Most peoople say that the guards are the reason why cal mum will win this game.......avons guards are better period. Banach had a great summer and may be the best balll handler in the county, garret is the best defender in county and phillips is the best shooter in the county. I am from letchworth and watched avon played many times last year against perry and these three carried their teams most games in a 22-1 season. Thats not even counting last years poy matt mcbride. Cal Mums only chance is if they knock down every 3

He is completely true with this statement. Avon does have the fans and experience on their sides when it comes to pressure in big games. Kesel and Phillips last year against hornell showed that they can handle pressure.

Most people say that the guards are the reason why cal mum will win this game.......avons guards are better period.
Avon. I am not sure who has ever said that calmums guards are better than avons because that is not a smart statement. Banach Kesel and Phillips all are three year varsity players. Banach had a 2 to 1 assist to turnover ratio last year which is one standard used to determine a good point guard. Best ball handler in the county by far and a very good defender. Phillips had 30 something three balls last year and kesel is the best defender in the county easily, and he is dangerous all over the floor offensively. Then we have last years POY McBride...enough said. Along with Housel and Upwright who both can be beasts on the boards and down low. Not to mention Barrett and Passarrel who are both very athletic, can play defense and provide real good minutes off of the bench. O ya and also two solid juniors Campbell and Perry who would play a lotttttt more on a team that wasn't so stacked up. Either way they will get some good minutes with a lot of blowouts. So with all of that yes wilson needs to make every shot...along with all those other guards who are "better" than somebody? i dont know who but not avons guards, they need to shoot 100 percent. and the big men will have to beat up avons frontcourt (wont happen). Calmum might have more size now but without rodgers and lauffer hitting all those threes they did against us does anybody really believe avon won't win? I mean come on we should really look at this seriously people. Worst case scenario avon plays terrible defense and shoots like 30 percent and they still win by a couple buckets.

Where do you see the word guaranteed in my post? Yes I am going to say that unless cal mum plays out of their mind they aren't going to win, but that's not a guarantee, that is a fact. Also isn't the thread asking who will win this game?? So I gave my opinion basically breaking down each team and if anyone would like to comment on my post then do it. Also what I said isn't exaggerations or biased opinions, it is facts. Avon goes ten deep and has the best shooter, ball handler, and defender in the county, so If you would like to argue that then be my guest. Otherwise yes Cal mum needs a terrible game from Avon and they need to play extremely well themselves to win. There is always a possibility of an upset so I never said I 'Guarantee victory', but when you look at the match ups you tell me who you would pick to win.

I think that Avon will win. I actually think that Avon will run the table in Livingston county with 1 or 2 possible upsets. But I think that it's ridiculous that you would completely rule out Cal-Mum. If Avon plays their worst game ever, Cal-Mum will win. Avon's not that much better than Cal-Mum where you can say something like that.

Please Avon is much better than Caledonia. They over match them at the guards, the big men, and the bench. And they have all the experience coming back. Caledonia has Wilson, and then a bunch of new kids who might be talented, but do not have much experience especially in a heated game like that.

no one can promise anyone games...haha i dont think cal-mum will be even close to avon's toughest game, but anything could happen. if there was a spread in high school sports, i think avon would be up about 15, but nothing is garenteed. cal-mum is going to have offensive issues where avon is going to have team work issues. either way avon has about 5 more playmakers waiting on the bench incase someone on the floor slips up. attitude is avon's problem but still i dont see that getting in the way of a win over cal-mum...but like i said anything could happen

Ya I agree with lcaa. There is no reason for cal-mum to think they should be fine. ONE returning starter and Avon is better this year. Plus the reason for the close games last year was lauffer and rogers hitting open threes, otherwise both games are about a nine to ten point win. And I mean open threes like at the end of the game Avon just let them stand and shoot which isn't good defense and I don't expect it too happen again.

