UM's Shenise Johnson among nation's top freshmen so far
'I want to get UM women's basketball on the map,' said UM guard/forward Shenise Johnson, who has been one of the top freshmen in the nation early this season.

Freshman Shenise Johnson leads UM in scoring,
rebounds, assists, steals and free-throw shooting.
'She's so smooth, a real natural,' UM coach Katie Meier
said of freshman Johnson, above.

mkaufman@MiamiHerald.com
They call her ''Moe-Moe,'' short for her middle name, Monet, so perhaps it's no accident Shenise Johnson spends her free time coloring in children's coloring books.

''I don't use crayons,'' Johnson said. ``I use magic markers and colored pencils, dark around the outlines, lighter in the middle. I can go for hours.''

But her favorite place to be creative is within the lines of a basketball court, where, in her first eight games, the University of Miami freshman has proved to be among the top new players in the nation.

Johnson, a 5-11 guard/forward from upstate New York, leads the Hurricanes in scoring (13.4 ppg), rebounding (8.5 a game), assists (4.4 a game), steals (2.6 a game) and free-throw shooting (89.7 percent). She ranks second in blocks (seven) and minutes per game (30).

No other freshman in the Atlantic Coast Conference is putting up better numbers, and of the nation's top 100-ranked incoming recruits, according to Hoop Gurlz, she is the fourth-leading scorer. Read More... (http://www.miamiherald.com/sports/colleges/um/story/803554.html)

We'll track every D3 player from section five if someone finds a sponsor to pay for it.

I thought it would be more about local athletes doing well rather than what level they are playing at. There were a number of people who questioned her choice of a D3 school. Jessica choose a top level education over a D1 or D2 school. Her thought was, where do I go to play basketball after college? I dont think it was bad thinking on her part. Check out her stats for the year.

The University of Miami’s Shenise Johnson was named to the Atlantic Coast Conference All-Freshman Team, as announced today by the conference office.

Yesterday, Johnson became the first freshman to be recognized with a post-season honor since the Hurricane’s women’s basketball team entered the ACC in 2004, with her All-ACC Honorable Mention recognition and now she is the first player at Miami to be named to the conference’s all-freshman team.

The Henrietta, N.Y. native became the first McDonald’s All-American to come to UM since Tamara James in 2002. James was named to the All-Big East Second Team in her freshman season, the last time that a first-year player has earned a conference award.

Johnson is only the seventh player in school history to be named to a conference all-freshman team. The previous six honors went to student-athletes who played for Miami when the university was a member of the Big East.

This season for the Hurricanes, Johnson is the team leader in most statistical categories, including scoring (12.8 ppg), free throw percentage (.825), rebounding (7.1 rpg), assists (4.1 apg), steals (2.7 spg) and blocks (1.0 bpg).

Shenise Johnson might be a freshman, but UM will need her leadership when it begins the ACC tournament against Boston College.

UM's Shenise Johnson is one of the top freshmen in the country.
When freshman Shenise Johnson answered her phone earlier this week, University of Miami coach Katie Meier thought she had some news that might make Johnson feel a little better after the team's tough end to the regular season.

The news? Johnson was an honorable mention All-Atlantic Coast Conference selection and was named to the All-ACC freshman team.

'I told her `Thanks, Coach. But I thought I could have been so much better,' '' Johnson said. ``By my standards, I don't believe I did well at all.''

If Johnson's first season wasn't up to par, then Hurricanes fans are going to be thrilled to see what she can do when she's on her game.

On Wednesday, the Hurricanes (13-16) were preparing for the start of the ACC tournament in Greensboro, N.C. Johnson is on the tail end of one of the best freshman seasons in school history.

Johnson leads UM in scoring (12.8), rebounding (7.1), assists (4.1), steals (2.7) blocked shots (1.0) and free-throw percentage (.825), and either leads or is ranked second among ACC freshmen in those categories.

Still, none of that means much to Johnson, who said she is more concerned about getting UM's program jump-started while improving her game.

''My shot wasn't consistent at all all year,'' said Johnson, who shot 38 percent from the field while starting every game this season for 10th-seeded UM, which will play seventh-seeded Boston College (19-11) at 6 p.m. Thursday.

``I needed to be more physical. I'm not afraid of contact; I'm just not used to it at this level because you are playing against so many good defenders every night. You've got to make six cuts before you get open, be well-conditioned. I'm going to be working on that all summer.''

Meier, who was named the ACC Rookie of the Year in 1986 at Duke, can't come up with enough words to describe how impressed she is with the most prized recruit she has attracted to UM since taking over a team with Tamara James in 2006.

SHOWING POISE

''You're looking at someone who was ACC Rookie of the Year, who understands the pressures it comes with,'' Meier said. ``But I didn't even have the poise she has right now by the time I was a fifth-year senior.

``Shenise is just so incredibly impressive in that area. She has things to work on. But what I love about her is, she seeks greatness. She gets mad at you if you aren't telling her she isn't playing physical enough or teaching her everything she needs to know to get better. That's the type of kid she is. That's why she is so good.''

The Hurricanes were better with Johnson this season, even if its record might not reflect it. On Feb. 22, UM nearly pulled off a huge road victory before falling to ACC cochampion Florida State 59-58. On Feb. 19, UM took Virginia (22-8) to overtime before losing despite 25 points, 10 assists and nine rebounds from Johnson.

Meier said her team was hampered this season by injuries. Point guard Epiphany Woodson missed time because of shin splits and a stress fracture in her left leg. Freshman Riquna Williams missed four games late in the season.

HELP ON THE WAY

But Meier said she sees her program improving and expects UM to defeat some of the nation's best teams in the ACC next season, when more help arrives. UM is set to add 5-11 wing Morgan Stroman, a McDonald's All-American from South Carolina, and Hannah Shaw, a 6-4 center from England, who should help the conference's worst rebounding team.

''We're not where we want to be yet by any means,'' Meier said. ``I'm not pleased. I definitely thought we'd win more of those close games. But I'm no longer at the point where it's feels so far away anymore

Corinne Wellington, a 6-foot-2 inch forward from Wilson symbolically completed a transformation when she signed her letter of intent with Maine.

"I couldn't catch the ball, I wasn't into sports," Wellington said, remembering her start on the Wilson varsity team.

Wellington improved her skills, became a four-year starter and was named one of the area's top 30 players after her senior season. She averaged 21 points, 12.2 rebounds and 5.1 blocked shots.
