A very young Bath squad moved another step closer toward repeating as BB Section V champs. Bath won the rubber match with Penn Yan this evening at McDonough Park in Geneva, defeating the Mustangs, 8-3.
Bath immediately jumped off to a 3-0 lead in the bottom of the first inning. Senior Eric Howell led off the game with a sharp single to left field. Justin Brown ( jr. ) then smacked a long triple to the gap in centerfield scoring Howell with Bath's first run. Penn Yan pitcher Ryan Powers then hung his next curve ball to sophomore Mike Rossi who promptly planted the pitch over the 365' mark for a HR in left centerfield making the score 3-0. That would prove to be all the runs that the Rams needed as Andy Ratchford picked up his 5th win of the season on the mound for Bath. Andy gave up 10 hits, struck out 7 and walked only one. It was a very gutty performance for Andy who has been working through badly bruised ribs the last two weeks.
Junior Justin Brown knocked in three, key, Bath runs with his long triple and 2 RBI single in the 5th putting Bath up 5-1 at the time. Sophomore Montana Yastremski had a long double in the gap, as well. Sophomore catcher Billy Crowe threw out 3 Penn Yan runners and maintained his 13 game hit streak with another sharp single to left field.
Bath will play the winner of the Livonia and North Rose-Wolcott game being played tonite in Geneva. At the end of the 3rd inning it was a 0-0 tie. Barring a major upset, in all likelihood, Bath will face Livonia for a third time this year. Each team has won one game. Bath dropped a 4-3 game to Livonia in 8 innings and then defeated the Bull Dogs in Bath 10-5. It would appear to be a premier match up between two of the best pitchers in the area, Chip Northrup of Livonia (6-2 ) against Mike Rossi of Bath. ( 6-1 ) The site will be determined later this evening.
