Gotta ask.... who are the favorites to win Wayne County next year and why? To me there are three tiers of teams....

Tier 1
ER - Return Cowey and Boyer with some solid JV guards coming up. Lose best small school player in Michele and backcourt sidekick Danizio.
Marion - Leeuwen is a very good shooter. Iannello might be the best player in the county next year.
Gananda - Lose three senior starters who were all-tournament selections. JV team was very good though so they could compete.
Clyde - Excellent JV team with Bryant Fischette and will-be Frosh Wirght. Might be a year away but this team will be talented.

Tier 2
Lyons - There are some decent young players in the program and Coach Veeder is excellent. He got 5 wins this year out of team that had no business winning two.
North Rose Wolcott - Return a couple good players in Bowman and Leisering. Could surprise a few teams and will be a tough out every night.
Red Creek - They lose a ton. Kevin Dates is going to be a good player but will he be enough to compete with the top teams?

Tier 3
Williamson - Losing Smith, Barber and Flora is not going to be easy to overcome.
Sodus - A few good sophomores but they probably won't be ready to be a contender next year.

If I had to pick....... I'm going with Marion.

I agree mostly with what you have predicted with the exception of a few things. First off, I will point out that Clyde is losing three huge seniors; Corey Hall, Derrick Brown, and William Roberson. With those three gone there will be a major lack in leadership leading the team to struggle early on. Their eight grader, however, will be a contributing factor to their success.

Second, I would have put Lyons in the third tier with Williamson and Sodus, and moved Clyde into #2. With the team that Lyons had, being almost the scapegoat of the league for any team looking for an almost garunteed win, did pull through at the end for the five wins they earned. They'll be losing their good shooter Stoutin (?) and do have somewhat of a younger team but no doubt they will continue to get better, just not that soon.

Red Creek is losing their 7 seniors, and will no doubt be weighted down by that loss. However, they will not have to rely only on Kevin Dates. Their guards next year will consist of Alex Keeling (sweet stroke from the three and can get to the basket), Nathaniel Gregg (pure point guard who sat out last season due to knee surgery who will pick apart almost any defense), and Shane Stadtmueller (one of the most improved players and will continue to improve over the off-season to be a major contributor). With these three on the floor RC will be able to run the soles out of the others teams' shoes. The big men, namely Dates, Ryan Pudlowski (at 5'9" a junior this year who can dunk and shoot it), and upcoming Donny Stevenson (the beast of RC's jv team) will not be able to play the kind of physical game RC played last season but will get it done however they need to. They also have some alright talent up from the JV team (even though with the record they had, wasn't about the lack of talent but the not knowing how to use it). RC may not have the year they had last year but with the ability of the determined coaching staff will be able to contend with their new style of play.

NRW will be decent next year, with Bowman returning and some talent up from JV, but I have also heard that Bowman may be at RC next year.

Nice response. I'll take your word on Red Creek's situation as you seem to be fairly involved with the program.

You didn't comment too much on the Tier 1. Just wondering who you thought had the best shot out of ER, Marion and Gananda?

Gananda and Marion fight for the top spot.

1.Marion returns, PG Ianello and Forward Lewen who had some big games. Delyser will start as a 10th grader and should do fine. Size may hurt them a bit but they will be a top 3 team

2.Gananda reurtns a trio of nice guards. THey too will lack a true big man with the loss of sterns and welker. I think gananda will play an up tempo pressing game that will hurt many of the teams in WC next year.

3. ER- Boyer returning and should be one of the top big men in the league. A few guards to fill in from the JV with Fornauero and Cowey will round out the final 5. Will be a young team and a far cry from this season, but coach Michele will find a way to get 12-15 wins

4. Clyde- should fall in here with a VERY strong jv team and with some problems weeded out. Coach Carnaveli had a good year but when push came to shove players like fichette, roberson and hall reverted back to their old style of play which did not work. Coach will be able to start fresh with a group including the pg who was in 8th grade this season. WIll be very young and watch out in 2 years.

5. NRW- will return Bowman and Leisring. Bowman should do well.I thought he palyed well when Crane was not playing. He is quick and a good defender. Leisring should be a top big man along with Boyer from ER and Hollebrandt from Williamson. NRW jv struggled so it will be interesting to see who steps up. I think this year was thier year to shine and they missed it.

6. Lyons- Making thier way back to the top, lyons should do well. Returning Tucker in the middle and Britt as a Senior Lyons should win 7-8 games. A very strong crew of Jv players can help coach veeder move up the ladder. Lyons is an interesting program though. Many kids move out and many kids move in so the turnover keeps you guessing. I did hear that Fichette is planning on attending Lyons next season. THe thing is that Coach Vedder has done a great job weeding kids who dont buy into his style out of his program

7. RC- Returning Keeling as a guard and Gregg who sat a lot of the year will be nice for RC. Again the lack of a true big man with experience may hurt them. Another program with a jv team that struggled at times and seemed small. The loss of the 7 seniors including Roden and Pufundi will hurt them. The one thing going for teh program is that for the first time in years they will return the varsity coach for back to back seasons.

8. Williamson- Possibly could go to 6to or 7th but not much higher. After a nice year, loosing one of the top athletes in the county (Flora) and one of the top Shooters (Barber) along with Smith, coach Mitchell has his work cut out for him. Williamson only returns 2 total players to the varsity roster in Burlee and Hollebrandt. Hollebrandt has the potential to be the top big man in the league. He is probally the biggest kid on any roster. A 8-12 Jv team may bring a few kids up to help but expect 5-6 wins from them next season.

