I was at the Bergen tournament for all 4 games on Saturday and saw most of the 1st round games.
Girl's recaps:
Newark beat Leroy in the 1st round 2-1. Leroy scored very early and Newark really controlled the game from there, they had a great header goal on a rebound late in the 1st half and then scored early in the 2nd half. They were controlling the ball late killing off the clock. Leroy had some great buildups but weren't linking up the final ball into the box for most of the game.
Alexander advanced in PKs over Bergen in their game. Alexander went up 2-0 early in the 2nd half and looked to be crusing but two late goals by Bergen tied it up, one on a corner and one on a cross from the endline that somehow went in. Alexander put in 3 PKs out of 4 and Bergen missed the net on one and Alexander's keeper made 2 saves making Bergen 0-3 on the PKs.
Leroy beat Bergen 2-0 in the consolation game and had the majority of the possession and the better of the play. I didn't see the first goal (I was enjoying the concessions) but the 2nd goal was a great pass through to Leroy's forward (#13 I think) and she buried a ball in the top left corner. Bergen had a couple good attacks from 19 and 12 but couldn't put the ball in the net.
Newark earned the title with a 3-2 victory in PKs that went to the 6th shooter after a 1-1 tie in the game. Newark was a much bigger and faster team but Alexander hung with them thanks to a great performance by their keeper and the defense in front of her. Alexander nearly went on top 1-0 with about 10 minutes left and then did go on top 1-0 when a corner kick was put into the net with 2 minutes left. Newark came right back and scored a goal in one of those scrambles in front of the net where there was at least 6 girls kicking at the same ball. In PKs neither team looked strong. Alexander's keeper made 2 saves to give them a chance but they put 4 of their 6 PKs over the bar. Newark got a fortunate bounce on their first made PK as Alexander's keeper made a great diving save but the ball hit the post and then hit her in the shoulder while she was on the ground and went in. Newark buried their other 2 makes and Alexander had 2 great makes as well.
It was a great finals game and the 1st round games were very entertaining as well.
