Three Section V teams Ranked #1 that's pretty good if you ask me.

Pinnum

Might as well be a pre-season poll with all of the 0-0 records listed. I am guessing they gave a lot of credit to the teams that have been able to get some games in and faired well.

The season is still to early but it is nice to see Section V will some solid rankings.

#1 Avoca will play #1 Bolivar-Richburg. They have a home-away series where the first game of which was rescheduled. Looks like it will come down to pitching depth as each team will be focusing on the league schedules with such loaded schedules due to the weather.

Also based on the records I would say any team that has 4 or 5 games in at this point is in good shape (based on a 24 games schedule).

Avoca will be very well tested playing B-R 2x and Hornell 2x, they're scheduled to travel to Hornell tonight but I doubt that they'll get the game in tonight.

Not to mention a couple of league games could be very good with Addison, Arkport & Campbell-Savona all having good teams this season. A couple of others could be competitive Alfred-Almond and Canisteo-Greenwood who Avoca already has a victory over.

Avoca has a very good #1 starter in Joe Wallace and a very capable #2 in Adam Crooks they're still looking for a solid #3 and have a few guys battling for that spot.

Polls are very subjective and often reflect which coordinator turns in which records to whom. ( and using what time table )

I am rather surpised that Bath/Haverling did not get ranked between 10-20.
( at least ) We finished the 2006 season ranked 12th in the state and have begun the 2007 baseball season going 2-0. One win coming against an A school. There are teams ranked with 0 wins. Interesting. Must have some prophets peering into their crystal balls. ( haha ) Greece O. is undefeated and Wellsville is 6-1. They are legit Section V representatives !!

The rankings that matter are the ones that come during sectional time.
We shall see !!

The Representatives were asked to submit the top two teams from each class in their section. I have a vote and I'll admit I voted Odyssey #1 and Wellsville #2.

I was a little torn because I am a Bath fan and they were my #3 but with as young as they are I want to wait just a little bit and see what their record is after 5 or 6 games and then if they're still playing well they'll definately get my vote.

I couldn't shy away from Wellsville & Odyssey as they're are powerhouses year in and out and Wellsville is just getting back from a successful trip down south.

I do agree with you though the rankings that matter are the ones that come out in two months.

I strongly agree that Wellsville and Greece O. should be the two B representatives considered given these contraints. My question would be however, is this the policy or procedure that is used for ranking throughout the season ? Is this just to get the polls rolling ? Is this used for other sports, as well. The reason I ask is; what if the scenario exists where Section V Class B has 5 outstanding teams and Section IV Class B only has 1 ( just for argument sake ) This method of ranking seems to penalize quality teams for equity purposes ??!! ( equal reps from each section ) This may also be because I am unfamilar with how the reps are determined. Does one section get more considerations than another because they have more teams or numbers ??

Any clarification would be appreciated. I appreciate your honest feedback and believe it or not I totally agree with your choices. ONLY, however, given the guidelines you were provided. Polls are polls. I just like to see things afforded equitable and fairly; regardless of the teams chosen.

It's just the procedure to get the polls rolling, throughout the year you send your picks to the Poll editor every week by Tuesday. In other sports it's a little different. There are 3 representives for Section V baseball myself and coaches from Cuba-Rushford & McQuaid.

Avoca lost a tough game to Hornell last night 1-0, that won't effect there ranking as #1 because they lost to a B school. Joe Wallace allowed four hits and struckout 7 for Avoca. Kyle Binder threw a one hit shutout with 5 K's for Hornell. Hornell's D.J Schwartz singled home Dan Bassage with the only run of the game.

UNC - As we saw last year, these rankings do not mean alot. The only ranking that really counts is the final one.

Pinnum
05-09-2007, 11:01 AM
I would think that not being at number one the whole season would make it easier to win it all then having the pressure of being at number one. Now they have something to prove. I would not worry about the ranking.

Please note there have been some changes in the Class "D".

Being it is my first year I was unaware of some of the policies that go with the rankings. Avoca will remain the #1 school there 2 losses are to schools from a higher class. Therefore, I felt it is unfair to drop them from there spot. Thank you all for your understanding.

Hey UNC...

I would like a black Mercedes with a sun roof and high def. TV. Can you please make your contacts @ NYS Polls R US and see what you can do to assist !!?? Holy cow... if I'd have known you were that powerful to sway the " big pollsters " I would have lobbied for a top ten for our team !! (haha)

I guess I got lucky, I did throw a fit but I didn't think for a second it'd do any good. I guess it's another case of "doing your part" in the organization and getting paid back for your hard work. I've done quite a bit, I do alot of research and therefore have tons of knowledge to offer and the "powers that be" are aware of that. It's very simliar to how I was able to get tapes on Campbell-Savona's opponent in Glens Falls, the C-S folks were shocked that I was able to get those tapes, well a few years ago I helped someone out and they paid me back! That's how these things work.

They are still very deserving of the #1 slot in Class D even thought they have the 3 loses. They have came to former #1 in Class C Bolivar Richburg, #10 in Class C Campbell Savona and B school Hornell. Can't discredit a team for playing larger schools, espcially ones that are ranked and are very talented

Pinnum
05-10-2007, 07:28 PM
No. You are right. Avoca has lost to larger schools but you are also assuming that the other class D schools ranked at the top are not seeking out good (larger) schools to play. I think that some concideration should be given to the fact that they are losing to non-D schools but dont assume that other schools in D are not playing the same type of schedules. They were state champions last season, its a whole new ball game.

Do they deserve to have jumped that high? Thats 7 spots in one week with the #1 team in their classification behind them. Great job by the Panthers and good luck tomorrow

Who did Avoca lose to at the end of the season?
