Here's my ranking of the top 10 best pitchers of section five (Class BB and lower). I know mostly about the smaller schools so I'll let somebody fill in the big school studs, obviously Dupra (G-A), Ahonen (Victor), and Page (Page) would easily make the list below, along with a few other big school pitchers.
1. LHP Chip Northrup (Sr.) - Livonia (Arguably the best lefty in section 5, low 80's, great stuff, took the Bulldogs to the state playoffs.)
2. RHP Jordan Smola (Sr.) - Greece Odyssey (Ace of the Leopards who took them to a class 'B' championship.) Anybody know his post-high school plans??
3. RHP Zach Leitten (Jr.) - Alexander (If there's a better pitcher returning next year in section 5, I would be surprised and would love to watch him pitch, this kid is the real deal, 85+ MPH with electric stuff.)
4. LHP Jake Grazcekowski (Sr.) - Bishop Kearney (Fastball in the low 80's, good slider, well coached) Heard a rumor he's going to FLCC next year, anyone know for sure?
5. RHP Mark Benietti (Sr.) - Leroy (Fastball in the low 80's, good deuce, another kid who's well coached) My sources tell me he's headed to Brockport but not playing baseball.
6. RHP Sam Wood (Sr.) - Campbell Savona (Looks pretty imposing out there standing on a tall mound when he's already 6'6", ace of a very good Panther team).
7. RHP Mike Hackett (Jr.) - Pavilion (This kid took their entire team on his back en route to the Golden Gophers first ever sectional title in baseball, rumor has him clocked at ninety, thats bullcarp, probably around Leitten speed).
8. Joe Wallace (Jr.???) - Avoca (Didn't hear his name as much this year as I thought I would, very good pitcher).
9. LHP Dave Valle (Jr.) - Northstar (Section 5's craftiest pitcher will be back again next year, may only throw in the high 70's but this kid has about every other pitch in the book, his dad, head coach, and former Red Wing John Valle taught his son well, take a look at him next year if you get to, he's fun to watch, very intelligent on the hill).
10. RHP Nate Spencer (Jr.) - Keshequa (Throws around 80, ace of the Keshequa team that made it to the quarterfinals of the state tournament, smart pitcher, well coached, good curve as well).
Honorable Mention - Koby Hahn (Arkport), Jamie Martin (Addison), Barrett Brewster (Addison), Corey Brizzee (Livonia), Mike Rossi (Bath), D.J. Schwartz (Hornell), Chris Parrott (Warsaw), Joe Layland (Keshequa), Jason Kirkum (Oakfield-Alabama), and Marcus Way (Honeoye).
Let the debating begin, make an argument about the ranking, why somebody isn't mentioned, or why somebody is mentioned.
i think bennetti is an awesome athlete and a great kid, but herrold was better than him. kirkum is a great pitcher and is being lowered on many lists because of his suspension. he's a good kid and a great athlete. hackett is awesome, i'd move him up a bit on this list. he might be the best player returning in the livingston conference.
leitten is tough and the best pitcher in the gr. he's going to be the top returning player in the league.

Kosek from Attica is solid too, he just pitched for a porous defensive team. His ERA was probably low.

First of all, does anybody know how mike hackett throws so fast for not being a big guy? He's probably the smallest guy that can pack a nasty punch. And second, Kosek didn't fair too well at all this season. He didn't seem to strike out a lot of guys, but he gave up mostly ground balls. What about Nick Cuvelier from Sodus, does anybody know anything about him?

Sam Wood very deserving to be on this list. He finished the year with a .16 ERA going 8-1 on the season. His ERA gives him the lowest for a season in Section V and 6th in NYS all-time for a season. He is still "undecided" on where is going to pitch next year but whatever ball club lands him is getting a tremendous pitcher!
Note: Wood is 6'2" roughly 180lbs

Nick is now 17 years old, 6'10", and 225 lbs. He only pitched 2 (highly successful) games for Sodus this past season before making the decision to devote himself to his AAU basketball team. During the AAU season, Nick was approached by several D1 schools (including Harvard, Princeton, & Brown)due to his GPA (95-97) and great basketball potential. Cornell has requested a pitching video. He has reclassified as a junior at the Hun Prep School of Princeton, where he will graduate in 2009. He will play both basketball and baseball there.

