Heard Bath had the game won and there was a controversial call in the waning seconds, apparently Bath was called for an intentional trip with the lead and Hornell went to the line and ended up winning it.

I respect Double Two's opinions immensely. He is a classy gentlemen. I won't debate his views on a player, but I feel I must respond to the officiating that was mentioned by UNC.
When you are an avid fan of one team you always seem to find calls made against your club unnerving. Being an ex-official, I can never remember coming on a public forum and complaining about the influence of officials on a contest. However, Last night it sure appeared as if one official, again ( he had us on the first Hornell-Bath game ) seemed to feel compelled to show his authority on the floor by blowing the whistle at ( what I felt ) were inappropriate times to exert control. He seems to referee with a chip on his shoulder every game I have seen him work. Maybe that's just his style ? I am told he is one of the Board's top officials so my assessment is probably an aberation or completely whacked. One or the other. Boobie, don't make a poll on this. I know how the results would go !! haha
Late first half. A Hornell player appears to travel with the basketball, no call made, Hornell bucket. Our guard Brett Sutryk, the mildest mannered player on the floor, begins to take the ball out of bounds and says to the official, " he traveled, he traveled." He gets hit with a T. We know this because the official told our coaches what the player said when they asked. Our coach then went bonkers over this technical for the comment and the fact that he thought the official missed an obvious call and then chose to bang our player with a T in that situation.. another T. We were up 3 at the time and Hornell gets 4 shots and the ball. Now we are down two. OK, one thing led to another. I'm a little perplexed but not crazy. yet. LOL. Its Hornell-Bath... this happens.
Of course emotions run high in this rivalry game and the players got crambled on the floor. It was a held ball situation with both player tugging on the ball. One goes down, the other jumps up postering. Words were exchanged between players and... Boom another technical. This time on a Hornell player. I can't judge whether it was warranted or not. Probably 50% of the time a T would be handed out here and it appeared to be a good time to exert control to me ! Maybe a double T ?
Tie game, middle of the 4th period. A Bath player drives to the basket and elevates. As he is in the air a Hornell player tries to block his shot and makes contact with the ball. While still in the air, the Bath player powers through the contact and makes the basket. Same official calls a jump ball. He said he thought that the player came back down to the ground. This is the same official who in a five point game ( when we played at Hornell ) to start the second half ( yes he did that game too ) called a made basket by our player no good because he said the player got fouled in his motion to atempt the basket not the actual shot. He later ( in the game ) apologized to one of our coaches for not knowing the rule about " continuation." So instead of getting a basket and a foul shot to be 3 down, the potential 3 point play is nullified because he admitted he did not know the rule.
The call in question was a call with about 55 seconds left in the game. Bath had just hit a deep three to put us up by one point. ( I think I have the time and scenario correct ?? ) There is a fast break and a Hornell player and Bath player get their feet tangled up and the Bath player stumbles and the Hornell player goes to the floor. This same official calls an intentional trip on Bath. Those were his exact words. To the Hornell player's credit ( they were very tough at the line down the stretch at the FT line ) he drains them both. Now Hornell is up one, Bath doesn't score. We foul, they make. end of story. I just do not understand why some calls are made that ultimately determine the outcome of the game ?? Unless they are clear violations or fouls ?? A block/charge, of course. A travel can be controversial, but it must be called if it occurs, A block of a shot attempt raises the emotions of the fans, but if it is determied to be a foul, it is a must call. But an intentional trip ? Come on. On a fast break, in that situation. Questionable at best, in my opinion. I just have a problem with this official's demeanor on the floor. His attitude appears as if " I'm gonna get ya." and boy he has sure had our number this season. I am only responding to the comment made by UNC Tarheels about the officiating to give my side of the story. Maybe those rose-colored glasses, I wear, are getting more and more foggy ?? Who knows !
This is not to demean Hornell's victory and league title in anyway. They have worked hard to achieve this and we congratulate them on their success. They worked their tails off on a poor shooting night, I thought, ( for them ) and yet they still found a way to win. They battled all night and they must have ice water in their veins the way they hit Free throws down the stretch. The sign of a good team !!. We wish them only the best in sectionals !!! I love this rivalry and at least for one game, we were able to compete with them.

This must have been a great rivalry game. But is sounds like for future games, Bath needs to put the one referee on their "We don't want you to ref our games list".

I agree that this was one of those games where it seemed like the referees played a big role in how the flow of the game went. As someone who surely wears rose colored glasses in favor of Hornell, I kept getting upset about strange calls that went against Hornell. However, there is no question that there were at least as many calls going against Bath. How in the world do you give a technical to Sutryk when he is one kid who simply goes out, plays hard and keeps his mouth shut. When that "T" was called, it came out of the blue as he certainly wasn't making a scene. We on the Hornell side all figured that he must have swore or something. To me, if the ref feels like he needs to give a technical to get the game under control, that is okay but don't give it to a kid who never says a word. There are enough kids on both teams that would be more deserving of a technical than Sutryk. That was too bad.
All that I can say about the jump ball call on the made shot by Bath was that the guy sitting next to me (also a Hornell fan) turned to me and said "Thank you Mr. Referee" and we both just laughed....definately a very questionable call.
Like I said in my earlier post, I didn't see the actual trip on the other play, but from watching that kid all night, when I saw the Hornell player go flying I immediately assumed that it was an intentional trip. This is only because the kid never stopped taunting or taking shots at Hornell all night long. It seemed like every time a Hornell kid would make a mistake, he would be right there to say something. Whether he intentionally tripped the Hornell player or not, he earned that call by his actions throughout the game. Bottom line....if he hadn't acted like he did throughout the night, the ref may have given him the benefit of the doubt. Hopefully,it can be a lesson learned for him.
Hey Rams15, I appreciate that you referred to me as "classy"....You made my day! I hope that you know the feeling is mutual. I always enjoy your posts and it was nice talking to you last night. We need to find a better meeting place than the men's room! Your boy had a heck of a game. That was a killer three he hit in the fourth quarter. When that went in I thought it would be the final dagger for Hornell. Regardless of the refs or anything else, that was a very entertaining game.

it was a awsome game, sadly the game was decided by free throws ( by refs)
i dont think hornell is going to win sectionals now that team seems to be pretty over rated after watching this game, imagine if bath had andre tyree and mike rossi and montana.

Even before reading your post, I had regrets about the posts that I had written yesterday. Even though I did not mention your son by name, I realized that the post never should have been written. First of all, saying that your son was "dirty" was wrong as the only questionable physical contact that I saw was the pick at half court. You may be right also that if a Hornell kid had set that same pick, I may have just thought it was a good hard pick. My biggest complaint about his play was what I percieved to be taunting Hornell kids after they made mistakes. With that said, I am betting that Hornell kids were saying things also. Your son plays hard and it was an emotional game. I think he is one of those kids that you hate playing against but if he is on your team, you love him. After reading your post, I checked the section V website to see the Bath roster and find out his name. I have heard of him many times as he is a very good athlete and from everything I have heard, he is also a very good kid. I hope you will accept my apology for my post. It never should have been written and it gave a very unfair and undeserving opinion of your son. Your name on this forum is ProudBathDad and from what I hear about your son, the name is a fitting one.

Refs on a power trip are my biggest pet peeve. I have had far too many in my life. I'm not proud of it but I often let them get into my head and instead of accepting it i decided to earn my fouls. One was against bath in soccer at home and i got a card for it. I didn't go in for the rest of the half lol but I can feel your pain rams15 those are the worst kinda refs you can possibly have. Its much better if they let you play more.
