I'm not certain that there's a more famous Section Five athlete at this moment in time that Jason McEllwain, but has anyone seen his Gatorade "G" ad? SI has it up and a few other places.

Wambach has the edge! I can't believe she hasn't been mentioned more on here.

Yes wambach has the edge but as far as right now I think jmac has more publicity right now. Come olympics time or world cup time and she'll have more publicity again. He's on tv during all the major sporting events right now so he has to get the edge.

I agree he never was an athlete. But when he got that one chance to be an "athlete," he did the unthinkable, which makes this story so great. I don't know how much longer the J-Mac story will be around, but Abby Wambach has a couple more years of being an elite soccer player. J-Mac will fade away eventually, but if a movie is made, it can be quite a few years from now.

I don't think anyone was questioning if it was a great moment, of course it was. But to consider J-Mac a section five athlete is a little much.

It's a flash video similar to the one you find on the Gatorade.com website and he says roughly the same thing as he does in the first YouTube video I put up. I couldn't figure out how to capture the flash file when I saw it on SI.com

when you get a chance look up the word "sarcasm" in the dictionary. Then come back, re-read my post and apply the term sarcasm. If you don't understand after reading the definition and re-reading my post, you clearly have no I.Q.

Aren't we being a little technical here in the definition of athlete? No one is comparing his athletic prowess to Abby Wambach's. They are comparing their fame.
What term should we use "celebrity by way of sport"?

how about we say, this is a pointless discussion. The kid did a terrific feat, everyone agrees on that and celebrates that. But to call him Section Five's best known athlete is a little much. He was not an athlete. He was a manager. If he was on the team as a bench player then I would say he is an athlete, but his role was that as a manager. Like other's have brought up in this thread, without argument Abby Wombach is the most well known athlete from Section Five. She is the face of women's soccer in this country, what more evidence do you need?!? Sorry, she wasn't a manager at Mercy and didn't get put into the last 4 minutes of a soccer game and score so it would be more romantic. She worked her rear-end off her entire life and is today where she is at because she worked for it!!!

True. He must have been a member of the team, you can't just pull anyone and put them into a basketball game if they aren't on the roster as a player. Don't you get a technical for that or something?

02-15-2009, 12:32 PM
if i remember correctly it was senior night. so they designated him as a player that night.....in my book, an athlete is A) someone on the team for the entire season from pre-season to post B) is an active member of a roster from the start of the season to the end.
For some of you, compare it to Billy Crystal playing for the Yankees in a spring training game last year. Same situation, even though Billy was not a bat boy all season for the Yanks. So, do you consider Billy Crystal a MLB player because he took one at bat in a game?

No one is saying J-Mac worked harder than Abby or that he is a better athlete. The topic had more to do with fame than being an athlete.
IMO, being the face of women's soccer in this country might constitue Abby as the accomplished Section V athlete ever. But to address Drew's original question about who's more well-known... it's J-Mac because of ESPN, the ESPY's, Gatorade and Magic Johnson.

If hes famous then hes a stud

I would not say he is a stud. He is a famous kid who had a great story. He is not the most know athlete from section V. I wonder people from other parts of the US that still recognized who is is. Abby Wambach is one of the top women soccer players in the world. She is deff more known that J-Mac. But J-Mac did have a great night and a great story.

Again, this might be the dumbest argument ever on this board

While this is a great story, I find it hard to think of j mac as section v's greatest athlete. I would put wambach way ahead and I would probably put someone like john Wallace ahead too. That's not ignorant or stubborn in my view as abby is one of the top womens players ON EARTH and john Wallace played top level basketball at Syracuse and the NBA. It's also hard for me to completely respect j mac as a few years ago in 2007 j mac flipped off fairports cheering section at the blue cross following athenas loss in the state qualifier to fairport. This is just an iffy discussion though