So the only reason it was close was because Cal-Mum's best players hit open shots?
ching01

So the only reason it was close was because Cal-Mum's best players hit open shots?
the reason the final was a three or four point game is because at home avon sat back on d and let rogers and lauffer each shoot just about uncontested shots. Avon had a nine point lead with one minute left that game and almost blew it by playing lazy d at the end. At cal-mum lauffer hit one very tough three in someones face but just like the first game rogers got an open look off of miss communication on d by avon. It was either a nine or ten point game with a minute left in that one too and calmum hit three threes to make it close. I am just saying Avon needs to get better at closing out the end of games when they have nine or ten point leads with a minute to go. They outplayed cmum 31 minutes in that game so they need to finish better.

Avon wins...hands down. They have the best guard combo i have ever seen in avon. Banach is quick has great ball skills. Kesel, is the best defender in Livingston County, hands down, and it doesn't hurt him he can score. And Phillips, can play inside and outside, and he is one of the best shooters in the county. POY McBride doesnt hurt the team in being a 4 year starter. Housel all 6'5'' of him will get all the rebounds and will score in bunches. Avons bench wont hurt the either being able to go 8,9,10 deep. I know they fell apart in sectionals last year and everyone will keep bringing that up. But they are back this year and are determined to make up for it.

OK now that I have had the chance to watch both teams played I am going to make official prediction. Avon by 20 plus. They are just too good to handle. Caledonia will have the play the game of their lives just to compete with them. Tonight against York, Banach and Phillips certainly showed that they are the toughest guard duo in the county, maybve section. And it helps they have Kesel on the other wing which is just dirty. Housel this year has proven that he is potentially an all league selection being a tough rebounder and great presence down low and of coarse they have McBride.
Avon is playing lockdown defense and worries about chemistry should be gone. They are playing as a team chearing each other on and are looking absolutely dominant. Also this will be the first home game for them and expect the fans to be rockin. No revenge for the football game caledonia. Avon rolls

two 3 point wins against cal-mum
a 3 point win against letchworth
a game winner against york
and oh yeah how about that county championship game against Hornell where they also won on a game winner.
But your totally right....they have never performed under pressure....

If you htink they are going to lose you might has well not be a reporter bc u suck. Keep in mind that ER the year before they won sectionals lost in the semis, did anybody say they couldnt preform under presure. i dont htink so. Right now i think Avon looks better then ER was last year. Drop Gananda. It was last year. If they lose in sectionals this year, then say they arnt good.

Need i mention that they return all 5 starters and have beaten two class BB schools.
We already know this about them and this is why they will undoubtedly win Livingston County. Their ability to beat LCAA teams is not in question, it's their ability to beat teams from other leagues who play a different style.
They lost one freakin game last year and all you guys do is mention that game. You know wat it was last year.
I'm not trying to get you mad... but it's a game that most thought they should have won and they didn't so for people to bring it up is valid.
If you htink they are going to lose you might has well not be a reporter bc u suck.
If I'm reading this right, you're saying that anyone who thinks they will lose is an idiot? ..... This sounds a lot like what people were saying after they beat Hornell in the LCAA championship.
Keep in mind that ER the year before they won sectionals lost in the semis, did anybody say they couldnt preform under presure. i dont htink so.
ER lost to a Campbell team that no one thought they were going to beat. Avon was supposed to beat Gananda.
Right now i think Avon looks better then ER was last year.
Avon probably does look better right now. Last December and January they probably looked better than a lot of teams. But, IMO that's because they're playing LCAA teams and matchup so well with them. I won't get into the ER/Avon argument again... pretty much because ER's sectional patch makes it a moot point. If Avon wins it this year then we'll have a debate.
If they lose in sectionals this year, then say they arnt good.
I'll never say they're not good. Avon is very talented and one of the balanced small school teams I can remember. Last year's Avon team was driven by their guards and their big guys served in supporting roles. Avon has the prototype of a balanced team... Banach is a heady, quick PG; Philips is that shooter on the wing; Kesel is the lockdown defender; McBride is the bruiser who can get the ball deep and score and Housel is that athletic shotblocker who can contribute on both ends. They seem to be good kids as well, respectful, courteous, clean players. A coach's dream.
But none of the concerns and questions that people have about them will be answered until February when they have to go back to RIT and beat a Gananda/ER/Oakfield/Pembroke/Campbell and go to the Big House.

