WARSAW — Sharing the wealth.
Back in March, the Warsaw wrestling program captured the school’s first-ever state team title as Ian Paddock (119), Paul Paddock (160) and Billy Romasser (215) all won individual state crowns.
Now the Tigers have decided to spread around their knowledge as they hosted the 2007 Warsaw State Champ Wrestling Camp last week.
“The camp was very successful with over 80 kids attending,” said head coach and camp coordinator Rob Hirsch. “We had several outstanding wrestling technicians and the kids really learned a lot of different moves.”
Jason Fraser, a two-time sectional champion from Alfred-Almond, says he learned plenty during the four-day camp.
“I learned as much from this camp as I did from the Ken Chertow camp I went to last year,” said Fraser. “I’ll be back again next year.”
The cost of Chertow’s camp is $500, way less than Warsaw offered at $100.
Camp technicians included Charlie Voorhees, who placed second at states back in ‘95, and taught multiple leg attacks and leg defense; Nate Schneckenburger, another second place finisher in ‘97 who taught ‘The Claw’ series and leg defense; local wrestling guru Dee Google taught his infamous ‘The Ride’ series and both Romasser and Chris Reger (third in states in ‘05) taught a headlock and cross face series as well as a little funk known as the ‘Buck up Series.’
The camp also had a takedown tournament, a pin to win tournament and a dual meet tournament where ‘Team Best’ beat ‘Team Optional Start’ by an
85-51 count.
“I feel the camp went very well and I can’t wait to see all the campers compete this winter, they are putting in the time and I wish them the best,” said coach Hirsch, who also noted that next year Warsaw will also be looking to host a youth camp, a technique camp, and a competition camp.