9. Sodus- Another team with potential to move up. Not a great team last season and then loose thier top few players. Jamar Walton and Jerod Laflur are both gone as well as Tyler Ginett. Sodus Like Lyons often gets kids who move into the program so this could be a factor. Another JV team that struggled but one bright spot is a freshman they had. NOt sure of his name but he played each jv game tough. Coach Sergent may have to get him up to varsity next season. Also Watch out for the Little Logans who is going to be a freshman next season. Very big kid with a ton of talent.

Just out of curiosity - I know Sean's little brother Jordan Michele played modified this year, so he'll probably be JV next year. Is he good?

I don't know enough about the returning players on other teams to feel comfortable commenting on their future, but I think that ER will have a decent season next year. They are losing a LOT of talent in their large senior class, but they've still got some really strong players in Fornatero, Cowey, Boyer, and upcoming JVs like Peter Dezio and some of the others who were brought up for the post season. It'll be really interesting to see how they can come together after losing their extraordinary guards.

I expect Wayne County to be a lot more evenly matched next year and it should be a battle to the top for lots of teams.

My Predictions for next year

1st - Marion - They have a shooters in Leween and Ianello, both played significgant minutes this year - a great big guy in "little" lefever and a freshman pg who will be back - plus very good coaching

Tie for 2nd - ER and Gananda - both have players returning off very good teams - both have consistant coaching and programs - great JV teams and youth programs they will have players that will mature and be ready for varsity comprtition - it's hard to say who will be better though - I could see them ending with a tie (Sean's little brother can flat out play - I saw him in a modified game this year - good court awareness and a nice shot already)

4th - NRW returns a shooter in Bowman and their JV team had some huge players - always seem to have some athletic kids - look for them to be improved from last year.

5th Tie - Sodus and Lyons - Sodus will rebound after the big losses of the baseball guy and the prep schooler - I look for them to be improved and I will group Lyons in with them - however Lyons is almost impossible to predict because you never know who will be enrolled their next year - they could have a 6-7 guy who shoots it and handles it and a crazy good shooter who climbed out from underneath a rock -

7th - Clyde - They will miss the althleticism of Roberson and Hall's scoring they do have a great 8th grader who played tough last year - but I think he will struggle to find a consistant supporting cast - coach will be making strides in the right direction but don't look for an immediate turn around

last - tie - Williamson and RC - will struggle with the loss of all thier big guns! they have some other players, but both JV's struggled and they need some basketball players!

You didn't comment too much on the Tier 1. Just wondering who you thought had the best shot out of ER, Marion and Gananda?

I'm not really sure about ER since Wayne County seems to be a league dominated by guards, and ER not having pretty much any returning. They will have their big men, however, but I don't know how they will run their back court.

Gananda will have some good JV's come up, but their returning strength is decent. Looking to them to have some fairly good success next year.

That's some in-depth analysis you have there. I'm glad to see that through observation, evaluation and interpretation you were able to calculate such an intelligible response.

ER will be one of the top teams reguardless of them having lost danizio and michele. The guards coming up may not be as good but all they need to do really is get the ball up the floor and into the hands of Boyer and Cowey, and those two alone will dominate games such as Danizio and Michele did this year. so RCcitymiller ER will most likely be good again next year, not to the extent they were this year but if they have ok guards they will finish well above .500 in the league.

Now my standings in the league for next year are

1.) Marion- the combination of Ianello and Leewen along with the younger LeFevre brother will be way to much to guard, good defensive team.

2.)ER- Boyer and Cowey could be big, if they get some help from upcoming guards, they should do fine with a nice record.

3.Wolcott- Brad Bowman and Devin Leisenring are going to have to pick up the slack without Crane and youngs, guevara. but if they come together and Chris Vanfleet can give them 5-10 pts a game they will be a very dangerous team.

4. Gananda- same thing every year. Outstanding coach who knows how to get everything out of his players. come into every season shooting the ball well from 3, without stearns and welker though no inside presence.

5.RC- They will have to make up for a lot of points without roden and pafundi, but with Dates healthy he should be a presence in the paint and the guard play of Keeling and Greg (sat last year of injury) they will also need a strong season from 5'9 senior forward Ryan Pudlowski, but with that they should push out a record above .500

6. Williamson- Losing just about everyone like RC did, the past 3 years RC and Williamson have played very close games taking 1 a piece each year. but losing barber, flora and smith, they have a lot to make up for. Good coach should get them on track like he did this year.

7. Lyons- still a rebuilding year. Losing their key player in stoughton and another senior they are still a very young team. they will have a much better season winning around 10 games. watch for them in 2 years to be league champs-need the extra time to be a good team though.

8. Clyde- Have a couple returning players, an 8th grade left handed kid who will most likely be the leader of this team for the next 4 years. Lost too much in Hall, roberson, and other guards, they are my #8 if the fischette kid does NOT play, much higher in the ranks if he does play.

9. Another down year for sodus, i just dont see the basketball players they use to have anymore. What happened to players like Antonio Parker and Robert McDowell, Lyons and Sodus use to have players like them all the time. But now they'll have another down year losing LeFlore, Walton and ginette.

nowhere did i say that they weren't going to be good, i just said that i didn't know how their guards would be. Boyer and Cowey will be their determining factor no doubt, they will have to step up big each night for their team next year.
