Tommorrow night Alfred-Almond travels to J-T for a big league game. Both teams are undefeated in league play. The upstart Eagles are 9-1 overall after going 0-20 last season. J-T is 6-2 with losses to Andover & Genesee-Valley. Alfred-Almond has only beaten one team with a better than .500 record the 5-3 Arkport Blue Jays. their other wins are vs. Twin Tiers Christian-IV, Avoca (3-4) Friendship (0-8) Addison (0-7) Belfast twice (2-6) Scio (3-5) & Canaseraga (1-7) so it'll be interesting to see how they do vs. some of the better teams in the league.

Can A-A beat J-T? Can they shut down Brennan Thurber like they have Belfast's Ryan Paulsen? & Scio's Kris Roberts?

Can A-A keep their impressive start to the season going?

What does everybody think?

He coached J.V there two years ago before leaving to Coach the A-A Varsity squad. I agree he's done a great job there regardless of the teams he's beaten he already has something to be proud of winning 9-of-10 to start the season and I'm pretty sure they'll win a few more......

Well, i wouldn't say Thurber has had a season strong enough to say he will "smack A-A". They have played Canaseraga THREE times (need I say more), Andover who is guard oriented, Genesee Valley (i think Young is their big and he had 16 points compared to Thurbers 14), C-G who has McKibben (16 pts) and held Thurber to 10, Arkport who has Kerr (Thurber had 14). I really think with all of the talk surrounding Thurber, he hasn't put up as big a numbers as we all thought. I really think he could be scary to match up against next year when he is a senior.

The game tonight has been postponed because of the weather, I'm not even sure if these schools had school today, so it's been postponed till further notice

I think that its because thurber has no talent around him...there is really no good guards on that team to get him the ball

Despite the numbers, Brennan Thurber has been a key player in the game. Besides he has well over 100 points.

The A-A game will be played on Jan. 26th at Jasper

They beat Arkport tonight 67-55 and Thurber only had about 7 points, they are 7-2 and undefeated in the league so far. They are proving that they don't need big numbers from him to win. He takes a lot of attention from the other 4 on the court and they are good enough to be able to score. but if he weren't double teamed down low he would hurt the other teams with his post play and court awareness. he has just contributed in other ways than the scoreboard

Although the game was closer than the final score indicates... Arkport came out and played a good first half, they controlled the boards for the most part in the half and made a late run to go up by 9 at halftime, 32-23. Chris Smith had a very good night offensively for JT, he helped keep them close until the second half, when JT made a run early. Brendon Caparulo hit a couple of quick 3's to key the run. JT was up by 2 going into the fourth quarter. They finally started working the ball inside to Thurber, who hadn't been much of a factor until then. Arkport did a good job on Thurber for most of the game, but he really stepped it up in the fourth on both the offensive and defensive end, and JT gradually pulled away. Mike Gee fouled out with two minutes left and JT up by 9, it was basically a free throw shooting contest the rest of the way. I haven't seen the stats from the game yet, but Chris Smith must have had about 30 points, and while Thurber didn't have a lot of points, he made his presence known in the fourth quarter when it really counted, with a couple of baskets, some big rebounds, and good free throw shooting.
Good win for JT, but the real tests are coming up quickly. Not to look past a road game against Bradford on 1/13, but JT will then play CS at home on 1/16, Prattsburgh away on 1/20, and A-A at home on 1/26. Right now JT appears to have the inside track to finish in the top 4 in the SCL, how they fare in these upcoming games will determine where in the top 4 they will finish.

I would have to agree with Jay Van. After watching the Wildcats last night, they are sitting in a real nice position. They have been under the radar all year. Mr. Price has built himself a pretty good ball club and it looks like they will be playing some pretty good ball by tournament time. B. Thurber has a pretty good supporting cast. If Thurber doesn't get frustrated and the "other 4" keep improving, watch out for this team.

I hope not all people from section 6 are as pathetically incompetent as you are. This is a county game, in a county thread. No one was talking about Maple Grove or winning anything other than a county title.

I agree.

mgdragons09, you must be disoriented because we haven't talked at all about states or even mentioned it. We've talked about Jasper Troupsburg being a tough team to beat in STEUBEN COUNTY or even SECTION V PLAYOFFS!

Maple Grove has been a "double secret" member of the Steuben County League since the beginning of the season!

My apologies to Animal House fans, I just couldn't resist...:D:D:D

ok mgdragons09 i'm guessing that you play on the team considering that you put the year taht your playing in your name.....first of all nobody in this thread was even talking about mg they were talking about two SCL teams that had a match....nobody said either of these two teams were going to win states or even see you at all......if there were positive points made in this thread it was about positive moments that happened in the game or how well a player played.....and where the hell does football fit into this thread why did you bring that up? It sounds like to me you need to visit some of these places in the SCL and learn some class my friend.....we all know that you are going to have a great team this year just like last year.....but i think running your mouth about how nobody can play with you is just putting a bigger target on your back and will get these teams to work harder to beat you.....so heres my opinion i'm going with either finney or pburgh to win class D.....i'm rooting for pburgh but whoever you play i'm hoping they wipe the floor with you bc of some of the comments you have made.....I hope you play pburgh bc win or lose they always show class and will shake your hand after the game no matter what...i thnk thats a lesson you need to learn from those MEN

That is the key, Thurber need to not get frustrated. If, I say IF he can keep his head in the game and play like the big man he is he will turn into a real good ball player. He is a big man he is going to get fouled, he needs to stop crying about it. Also lets not forget who started teaching these guys...he isnt there anymore. Jan. 26 could be very interesting.

Who are you talking about? Trevor Price? Jeff Ahearn? Dan Drake? Brad Hoyt? I'm pretty sure Jeff & Dan were both gone when these guys were J.V players, Trevor had them in Modified I know this because I coached against these players when I was still coaching Modified, so I'm not sure who your talking about

I think Alfred-Almond has this one in the bag. J-T relies on two players in Thurber and Smith. Once you get either of them aggravated or tired, they don't even become a factor. Their pg, Cap--, he can't go left at all, and they don't have anyone coming off the bench. I think A-A can out-shoot them and most definitely out-hustle them.
My pick: A-A by 11

Thurber and Smith will combine for 40 or more and AA has no one to stop either of them; J-T by 15

I've watched Thurber play quite a few times, and he never seemed to get aggravated and take himself out of the game. Smith is a totally different story, but I like JT in this game by about 8.

from what i have heard, A-A likes to get the ball inside. But they are up against Thurber inside, with him there, A-A wont score much inside and they will fall apart.
