This very well could be the beginning of the end of the Empire State Games.
It was announced by The Buffalo News this morning that the Empire State Games might be downsizing, and in fact starting to charge athletes up to $300 each to participate in the summer games.

What a sad development. You hate to see such a proud tradition being diminished.

In bad economic times, you have to cut the luxuries. It appears that's what this is. The state of NY is going broke. We can no longer afford to continue to carry t his event in the budget. It is very sad, but that is what mismanagement will get you. Wait until the next State budget comes out and you look at the new "fees" that will be assessed. They aren't calling them taxes, but in the long run, Joe consumer will pay. Prescriptions will be taxed. Who does that hurt? The sick and the elderly. Nice move.

Are you capable of adding anything positive to a thread or are you always just a clown? "Why don't we just tax the Indians more?" hmmmm, I thought they were tax exempt. What have they been teaching you in school?

If you keep up with current events, it is Patterson's plan to tax the indian's selling cigarettes to american citizens. Thus it was a serious post, because I disagree with taxing Indians. It was also a serious post because as I am a fan of the empire state games, I would like them to stick around, so if our brilliant government decides to tax indians, I would like to see the money go to the games.
So my post was both real information both politically and sportswise so get off my case and read a newspaper.

You said tax the Indians more. They aren't even taxed. How can you tax somebody more when they aren't taxed at all?
IMO, IF the Indians are ever going to be taxed, I am 100% sure that the money wouldn't go to fund the Empire State Games. This state is probably in the worse shape of the other 49. We are going broke.
IMO, the Empire State Games do not have the best athletes competing either. It's a feel good situation for the athletes that do participate, and for them I feel sorry. Cuts are going to have to be made, and sports are going to take the hit. Do you realize how much money is spent (IE: wasted?) to put on a basketball game, at least in Monroe County and the City of Rochester? It's a joke. Start there with the cuts. I know you can't because of rediculous Union contracts. Whomever was the negotiator for those contracts should be fired. It certainly doesn't have the best interest of the taxpayer in mind.

Paterson just signed a bill to tax them.

Again. Keep up with current events before you try to out smart the clown.

Watch the ramifications of that. The Indians will now try to assess a toll on the portion of the thruway that goes through their land. This will be interesting to follow. Another great move by our illustrious politicians.

Quick fun fact: NYS is ranked as the 9th best economy in the US in the year 2007. In 1999 we were 16th, and 2002 we were 11th. So in realtiy we are doing ok and even improving.
However, I still say we need cuts in certain areas. But it is possible to limit programs like the Empire State Games, without eliminating them completely.

I agree. Indians should not be taxed, it really is stupid and idiotic but that is what's happening.
