Run N' Gun Lacrosse Camp (http://www.runngunlacrosse.com/rochester2007.cfm)

Rochester, NY...August 7-10 (Day Camp)
Total Sports Experience
880 Elmgrove Rd.
Rochester, NY 14624

Camp Details:

Camp cost includes Run N' Gun reversible, Run N' Gun Backpack, and the BEST positional and team strategy instruction...All Positions welcome, Ages 6-18.

Our goal at Run N' Gun Lacrosse is to make each camper a better player when they leave. Unlike most camps, we do not split our campers into teams and play games all day; instead we TEACH important skills for each position and later in the day we incorporate what we have learned into game situations.

Morning: Hands on Instruction by Kyle, Joe, and our additional staff of outstanding lacrosse players and coaches. Players are split up into their positions and will learn both fundamental and experienced skills; Dodges, Shots, Defensive/Goalie techniques. Morning is all about LEARNING.

Afternoon: Campers will put everything they have learned into action...We will also break up the offense and the defense and teach several strategies that Kyle and Joe have found to be very effective. We will put it all together by doing drills and playing in game situations.

Throughout the day we play several challenging games for prizes; as fun as these games are, they still incorporate lacrosse skills

I'll be entering my final semester for my master's degree in physical education come this fall and I'm looking to expand my knowledge and experience in multiple team sports. To compliment a sports education approach to teaching physical education I would like to supplement my current coaching background and learn more about Men's Lacrosse, "the fastest game on two feet" and the fastest growing sport in the states. Although I have never played competitively I do have a slight grasp on stick handling and dodging. However, I my understanding of rules and offensive/defensive strategy are very limited (former h.s basketball/football/track/ and college football player). Are there any camp directors/coaches that would be willing allow me to work camp(s) this summer to gain experience? Buffalo/Rochester??

Please leave me a message or post if you have pertinent information.

Thanks.

Playing is NOT a prerequisite to coaching any sport. It helps but, it is not necessary. So I applaud your decision & desire to help teach lacrosse. My suggestion would be as follows:

1) Contact the numerous lacrosse youth programs throughout Monroe County and there is bound to be an opening for a youth coach. Work with the kids as they need it the most, and it is the most rewarding. You would be no less qualified than some of the parents (bless their hearts) who volunteer and have never played the game. Focus on proper FUNDAMENTALS . I cannot stress enough how crucial it is to teach the basics of the game to youth. Because bad habits die hard.

2) Complete the US Lacrosse coaching education program. Here is the link:

http://www.uslacrosse.org/TopNav2Left/Coaches/BecomeaCoach.aspx

3) Absorb as much of the game as you possibly can. ESPNU, local D3 colleges, High school action, tournaments, etc. All will provide a unique look at the game from different levels. You may even want to officiate the game. see this link:

Good luck, and thanks for steppin up!

Thanks for the info and guidance! I've been in contact with the US lacrosse website and feel it's an outstanding resource for the game, players, and coaches. I bought the US Lacrosse PE Curriculum and wish that other organizations (team sports) could put together such a complete and cohesive educational course based on the National Standards! Nonetheless, there is no substitute for "hands on" experience! Thanks again for your help.

...And your right, the FUNDAMENTALS is an essential component for any sport.... at all levels and must be reviewed regularly.

If anyone else hears of any specific openings, I'm all ears- and eyes