Sure! We are sad to have him leave home a year earlier than planned, but it is just too good of an opportunity to pass up. Hun athletic teams are constantly scouted by D1 schools as well as Major League scouts. Sodus just could not give Nick the same arena. Also, Nick seemed to be pigeonholed into a "closer" for Sodus, which was somewhat frustrating for him.
Thanks for noticing him!

We heard about Nick's progress over here in Red Creek...sounds like their basketball team is going to be depleted this year...any truth to the rumors about Tim Johnson not playing basketball to concentrate on DI baseball aspirations?
As long as we're here...no love to a single Wayne County pitcher on the top ten lists...not even honorable mention? Any thoughts?

I had the privalege to coach Hackett and Leitten the last 2 summers. Mike is successful because he uses every ounce of energy he has when he pitches. He has a great push off the mound and is very loose jointed that allows great flexibility is his shoulder. His greatest accomplishment was when he learned to pitch while rag-armed during Sectionals. I love this kid. Tremendous competitor.
Zach is just a flat out natural talent that works very hard year round on his mechanics and delivery of his pitches. When he is mechanically sound and uses good pitch selection, he is unhittable. He threw 91-92 for the UB staff a couple of weeks ago. He has been playing in the NYC area the entire Fall. He'll be ready to go after basketball season. I can't wait.

91/92? He topped at 81 in spring when gunned (off day maybe?)...he is a great learner, always working hard, one of the best players I coached (in another sport). When I heard 81 I thought it was a bit down, considering he was in low 70's in 7th grade (or was it 8th? - not sure) while working at one of the instruct schools during that winter; and a scout did ask me about him this year for an eval - and they don't ask about guys in low 80's.
A lot of Mike's speed comes from his body, you won't believe how many pitchers in this area lose at least 4-5 MPH because of poor mechanics. He uses his entire body and doesn't have the "sling-shot" motion where the body finishes and the arm drags behind - or vice versa that is seen a LOT. Worst part is he could gain some speed if he'd get on a good throwing program, if he hasn't already.
There's a non-league game for '08 - Pavilion vs Alexander. :)

The 91/92 came from Zach. I have personally seen him in the high 80's. He was lights out in the spring, developed some soreness before Sectionals and took a good part of the early summer off. He elected not to play football and has continued to work on his mechanics, with great success. He'll get some rest while he plays basketball this winter.
There has been an Alexander/Pavilion pre-season scrimmage the last 3 years. I'll pay good money to see a Leitten/Hackett matchup.

Top Small School Pitchers
1. Northrup - Livonia
2. Smola - Odyssey
3. Leitten - Alexander
4. Grazecowski - Kearney
5. Benietti - Leroy
6. Herold - Leroy
7. Hackett - Pavilion
8. Wood - Campbell
9. Hahn - Arkport
10. Kirkum - Oakfield
I've commented previously on Leitten and Hackett. I've also coached Shayne Herold in summer ball and think he will really blossom his senior year. Better than average fastball (I'm guessing 80-81, though a little flat at times) and the best 12 to 6 curveball I've seen in the past 5 years. If he really learns to spot his fastball and works on a changeup, he has the opportunity to be really good. With the excellent coaching they get in LeRoy I would expect that to happen.
I'd like someone who has more knowledge about Koby Hahn to comment. Again, we have faced him in summer ball 3 times over the past 2 years and have done very well against him. With the press that he has seen, he's got to have better stuff than what he has shown against us. There has to be something that I am missing. Anyone?
Mustangs24

LeRoy should have a good year, haven't seen Herold yet but heard good things...is it his cousins with Pavilion coming up - Tyler and Travis - or no relation? Both pitchers, Tyler a Sophomore Righty - Travis a Junior Lefty. Both have some potential over the next year or two.

Sutherland had a really good freshman last year who threw gas and had an above average curveball. Not sure of his name, but he pitched against us at home in our first meeting and started against us in the sectionals. He shut us DOWN the first time but the second time around we hit him well with one HR in the first inning (hit by Page) and just manufacturing runs the rest of the way.

