What a year for Steuben County Baseball. Avoca won states in Class D last season, they were ranked #1 in the state in Class D for the first 5 polls and are currently #10 in Class D, while fellow Scl member Campbell-Savona is currently #2 in the State in Class C.

Coming into Sectionals the Steuben County league had teams as the first 3 seeds in Class DD #1 Avoca, #2 Alfred-Almond #3 Arkport and then #6 Hammondsport. With Campbell-Savona #2 In CCC and Addison #5. With all those great teams in the league Prattsburgh as the #7 seed in Class D was kind of an Afterthought.

After Yesterdays Quarterfinals The Steuben County league has 6 teams still standing heading into the Semi-Finals, we might have had another one but two had to play each other with #6 Hammondsport knocking off #3 Arkport in DD action last night.

So going into next week we could possibly see an all Steuben County DD Final with 3 of the 4 remaining teams all hailing from Steuben County. #2 Alfred-Almond will meet up with #6 Hammondsport. The two teams met twice the last week of the season with Hammondsport taking the 1st game and A-A winning the 2nd to close the season. So the winner of that game secures a spot in the finals, in the other Semi #1 Avoca meets up with #5 Genesee-Valley if Avoca wins that'll make it an all Steuben County Final.

In CCC #5 Addison faces #8 Cuba-Rushford and in the other Semi-Final #2 Campbell-Savona plays #3 Honeoye if both C-S & Addison win then CCC will also be an all steuben County affair.

In Class D upstart #7 Prattsburgh upset powerhouse #2 Northstar 3-1 they'll meet up with #6 Whitesville for a right in the D Final.

All in all we could have 5 Steuben County teams playing in Sectional Finals. Not bad...............

I seem to recall a couple of years ago in baseball and the past couple in basketball, there was a very loud wail from Stueben County that the domination by the private schools was because they were cheating. Is Avoca cheating? Is Prattsburg? How could they ever compete with such an unfair advantage? Just kidding boys, I thought I would jerk your chain a little. Iron sharpeneth iron. Looks like playing all those cheaters is paying off. But seriously, I hope Avoca and all the other Stueben teams do well it is good for the area and I have good friends and good memories at those schools.
The real advantage that any team has public or private is hard working coaches and players with a goal. It also helps to take on all comers no matter how big they are and if they may paste one on you. You may takes some licks but it makes you better. Avoca has shown that. The same is true with Finney basketball. Their coach is a very hardworker and he demands the same from his players.
All small school teams in the Southern tier should take note of how Avoca achieved its success. They have the formula. That is how Finney did it. That is how we did it too. Anyone can do it. Work hard, learn from everybody, and get after it. You don't just take turns getting handed State Championships.

I have to admit you had me for a second! Thanks for the kind words, your right Avoca has done it the right way, they start with Little League and then Modified and so forth, I believe that this group of Varsity kids now were part of Three Straight undefeated Modified teams Avoca had. They love Baseball in that town, there's no questioning that.
