer coaches in New York a "senile old bastard." Perhaps, all the players' bad habits would start with that AD, the Bad-Sportsmanship Champion. After all, it's East Rochester, isn't it? Home of the Champions?

If the allegations of the previous poster are true, your AD, a man in administration for ER High School set the tone. When an administrator does something like that, yes, I could see where it would be setting a very bad example. I also believe that more than one player gave the middle finger salute.

I will say this however. The history of East Rochester sports is amazing for a community of that size. There were many great players and people that walked those halls and live in that town. Urzetta, Bonnachi, Puccia etc.

Find me better person than Nick Urzetta on this planet....you can't.

dfisch80
11-06-2007, 12:05 PM
Maybe that is the problem. The whole "WHO CARES!!!" mentality that east rochester's administrators instill in their students. I dont doubt that there are fine people in east rochester but your fans and students at sporting events as a whole set the tone for how people feel about er and their community.

...nevermind, I cant explain myself

Alot of the tension between ER and Red Creek seemed to stem off of ER's old soccer coach Mike Domm. In all the meetings this year between the two clubs there was nothing but goods sportsmanship and good soccer. Unlike the previous three years where there was alot of problems between the two teams. Also to say that alot of the ER players dont show any class could be true. But looking at the captains of their soccer team i would say that is untrue. Bouchard, Danizo and Michele all were good leaders for their team on saturday, unfortunetly for them they lost the game. But instead of moping around after the game i saw bouchard lead his team to the middle of the field to accept their second place papers. Maybe certain people dont set the right example but the players who know whats right show it.

What is a Gorlok?

I came up with a few answers:

What is a Gorlok?

The Gorlok is Webster University's school mascot. It is a mythical creature that was designed by Webster staff and students through a school contest. It is reported to have the paws of a speeding cheetah, horns of a fierce buffalo, and the face of a dependable Saint Bernard. The myth of the Gorlok "embodies the highest standards of speed, agility, and stamina in an atmosphere of fairness and good conduct." (Tom Hart, Director of Athletics)

1. used to describe someone with no common sense, or thinks that he/she is better than they are, especially in sports.
2. a person with an abnormaly large or disfigured head.
3. a person who makes a huge mess while eating, especially while eating spaghetti

Here are some:

The Fisher (Ill.) Jr/Sr High School, Home of the "Bunnies." That's right, their mascot is a Bunny.

NYU Violets. Not too tough.

Oglethorpe University in Georgia has a name that's more odd than wimpy -- the Stormy Petrels (a rather fierce bird, but not widely known).

Allisonville High School Alices and the Frankfort High School Hot Dogs.

In terms of wimpy names, how about this high school in Iowa, The Estherville Lincoln Central Midgets! Also, many years ago, the city of Everly ... their high school mascot was the cattlefeeders!

Ft. Lauderdale High School Flying L's. The mascot design is a capital 'L' with wings and an arrow through it.

When Troy Aikman played high school football in Henryetta, Okla., the team name was the Hens.

You want some wimpy names you should check out gulfsouthconference.org. Names include Cotton Blossoms (U. of Arkansas Monticello), Golden Suns (Arkansas Tech U.), Wonderboys (also, Ark. Tech), Argonauts, Reddies, Muleriders, the list goes on...

North Kingstown High School -- Home of the Skippers!

Check out Hickman High (Columbia MO) home of the "Kewpies."

You're forgetting the strangest of HS Nicknames: The Nimrods.

two schools that were playing were the Corn Jerkers against the Wooden Shoes.

Stuyvesant High School. Their football team is the Peglegs.

Here in the Nashville area, the private Webb School (in Bell Buckle, Tenn., no less) is nicknamed "The Feet." That's right, the Webb Feet.

A wimpy nickname for you guys: The Holy Souls "Wabbits." An elementary and middle school in Little Rock that is a cuter version of rabbits. And I am being serious.

As an Irishman myself I am ashamed to see that little irishman running around and jumping all over the place. They are a poor representation of the Irish and I wish they would change (JUST KIDDING) but not really.

Blue Devils were well known French soldiers, the Chasseurs Alpins, who were noted for courage, and their distinctive blue uniform with flowing cape and jaunty beret captured public.

So the new nickname for Attica would not be a synonym for satan, instead it would be something like the Aqua Recruits. It's something less intimidating than Blue Devils, like bumblebees are to hornets.

Just another example of East Rochester's idea of "class".

Jack Bauer is a better person. He saves the country once a year!

Background on the nickname Bombers.

"The East Rochester High School teams were first referred to as the Bombers by local newspaperman Louis "Cabby" Providence in an article about Dick Baroody's 1949 basketball team. Providence associated the scrappy hometown team with the prizefighting career of Joe Louis, also known as "the Brown Bomber." Prior to 1949 the East Rochester teams were known as the Brown and Whites, and the Piano Towners, named after the Foster-Armstrong Piano Works, which had a factory on Commercial Street."

When McQuaid Jesuit High School opened in the mid-1950s their first Athletic Director was George Monaghan. George was a big fan of Army (West Point) football under Coach Earl "Red" Blaik. So to honor his favorite team he chose West Point's colors of Black & Gold and their nickname "Knights" for McQuaid to use. But stay tuned folks...there's more.

When Monroe Community College opened in 1962 their first A.D. was the aforementioned Mr. Monaghan. So he chose Black & Gold as the colors and the "Tribunes" as the nickname for MCC.

Pretty neat story.

Yeah, a guy with season tickets in the 3rd row behind the Bonnies bench gave me his tickets! Me and my son went. What a great game. At halftime my son and I bet that Hall would hit for 30 and then had a blast shouting even louder. They put on a show at both ends of the court, didn't they?

That is deffinitely the worst IMO. I know that they have suggested changing it before but the people in the community are so attached to it and they have had it for so long they didn't want it changed.

Great Nicknames, but the Canisteo-Greenwood Redskins are the only "Redskins" in Section V. There are Indians and Braves and Warriors but no other Redskins, so it is a unique name.

The two worst are the Naples Big Green and the Lyons Lions. I keep thinking that Naples should change their name to the Spartans because their uniforms remind me of Michigan State... but then again Sodus and Gates-Chili already took that name...

Why would you even call a team the "Big Green?" Could you imagine if the Aquinas Burgundies took on the Bishop Kearney Light Blues?

Edison Tech's name (the Inventors) doesn't strike fear in anyone but at least it goes along with the school.

They were forced by the name of their town to go with Lions as a team nickname. The Lyons-Bears, Tigers, Blue Devils etc. just wouldn't work. However, the Lyons Ligers might be an option and one approved by Napoleon and Pedro.:D

I agree...not to many names flow with Lyons. Although when I am at a game where Lyons is playing there is always someone who makes a comment of the name. But he name is unqiue at least, I dont think there are too many other teams with the nickname of lions. And thats not a bad suggestion...the Lyons Ligers...has a ring to it...lol.