Just to let everyone know that you WILL hear about Andrew Marasco this year.
he finished 8-1 with a 1.34 ERA
and hes bringing the heat this year:)

That would be Matt Hallowell, who is now of course a sophmore, he will be the number one pitcher for Sutherland this year. Like always Sutherland will be relying on its always good defence and some pretty decent hitters. look for sutherland to come out on top for the 4th year in a row.

not much of a Red Creek baseball fan here...more of a soccer guy...but we had a pretty good pitcher last year, Cramer (pretty sure its a C, not a K)...he went 7-0 in wayne county with a 5 to 1 K/BB ratio and beat every team he faced. First and only loss was in a 4-1 sectional game against eventual champ Pavilion...he straight up was outpitched by Hackett, but he had a good season in the wayne league. Their coach was telling me he pitched 9 innings in a double header against Sodus and only threw about 105 pitches and gave up one earned. I guess his best performance of the year was against ER in their final game. He pitched 8 strong innings and didnt give up an earned run (3 unearned), holding down ER's offense until RC won 4-3. I believe ER pitched that Marasco, but Cramer gutted it out. Hopefully he and Marasco can face each other again this year...maybe I'll go to the game this time.

Marasco pitches 85 mph? He certainly didn't look that fast 6 months ago, not even close. I might give him 75-78 on a good day.
As for Gananda, they were very young and raw last year...be careful what you wish for ER, they might surprise you.
As for Sodus, they had a hard time throwing strikes last year, and just about everyone agrees that its hard to win walking 10 guys a game...if Tim Johnson can throw strikes consistently, he could be dangerous.

Tim Johnson Sodus
Andrew Marasco East Rochester
Bryant Palermo Lyons
Anthony Roden Red Creek
Colin Schawillee East Rochester

Kirk Stoughton Lyons

I see three ER players, as opposed to four from RC. I realize ER won the county, but if you are going to bring up the County First Team, check your facts first.
But I'm still trying to figure out how last year's PoY won, even though he wasn't even the best player on his team...if someone from ER was going to win, it should have been Bascom, not Schawillie. Red Creek did have the "most feared hitter" in Wayne County in Eric Stevens and the #1 pitcher in Jesse Cramer...

"hey uhh crazy pete sorry to ruin your parade but ER won the league last year...so what are you saying coming out on top?"
Sorry to RAIN ON YOUR PARADE, but you're worse than the bartender on Boondock Saints. Remember, people who live glass houses, sink in ships, right?

A team wins the league, and therefore is the best? I beg to differ. Need proof? Ask your soccer players. Meanwhile, "like im not sure, but I think we" won states..."sooooooo ya" (doesn't writing like an adolescent girl rile you up?).
By the way, ER has only won POY the last two years (Hyland deserved it, Schawillie was a joke). Congrats on that, but two isn't three. Just like 3 players on first team isn't a starting lineup.

And all of you ER players are talking up your team way to much. Winning league doesnt mean anything unless you win sectionals, no one remembers being League Champs in the end, you remember sectional titles. ER players, if want your team to be as good as you say it is, why dont you get off of the computer and work on your skills. Talking up yourself is nothing when you dont bring home a real championship, so stop all this trash talking and do something productive.
i am not here to argue and everyone has good points but ER a joke??? i am pretty sure we have 300 kids in our whole high school and compete pretty well in just about every sport...

Why does someone from Red Creek always bring it back to soccer in EVERY thread? This is a baseball thread. Yes, you won states in soccer, but first of all, it's old news, and second of all, what on earth does that have to do with baseball? Cause, "like, I'm not sure", but I'm pretty sure it's two different sports. "Soooo yeah."

i agree...i love everyone on my soccer team from er but i really dont give a **** about soccer....argue about something relavent

Its very relavent...I'm using our soccer team as an example of a premier team not winning their league. How is that not relavent to what ERocPitcher13 said? Its called supporting an argument.
ERHS07--Aren't you just making it worse for your fellow Eroc'er ERocPitcher13 by quoting him in a mocking tone? Just checking...

Then let me use someone else's quote to help you out:
SectionVSportsGuy: "Winning league doesnt mean anything unless you win sectionals"
In other words, the league winner isn't always the best team.
By the way, what does being "rude and mocking" have anything to do with giving an answer..."I just don't see how they are connected"

