I just saw this article today and thought it'd be cool to compile a list of Section V players playing pro ball:

Urckfitz (Penfield) signs with Astros Organization (http://www.democratandchronicle.com/apps/pbcs.dll/article?AID=/20080701/SPORTS/807010314/1007/RSS02)

I'm sure everyone is familiar with this guy (http://mlb.mlb.com/team/player.jsp?player_id=400062)

There was a local lefty who played at Ithaca College who just got drafted. Anyone have the name?

What other Section V alumni are in the minors?

Urckfitz should do well in the pros. He has the stuff (nasty cutter/slider), and if you know him and his background, he obviously has the mental side of the game down. He worked his butt off at MCC and deserves everything he gets from here on out.

I think you are referring to Bryan Gardner from Ithaca? Lefty pitcher from fairport.

Interesting that Gardner also signed with the Astros org. Do they have a scout who lives upstate?

Rick Guarno is a 2000 graduate of BK and is in AA in the Rockies organization.

Andy Parrino of Brockport is with San Diego and made the single A all-star game.

Aaron Wiliams of O-A was with Minnesota and Houston not sure if he is still playing and Kevin Miller of Olympia played with the Pirates organization two seasons ago.

Just about every MLB organization has a scout somewhere in western NY. They are known as "bird dogs". They are just normal guys who are either retired from their normal job or have a job that allows them to catch a lot of games. They don't get paid anything unless one of their prospects actually signs. All they really do is make recommendations to the true scouts and if the kid's name keeps popping up, an organization will send out the scouts who have the ability to sign or recommend for the draft. This is why as a kid you should play every game and every play hard. A lot of these bird dogs just show up looking like a normal guy because they don't want you to know they are watching.

It's Mike Maggert from Penn Yan. He also signed Tim Redding from Churchville Chili, who's presently pitching for the Washington Nationals.

I believe he was the same guy who scouted that Czajkowski kid from Bath back in the late 80's when the Astros drafted him.

Urcky got the save last night in his first appearance! They called on him with the bases loaded and 2 out in the ninth and he got 'em. Anybody who knows this kid knows how much he deserves this. He was the key in carrying Braman to the district championship last year in legion ball, beating Dupra and the "old" Ferris-Goodridge 1-0 and 4-1 four days apart in the play-offs. Did a great job with MCC for 2 years as well. He is a throwback with quiet intensity and a great work ethic.
