With the season right around the corner, I'm starting to think about coverage for this season. I'm interested to hear some feedback from people that get The Daily News and from people that get other papers.
I run a preview of every game in our coverage area on Friday and in the past have run leaders. Last year we didn't because some coaches did not report stats.
I go to a game every Friday night and Saturday afternoon and I always try to get an intern to get more coverage.
Would readers be interested in some different features, like full team stats each week or an injury report?
Does anybody know of anything different papers do that I could use?

More Soccer Coverage :-)
I enjoy reading the football previews - they are neat
thanks chad. alexander gets great coverage because you actually CALL with details, something which many soccer coaches do not do.

I would much rather call you guys with details than the D and C. I would much rather leave a message with some details than sit on hold for 10 minutes with the D and C and then get asked one question and brushed aside.
Have you guys ever thought of allowing email reports of games? I just always thought that it might be easier to check out some emails rather than listen to the voice mails? Maybe even set up a special one for each sport? Just a thought - I have been pitching it to the D and C also.
i would love that because it would make my life a lot easier, but my editor isn't very good with the computer and is anti-email. it's a losing battle.

team stats would be really cool.I think checking out the smaller city newspapers like Hornell and Geneva, who have local teams to see what they do would be better than the bigger ones like D&C and Buffalo.D&C high school coverage is very poor.More than a few years back I remember a small Virginia newspaper that had previews each week also but then picked a team or 2 every week for a larger article and did profiles of coaches and star players.I know space is always an issue but just a suggestion.

i like the idea of doing an extra feature each week. space isn't as big an issue for me because we will not run some national coverage for the high school stuff. the biggest problem i have is time because i basically do all the high school coverage myself.
i think i'm going to attempt to do complete stats and extra features.

i just wanted to let you guys know what a great job you do at covering high school sports.i think that a lot of those who read the daily news sports section would rather see more high school and less pro and college associated press coverage. We can read that anywhere, like the D&C,USA today, internet,or on TV.the only place that covers high school is the local newspaper.
keep up the good work!

FYI, alot of teams post their stats to their maxpreps.com webpage. Coach Joe Gallina takes care of the stats for the CC Saints and he posts stats to maxpreps. Do you want me to ask him to submit them to you as well? What email address should I give him?
Years ago, the D&C used to keep track of individual leaders stats but they stopped doing it. There's definitely a need for it. This is right up your alley!

The football coverage in the Finger Lakes Times is a joke. In the 80's and up to the mid 90's they did a great job. The would do previews for each game and have people pick on all the local games. Then some boys soccer loving person wrote a letter to the editor about football getting too much press and soccer not getting enough and BOOM football was the red headded step child. Now they run a syndicated Nascar thing on fridays all through the season.

i have always avoided picking games. metcalf and moran got into a big thing about that a few years back and i prefer to keep my predictions out of print.
i will admit i probably pick 90-percent correct though.

Good point.I'll have to admit that I don't even glance at any pro sport coverage in the Daily News.By the time I read the paper I have already heard, saw or read if the Yankees won and how Michael Vick says he knew nothing about about dog fighting about 5 times over on TV morning news, sportscenter, and the D&C.I would rather read about the local kids or the guy who got a hole in 1 at the golf course.I also certainly wouldn't complain if you guys replaced the ton of Nascar coverage with some local stuff either(sorry race fans,I am not one)

Well since this is under a football thread it will prolly be pro football....unbelievable.Lets look at some facts, most football programs have what 3-4 weeks of double practices. How many does soccer have? A regular football season is what between 7 and 9 games? A soccer season is closer to 20? High school football is a American tradition I think they deserve all the attention they get and more.
Yeah I know about Metcalf and the Coach getting in a disagrement, didnt know it was over picks. Back when I was in school there was a "guy" called Fearless Fred, that would make the picks. Then later three sports reporters and a fan would make the picks. But each game would have its own little synopsis. It made every game seem a little important.
I am a race fan but during the high school football season I am all for Nascar takin a back seat....those guys are still gonna make there millions it would be nice for some local kids to get some print instead.

How unfair - soccer wanting a little press too. Almost unbelievable.
chad ... it's the usa man, not europe. soccer will always be no. 2 in the fall. you should be happy.

I was just being a pain - I watch a bit of football too. Not too much - don't want to completely fry my brain.
I cheer on our hometown soccer team, the Rochester Rhinos and the Rhinos do share their field, Paetec Park, with high school football during the Fall... but (besides my wife and kids) football is my first love! :)
