I am not a rules guru, but something happend today in a game I watched that had me stumped.

4th inning, coach replaces his first baseman. She is the #2 pitcher and he wants her to warmup. She was batting 6th.

Later he re-inserts her as the pitcher in the # 9 spot in the lineup.

10 kids were batting, 1 DH, no EPs or Flex players. It was a JV game.

I thought a re-enter could only go back to the batting slot they came from. The umpires questioned it at first. Then allowed it after they realized there was no flex and EP. I was lost.

What am I missing?

I just contacted a longtime coach very knowledgeable of the rules and this is what he said

You cannot change positions in the batting order. Once hitting in that slot, you are locked in there.

With the only exception to that rule being a courtesy runner who may have run for the P or the C (but not both) in whichever spots they are batting in the lineup. She may enter the game as a substitute in any position for the first time.

If the post is correct, then the re-entry rule was not applied correctly.

Keep in mind that the umpire may have told the coach "No, you can't do that." And he/she may have done it any way. This would be an illegal substitution and must be appealed by the "offended" team in order for a rule violation to be enforced.

Great question, though.