They arre playing great this year. Last year they lost to Gananda. They are past that now, and show should you. If ur reasoning for all your doubt is because of the Gananda game LAST YEAR, you guys are stupid. Last year means crap now. Forget about last year. Its a new season for avon with experienced playres. And yes its true that ER won it last year so maybe i shouldnt compare the tow yet but u do have to admit if u have seen them play, they are playing some good basketball. And this yera i think the GR and livngston county leagues are the best in Section V class CC. LEtchworth, Avon, OA, are the better teams in the section. There was a lot of discussion about this last year on this board in a couple of threads, I believe - plus I heard first hand from 2 teams about it, too. Don't get me wrong, I know Avon's really talented and they have a great shot at winning Sectionals this year, and I don't want to stir up all kinds of drama - I'm just saying that last year, anyway, perhaps they weren't ALL angels - and it's the same team this year, right? ;)

We're not stupid for using that game to doubt their potential to win Sectionals because it is why they didn't win Sectionals. It's a new season but because of the way and reasons they lost to Gananda it raises very legitimate concerns about their ability to win Sectionals.
The talk all last December and January was about Wayne County being weak.... and anyone who attended the Section V Class CC between two Wayne County teams knows how that turned out.

I hate to do this but I feel like I need to set the record straight if I can-
1. Yes I was on the team last year
2. Yes calls were made to members of other teams from avon players (mostly to kids from ER from what I heard)
3. All of the calls were made by returning players this year, most of them being seniors this year (if not all of them). I am 99.9% sure on this one, I know I was a senior and never made a prank call and I don't think any of my classmates did either.
4. I don't know if the ER kids did anything to start this, or if they did anything to get it to continue by upsetting or calling back my teammates.
Listen these guys are all good kids and great basketball players who I would hope would never do this type of thing again. With that being said I do think this situation could have shown these players cockiness (I don't know if thats the right word), I just don't think a humble group of players would think to do that...and I know I never would.
To anyone on the team- Listen, I know you guys are good kids and I am pulling for you this year, but I am not going to defend your stupid mistakes

I have seen them play and banach and housle have really stepped up their games this year. They have been great. Phillips is playing really well and kesel has been himself, fantastic. McBride is my only concern. Hes not playing like he did last year. The rest of their players are playing good and they have learned a lot abou their team from that loss. I missed the 3rd quarter, did Phillips heat up from outside?
On a side note, Olympic Silver Medal Pole Vaulter Jenn Stuczynski thought this was the biggest game of the night so she stopped in to check it out.

That's really cool. Wished I could've been there. Did they announce it over the speakers?

Phillips, McBride carried Avon tonight. Phillips played real well in the back court for them and Mcbride finally showeed some dominance with 10 or 11 pts. Great game Avon. They are still looking good

Of course they do, it's December.

It was an ok game. I came away with a few concerns. Avon's fouls shooting(not sure of the stats) but airballs on foul shots? I counted quite a few missed lay-ups or under the basket shots. I also do not like the way the big guys put the ball back on the floor after a rebound, I think this could cause problems with pesky defenders. It is early and I believe they will get better as the season goes on.

Yo they lost ONE game last year. Don't act like Avon just folds under pressure...they had a game where their best defender got injured the night before. Also the team they were playing had a 6'6 kid to trouble the big guys. ONE loss. They have beaten two B schools already. Stop hating on LVC. for real.
I don't hate Avon or LVC, don't put words in my mouth. I was just commenting that last year, Avon was also playing very well in December.

By the way lets compare the guard play since apparently cal mum had better gaurds. Phillips, Banach, Kesel=33pts. Nas,Wilson,Voos=9. both Phillips and Kesel had more points them those 3 combined. So you tell me who has better guards

Enough with last year, it is what it was. A successful year that came up short. This is a new year and lets see what they can do. Were all the sectional champions last year repeat champions? Are all of last years champions going to repeat this year? I think I can safely say, NO. Every team rebuilds and re-tools for THIS season. Teams and coaches can learn from years past, that is it. Why dwell on last years team?
