I wanted to raise the question to this site over the topic of whether high school athletes should have to participate in P.E. during season. I know that some views suggest that athletes should be exempt from gym class if they are currently in season for a sport..I for one am a fan of this idea. Now you might ask, well what if you play a club sport or travel soccer that isn't involved with the school? Thats one question that will probably be raised and debated. I know Mcquaid seniors are exempt from gym when in season, just wanted to get some opinions on this.

We actually take a different approach at Dundee. If you don't participate in gym you don't play or practice that day. Our theory is you should participate in gym class if you are healthy, and if you are to hurt to participate in gym then you should sit out the game or practice that evening.

Studies have shown that after leaving high school athletes are on average more obese than non-athletes. This suggests that athletes are not meeting healthy physical activity guidelines while still having a high calorie diet. Athletes stay in shape during high school by playing competitive sports. In adulthood, those opportunities are harder to come by and are viewed by those athletes as "not as important."

Lifelong activities such as tennis, yoga, pilates, x-country skiing, dancing etc. are important things to expose kids to in order for them to be healthy throughout their lifetime because they are much more accessible and easier to do at 40 or 50 years old.

Now, I know some Physical Education programs are still focusing on sports and competition in PE... the programs that roll a ball out and say play. These programs do not align with National or State Physical Education standards. For these programs that aren't really what PE should be... athletes aren't missing much if they don't go to class. This is what people know as GYM class.

Instructionally sound, meaningful PE in which students actually learn about their bodies and myriad activities that can improve their health status should not be missed. These effective programs that align with National and State PE Standards have been supported to increase levels of activity as adults. The results... healthier lives, happier lives, ability to do daily living activities, lower rates of injury and disease, lower costs for medical care etc. This is what people know as Physical Education. If your school isn't doing this, call your principal and ask why.

Students are quite busy. I don't see a huge deal if they skip PE during JV/Varsity sport seasons. People actually get hurt in class also. If there is a certain part of the curriculum that needs to be covered and isn't in health class then they could have a half year course for HS graduation.

Our school only allows you to block gym with a sport if you are a senior. All others must take gym. There is no way around that. As for the club sports, in our school you are also allowed to use those to block gym but they must be approved by your gym teacher and you have to complete a certain number of hours per week which is signed off by the club sport coach.

That's interesting... I've never heard that before but it makes perfect sense. Anyone else feel this way?

I don't feel that it would. In our school the latest you would have PE is from about 1:45 to about 2:30. If you are a varsity athlete you don't usually compete until 6:30. With 4 hours in between, I would not feel warmed up.

I know somebody who tore her maniscus in gym class the day of her last softball game as a senior.

I do, i like having Gym before a meet or something because i can make sure everything is working fine and that i don't have any pain anywhere

And at Alexander the policy is if you're a 3-sport athlete than you're not forced to take a gym credit

I think it's better for in season athletes to participate in gym class because for one reason it might help the other kids, they can see how we're in shape and working hard and it can act as a motivating factor for the kids who aren't in sports

totally agree.

and at elba the policy is that if you miss gym, you dont get to practice/ play that day. and if it is really a big game and you dont want to risk getting hurt, just dont try in gym lol. ik that sounds bad but generally the gym teachers are pretty understanding because a large portion of them are former jocks themselves

you guys have raised a lot of interesting points and I actually gave a speech to my english class on this topic for a grade, and a lot of their responses were similar to yours.

The policy at Fairport is also that if you dont participate in gym you cant play/practice that day.

You suggested not trying in gym, but while gym is usually looked at as a pretty easy grade, but if it looks like your just goofing off too much, it may effect your grade. Now maybe not always, but I do know kids who have failed gym class.

Boobie said that gym is fun, and yes I do agree gym is fun. I really do like it. But I think you should be given the choice to either participate in gym that day if your an in season athlete or have an extra study hall in place. For instance, you might have school until 2:13 (when Fairport gets out.) From there you start to prepare for your game that day. You get on the bus at 3:15 and leave shortly after. If your traveling to a Spencerport or Brockport, somewhere far from you, it usually takes an hour. Get off the bus around 4:15 or so, game gets started at 4:45 rather than its original slated 4:15. Game gets over at 6 30 or 6 45, and you get home at sometime past 8. Now you have to eat dinner, shower and by then its past 9. Now your forced to cram in all of your homework and possibly stay up past 10 or 1030.

I'm not taking any one side, I'm just trying to play devils advocate. Now I do like the idea about club sports getting a signed number of hours of participation from their coach. But I am just trying to get people thinking.

If you wanted to sit out of gym, our gym teacher would say "ALLLLLLLLRIIIIIIIIGGGGGGGGGHTTTTT, TAKING A U (unprepared) FOR THE DAY!!!" thend you get a zero for the day. although if you wanted to sit out before a big game it was acceptable

Like you do work in the study hall anyways.

I never had a problem with doing my homework in time on meet nights. You know it's coming up and you prepare accordingly. I took 18 college credits, was in 3 sports, and I never had a study hall through all of high school and I never had a problem with participating in gym on the day of a meet. And that includes indoor track season when I would also be going to about 4 basketball games a week and meets on friday or saturday nights.

I like doing that too haha. we actually ran the mile for gym the day of an xc meet. i ran a like 6:08 or something like that so i wouldn't burn all my energy before the meet and I ran my best time of the year up to that point in the season

I agree. At Notre Dame seniors have the option to get out of gym, but it's so fun.. it's a nice break from class and with all the study halls I have every day, I don't think I could handle another free period. I sit around and do nothing at school so much..

At our school, gym is mandatory no matter if you play sports or not. Seniors have to participate too. However, if you wrestle or play football, you get all the breaks.
