- Dan Enright
Canandaigua, NY--Adorned in cherry red, white and a hint of silver, the Canandaigua girls basketball team continues its quest for gold and has been sizzling the scoreboard in the process.
At 8-1, CA is one of the top teams in Section 5 on the hardwood this season. The Big Red Machine has outscored its challengers 639-320, an average of 71-35 per game. Read More... (http://www.mpnnow.com/sports/x1621233525/-Big-Red-Scoring-Machine-averaging-71-per-outing)

Canandaigua needs to beef up its schedule. The Finger Lakes competition is not good preparation for sectionals against large schools with quality starting fives and bench depth.
This is actually a relatively weak year across the section in Class AA. Having said that, though, I don't think CA can hope for anything more than a spot in the semifinals.

As for the topic, CA schedule is a joke. I have said it a 1000 times, why play teams with 1 or 2 wins & then schedule Class B & C schools? I can't even waste anymore on this toipc.

League Membership. The MCL denied Canandaigua entry.

True, but that doesn't mean Monroe County schools wouldn't be willing to play non-leaguers with Canandaigua.
And let's not forget the slew of quality large schools in nearby Section 3. A bunch of them came over to Pittsford Sutherland one day last month to take on top Section 5 schools.
Canandaigua would gain a lot playing the likes of Mexico, Oswego, Corcoran or Cicero-North Syracuse.

Ok, so they play a weak schedule. What does that mean? They're crushing every team they play. It's not like they are competing against teams and just barely winning. And so what if when they get to sectionals and get run over by school's the same size but have been playing better competition. Is that CA's fault? No. They tried to move to Monroe County and didn't get accepted. They HAVE to play team's in their own league and it's not CA's fault most of them aren't that great. They have played two schools in Class AAA this year and beat both. Granted, Schroeder (1-6) and Edison (2-7) aren't that great, CA didn't know how good team's would be coming into the season. Who knew that Bolivar-Richburg and Rush-Henrietta were going to crap the bed in football. Some, I'm sure. But both football teams had EXCELLENT season's last year.
I really just don't see the validity in trying to discredit a team. I know that I would try to discredit a team's success if I were jealous, and I know that isn't the case with anyone here. When you really just stop and think about it we're talking about 11 girls between the ages of 15-and-17 that go to practice every day, show up on game-day's and do their job. They do it well. Just because they make more and an easier paying job doesn't deserve for them to be diminished because it just so happens their geographical location and school size place them in the Finger Lakes East.
Anyway, I am sure this debate could go on for many, many more replies but the bottom line is that CA is playing schools with weaker records and are crushing them. End of story.

Here is the point I think people are trying to make. I personally don't care who they play or when.
CA schedule is what it is. They do play alot of weaker teams in their non-league schedule. Everybody knows that Edison is bad..........just about every year.
The appearance is that Coach Guy is loading up on teams that he can beat, and beat badly. The appearance is that CA doesn't win with class and dignity. I have heard stories that they win games by 50-60 points and the Zahn girl is still playing. If that is true what is the purpose?
If the goal is to win as many games during the regular season as possible, than CA will accomplish that. If the goal is to win sectionals, they will come up short. Their schedule does not prepare them for sectional time.
Nobody is discounting the effort that the kids put in. The detractors are discounting the record because of the teams that CA has scheduled.

I agree with oldschool. No one is talking about the league schedule, we are talking about the non-league schedule. Don’t cry we wanted to move into Monroe County card, for years the Finger Lakes said it didn’t matter, but then Victor moved. As for the teams they played? YES we all knew Schroeder (1-6), Edison (2-8), Chittenango (2-5), Niagara Falls (2-6) would all be AWFUL! That’s the point, play the teams that are your size and level.
Should be no debate, but we all want the rose colored CA glasses to remember this as well. If they win sectionals then great, but they still used poor judgment.

They play Geneva tomorrow night. I would say Geneva is a credited team. So, we'll see what happens then.

I kind of started this debate without intending to do so.
I just look at the scoring differential and who they've played in non-leaguers and realized they're not going to be prepared to play sectionals against teams with comparable records.
No, there isn't anything they can do about their league schedule. But they need to challenge themselves against quality 'AA' teams instead of beaing up Schroeder, Edison and Niagara Falls.
And I've got to say that anyone who didn't anticipate the three schools mentioned above being bad this year doesn't pay any attention to girls hoops. Two of them are consistently awful, and it was no secret that Schroeder would have almost no experienced talent returning this season.
