Freshman shortstop Garrett Kesel finished with 3 hits, 2 runs scored and 2 RBI as ninth-seeded Avon upset top-seeded Alexander 5-4 in a Section V Class CC baseball quarterfinal.
Kesel doubled and scored a run in the top of the first inning, then hit a two-run double in the second inning to put Avon (8-11) up 3-0.
He then scored in the fourth on an error to make it 4-0 and Luke Lottes hit an RBI single in the fifth to make it 5-0.
Alexander scored all four of its runs in the bottom of the fifth. The runs came off two hits, as Avon hit two batters, walked one and committed two errors during the inning.
Junior Ashton Jock earned the win, pitching four shutout innings.
Kesel pitched one inning of relief and freshman Cory Upright retired the last five batters to get the save.
"Cory went through the heart of their lineup, facing batters two, three, four, five and six," Avon coach Jim Dolgos said. "He's usually our starter, but he just pitched Monday, so I just brought him in to finish it up. He's got five of our victories this year."
Alexander finished 17-6.

Matt Kruppner's RBI triple snapped a 1-1 tie in the top of the fifth. Kruppner then scored on a passed ball to make it 3-1 and senior Zach Elliott singled home junior Mike Hackett, who doubled, to finish the scoring.
Hackett pitched all seven innings, gave up four hits and struck out 16 to earn his sixth win of the season for visiting Pavilion (10-10).
"It was by far Hackett's best performance of the year today," Pavilion coach Matt Roth said. "He has a tendency to step it up at sectionals and he really shut them down."

i was at this game. great job for pavilion. hackett showed as much heart as anybody i've seen in my 7 years in sports. he was dead by the fifth inning and held on to win that game.

D+C called Hackett a 'junior'......we thought he was a senior? Which is it?
He's good. Rest of the team is mediocre.

If you look through the Birds Eye Player of week award winners on www.sectionv.org he's listed once as a senior but two or three times as a Junior so I guess it's a little bit of a mystery as to what grade he's in

Mike Hackett is a Junior this year.

If Hackett is a junior, then Pavilion will be tough next year - at least in those games he pitches.
Section 3 playoffs are structured so that at some point a team has to have more than one pitcher to succeed. Tuesday - Thursday games are scheduled.