Sorry Blitz14 but ER's first game is agianst Gananda and Andrew Marasco will be pitching. Sorry but ER is going to win that game.
Nick A was most likely your best player and he's gone. Nai is a good player, but needs work in the field. Sorry but ER's Marasco is going to dominate. :)
What about Sterns

ok you guys beat the third baseman that had never pitched before. good job. i think the jv could of hit off him. and the game were you beat ER...that was our 3rd basemans second start...ever. so try and think that your going to beat Andrew Marasco...your dead wrong
Phil Pizz pitched against us both times. In our win against you whos fault is that for putting that kid in. Anyway whats your starting lineup looking like this year

because this original thread wasnt about just ER it was about best pitchers in NY....and i said ER and everyone jumped on me. lol its funny tho
im no real baseball follower but i deff. saw the red creek vs. east rochester game. and i agree with pittsfordfootball8791 ER baseball is a joke.... and i really expect to see jesse cramer throw some real heat this year against ER again. good luck to both teams, i cant wait to see Red Creek on top again
I totally respect RED CREEK basbeball...honestly great team, great players...but that post was funny...WE BEAT YOUR TEAM AND THEY BEAT US BY ONE...so if we r a joke so are they...You dont know what ur talking about

I'm pretty sure this list is missing a D1 pitcher from Victor named Eric Povero and yet it has more than one kid on it that isn't even playing baseball in college on it. Awful list. Povero lives with a mid to high 80's fastball and a sharp hook. He should be top 3 on the list.

believe it or not ER is going to be decent this year. I talked with the trainer this past summer and their whole team minus their ace and one position player was a freshman, sophmore, or junior. They will be decent and probably will finish bout a 5 seed for section V class A. As to that Hallowell kid, I have seen him pitch plenty of times to know what he has to offer. For his age, he has an above average fastball (80,81mph) over summer with an above average hook and change and can throw all three for strikes. However he may not be the ace of the Sutherland pitching staff. Depending on how he throws, Ryan Fennel could emerge as the ace of the staff. After working with a pitching coach Fennel is living around mid 80's and is in the process of signing his letter of intent to attend Division 1 Canisuis College. So dont jump the gun on saying that Hallowell is the ace. Last but not least, other quality section V pitchers include Eric Povero of Victor, Chase Grissom of Athena, and another kid from Hilton but i can't recall his name. He is a left that lives around mid 80's. So Pittfordfootball better get his facts straight before he tries to talk about it.

You have a lot of bad things to say about other teams. Tell me why ER is so competitive. What have they done in the past ten years? What big name players have gone there? And where are the Sectional Championships? Oh thats right, your school hasn't had one since 1995.
Haha Berask you are one hypocritical kid who has his own facts all mixed up. First of all, don't talk about winning sectional championships if you haven't won any either in the last 3 years. And you stated earlier that you guys knocked Hallowell around pretty good in sectionals, other than a first inning 2 run home run, he pitched fine til the 4th. Hence Sutherland winning that game. Finally, ER will be pretty good this year. As I previously stated, they have 7 or 8 kids all returning this year. So you might wanna get YOUR facts straight before you go trying to prove other kids wrong. And don't try to tell me that I can't talk cause I dont have any sectional championships cause the team I play for has won 3 in a row. So now you know I'm either on Oddessy, Sutherland, or Fairport. So go win a sectional championship, then come talk to me.

As far as I know- Tim Johnson will be attending St.John Fisher in the fall & playing baseball for them.
Nick is currently being scouted by several D1 schools including Harvard, Brown, & Long Island University. He has also been approached by an MLB scout. His baseball team in Princeton won the State championship. One of Nick's teammates- a pitcher- was drafted by the Phillies. & another-a shortstop won a full scholarship to North Carolina.
Everything is up in the air for Nick right now because he is being scouted by D1 schools for basketball, too. It will be interesting to see what, if anything- comes from all this. Fortunately, with his high GPA he is not completely dependent on sports to gain admittance to a good college.
Nick will be attending the Perfect Game showcase in MA in August, & also will be present at Brown"s & Harvard's baseball camps per their request.

i think bennetti is an awesome athlete and a great kid, but herrold was better than him. kirkum is a great pitcher and is being lowered on many lists because of his suspension. he's a good kid and a great athlete. hackett is awesome, i'd move him up a bit on this list. he might be the best player returning in the livingston conference.
leitten is tough and the best pitcher in the gr. he's going to be the top returning player in the league.
Sean McGuire (Honeoye) is a better lefty than Northrup, the B size was weak. Not taking anything away from Chip, I've coached them both. Anyone reading this after the results of this years games knows McGuire shut out Cal-Mum in the championship game, it was his 3rd shutout of the season. gunned in the mid to high 80's. during games.
