Not too many people are talking about Newark who happens to be 17-0. They have been running through teams, including Geneva who they just beat.
The top 5 seeds are to be reckoned with, but is this Newark's year to not only win Class A, but head to states? Most people on this board is down on Batavia following their 2nd loss of the year to Wilson. Sutherland is probably the team in this classification that is being overlooked the most. They have played exceptionally well and will play @ Batavia tonight (I will be at this game and have been looking forward to it for some time now).
Is the wild card team this year AQ? They haven't played as well as they have last year... I believe injuries have played a big part in this... Am I correct with that statement?

All 5 of those teams are equal, that's for sure. Although, Newark has beat Geneva twice.

aq is so overrated its not even funny... i play for bishop kearney and the only reason aq beat us last night was because we didnt have chris or pat arnold(both starters averaging over 10 pts each) and roderick gray was throwing up at halftime cause he was sick as well and still dropped 25 pts...and aq can cry about how the first time crilly was hurt and piccone was hurt when we beat u but for us pat was hurt with an ankle and so was blair with his foot. oh yea and in the first game we turned it over 18 times and gave up 22 offensive rebounds and still won the game as bad as we played. im not sayin last night if we would have had chris and pat we would have won for sure but it would have been a much different game

I'd say Newark has played a good schedule...
...They've beat Geneva (12-4) twice, Canandaiguia (16-4) twice, Sutherland once (14-4), Pal-Mac (11-8) once, Franklin (7-11, but in AAA and athletic as hell) once, Mynderse (12-6) once, and swept a Christmas tournament in Section 4.

All 5 of these teams have their strong points and weak points.
Newark - Javon McCrea is a monster in the post. He plays well on both sides of the ball. His teammates find a way to get him the ball. When Javon is not at his best Tyshun Stevens steps it up.
Sutherland - A very good shooting team. They play hard at all times. Speed is a concern of theres that could cost them a game or two.
Geneva - A very speedy team. Have good shooters on the outside in Derrious Thomas, Mike Sapp and Jeremiah Allen. John Archibald is a good player who plays fast pace and gets to the bucket.
Aquinas - Have a great talent in both Matt Jones and Jonathan Jones. They play very good basketball and are very strong with the ball.
Batavia - Have great shooters on this team and a very deep bench. The Hoy brothers will shoot the lights out. And if they dont hit from outside they have bench members who will.

I'm not sure if you've seen Batavia play this year, but they don't have much of a bench in terms of scoring. Their fourth leading scorer is just over 4ppg.
With that said, I don't know if I can vote for a team. All five of those teams can win the championship. What's going to happen before the semis though?
Sutherland-AQ matchup in the 2nd round, Batavia-Marshall, Geneva-HFL as well. Those are going to be great 2nd round games.

Nice write up.
I love Newark as Coach Ceravolo's teams always play hard and are very tough defensively. I was always like teams that are "just playin" when it comes sectional time... things are loose, rhythm is good, focused. Being undefeated puts a lot of pressure on kids and in such a traditionally strong power like Newark, the stakes are even higher. I love their talent, Stephens might be the most underrated player in Section V but too much at stake leads to mistakes. Lose to Aquinas in the Semis.
I am not a big fan of Sutherland. They have outstanding shooters and play hard but their athleticism and ability to stop other teams in this bracket will be their downfall. Good team, low ceiling, very tough draw as they will face and lose to Aquinas in the second round.
Geneva is loaded with athletes and can put the ball in the hole and defend. It just seems something is missing or they're just that second tier of team. But you cannot discredit the importance of kids knowing what it takes to win in Sectionals as their football success could very easily roll over. They easily handle both Wayne and HF-L but lost to Batavia, in a game I can't wait to see.
Aquinas is obviously talented and I won't reopen earlier discussions about their ability to put outstanding teams together. Their success in football could transfer over just like Geneva. DJ Wing, IMO, carried them in the final last year and will be sorely missed. Karma working... they lose to Batavia in the finals.
Batavia is obviously my pick as they're peaking at the right time and have the profile of a sectional champion. Can shoot, handle and defend. Mike Hoy will be the MVP of the tournament but brother Andrew will make key shot after key shot to lift them to a Sectional Title. Could be Andrew first of four All-Tournament teams joining only Calvin Betts, Brian Hoyt and I believe Chris Sullivan.
Of course.... I could be wrong.

From here on out, Class A will have great games across the board. The 2nd round will be just as great as the semis and finals. Here's the breakdown:
Newark-Eastridge: I saw Eastridge against Batavia a few weeks ago and they have potential to be competitive with Newark. However, Newark is better coached and I think that will be evident Friday night.
Sutherland-AQ: This is probably the best game of the 2nd round. If Corletta is on, Sutherland will be in the game late. If AQ wants to have a repeat, they have the toughest road of any team in Class A.
Batavia-Marshall: I think this is Batavia's game to lose, as they've proven to beat similar teams in the past (Eastridge twice, R-H). If they can limit Charles Jones' production and rebound, they will win.
Geneva-Monroe: This is an intriguing matchup, as Monroe is better than what their record indicates (11-10). Geneva has played a tough schedule and is also a well coached team. I wouldn't be surprised if Monroe wins, but I would love to see a Batavia-Geneva game in the semis.

Ya, I think Newark has been tested.
They've beat Canandaigua twice, Geneva twice, Pittsford Sutherland once, Franklin once and even a solid B team in Mynderse.
Now, that's not the same as Batavia beating Rush but those wins, especially the first five are very good wins.
Newark is an excellent team, who has been tested but Sectionals is the ultimate test... one that is going to be even harder with potential games against Aquinas and Batavia. Tough tough road.

Javon McCrea | Newark basketball
Age: 15. Class: Sophomore. Hometown: Newark.
Position: Center. Uniform number: 30.
Height: 6-foot-6.
The scoop: McCrea has fit in well with the Reds (21-0), one of nine unbeaten boys teams remaining in the state. He averages 18 points, 11.6 rebounds and 5 blocked shots going into tonight's Section V Class A quarterfinal against East Irondequoit Eastridge (10-11) at Newark.
McCrea had double-digit points and rebounds during three wins for Newark, including a 22-point game against Canandaigua.
Family: Jareth Thomas (uncle, 20), Shannon Nash (mother).
Bright future: Vermont and St. Bonaventure are among six colleges that have contacted his family.
Academics: B student. "I'm striving to be an A-student. If you're smart, more things will come to you. You'll make better decisions."

Newark won this mismatch 67-40 it wasn't even that close. Javon McCrea quietly dominates every game they play. He is going to be very hard for P-S and Batavia to guard. Newark quietly dominated the entire game, just building on their lead quarter after quarter. The third quarter, they put the game away early and never looked back. Again I was very impressed with the supporting cast around McCrea. Yakim Overstreet had a nice game on both ends and Jace Havrilla could really hurt people in this tournament because he can flat out shoot. I picked Batavia to win Class A but might have to change my pick to Newark because of one reason: Tyshaun Stephens. He is super athletic, can score, defend and hustle. All the games I've seen of Newark, Stephens has provided that spark to start a run and hit a big shot or two. There were no big shots to hit last night but there will be in the very near future. I'm rooting for a Newark/Batavia final to see the McCrea/Anderson and Hoy/Stephens matchups. It could be a phenomenal game!

Sutherland up 51-27. I can't believe it - Not that Sutherland is winning, but that they are winning by over 20.

So who do you have? Batavia or Sutherland?
I saw the 2nd game of the year between this team and I hope it's as good Saturday as it was that game.
