Honorable Mention AGR from a lowly Class D (or DD, not sure...but low either way) 2 years in a row...easily dominates each game he plays with outstanding ball skills

no he's only a junior. And holmes is pretty good for his team and league, but he can't handle the bigger schools.

How would you know he can't handle the bigger schools? When has he faced them? He's played with the same kids on those EUSA teams

I have never heard of this kid. He is definitely not on the roster for any EUSA team, check it out on their website. Even if he were, the idea that he can handle the larger schools is funny. First off, all the talent lies in the Empire United U.S Development Academy team, which is on an entirely different level than the regular 'local' eusa club teams. Not to show any disrespect to the possibility of a D player being able to compete well, it is just that i have been reading alot of rubbish posts on here for years and you cannot extend a players success at the high school level to success at playing with and against true top players. The pace of play is so quick and the style is much different. Has anyone on here, who talks about all these players being good actually seen an ODP team play, or for that matter, the U16 or U18 Empire Academy team. This is somewhat in response to the comments about Baker. The kid is a talent, he is for sure the best pure striker in section five, no question. However, when he competes against proper Development Academy teams from across the nation he can barely get a shot off. This is not a knock against Baker, I am just attempting to explain the idea of proximity to those who think they watch a lot of soccer and thus form opinions and post of something they truly know nothing of. I mean who are you all comparing it too? What level? If you only stay in our area to watch soccer, or if you only watch h.s. soccer, your opinion need not show up on these threads. Gain knowledge and stop spitting all this verbal diarrhea.

Well since this is a high school sports thread and we are talking about high school soccer, it doesn't matter how any of the kids mentioned would do at an Elite level. All that matters is how good they do at the high school level because that is what we are talking about here.

Exactly my point, thank you. Simply b/c a kid is good in H.S., does not make him a good soccer player. It makes him, at best, a 'good' h.s. player and in the minds of those who know, means absolutely nothing as far talent, not to take away from the passion and energy that surrounds the h.s. game, b/c that is incredible. The ignorance on these threads shines brightly once again.

Derek Holmes was on the EUSA team but isn't anymore for reasons certainly not related to his skill level. You've never heard of him because the D&C is infatuated with the higher classes.

He DEFINITELY played for EUSA last year. He wasn't on their Academy team, just one of the former Jr Rhinos squads.
We're discussing players to watch next year in Section Five, not the nation. If we were doing that we'd be at BigSoccer and only one player from Upstate NY would be in the discussion, but he's at IMG Academy not a HS in NY State.
I understand some people spit out random names that aren't really relevant to the overall scene in Section Five but your hubris filled post adds just as little to the discussion as those silly submissions.
Other players to watch in Section V next year are Nick Garcia plus Simone and Cuomo from Athena.

Agreed on everything, including the names at the end. One question though. Who's at IMG Academy?

Gale Agbossoumonde. Originally from Ivory Coast or Liberia, but his family resettled in the Syracuse area and he's now with the US U-20s.

Actually, I only look at the D & C here and there. However, i do agree that they are obsessed with the larger schools, but those large districts comprise most of their reading base so in many ways they must cater to that population. In regards to your notion that i rely on a newspaper for soccer info, i must confess, you have been greatly mislead. I rely on first hand knowledge. In the last few years I have seen literally hundreds of games, of all levels, in both cities and in rural areas, in New york state and in several other states... h.s., travel, club, odp, and academy...and I have never heard Holmes. What eusa team did this kid play for, just curious considering I know the entire U17 squad and have never caught wind of this talent. Not a real big deal, the kid may be good, but my point stands loud and clear, that 'good' is all a matter of relativity. I am from a very small town and am very aware, as many of you are, that there are players who fans become obsessed with due to the small town atmosphere and lack of outside soccer influence and knowledge that those fans possess. As far as the kid who is curious as to how good I am, i am not sure what that really has to do with anything...but since you are asking me that question, it must be safe to assume that you are simply off the chain...On a side note, the Empire United Development Academy played the Columbus Crew Academy tonight at Sahlens in Buffalo, the U16's lost 1-0, the U18's were ahead 1-0 at the break. Furthermore, I found it interesting that the best soccer in our state outside of NYC was taking place tonight, with TONS of GOOD players, and i did not see any of you there watching the game...it just makes me wonder where and how such unbalanced, yet confident opinions are formed when you have nothing to gauge them against.

I watched the Development Academy games last summer when they were in town. (If I remember correctly they played the Crew at Cal-Mum) If you know of someone who's willing to sponsor me to go to all their games, I'd do it in a heartbeat.
Thing I find interesting with the DevAcademy teams is the lack of Rochester area players. Based on our "soccer prowess" one would think our players would make up 90% of the squads.

I agree. There is still a decent amount of players however. Ten on the U16's and eight on the U18's out of section five.
There are many players that could have come out to the U18's this year and did not, for some reason. However, the talent pool for the u18's out of buffalo is just ridiculous, hence the possibility of overlooking of several high quality players out of rochester. Just a thought.

You just said it yourself. There were many players who could have been on that team but didn't come out. You don't have to be on that team to be a player to watch for. And for your point about a small town being obsessed with a player, Webster isn't a small town. Second of all, he doesn't even live in Webster, he lives in one of the most populated towns (won't mention which, due to the fact that this is the internet) in monroe county

HFL is a really good team that won sectionals...but they will be down this year now that jonny day is graduating

HFL will have to rely on a more balanced attack this year as they did the past couple years before this year. Last year trinidad day and burgasser scored almost all of the goals but this year the talented junior-senior next year- class will have to step up. They return all defense and midfield for most part as well as goalie so will still be very strong. Another trip to at least semis is in order.

Your right i doubt they will be able to replace him. I think they will just have to play a different style last year they played a 433 and so this year they will probably go back to the 442 and be more defensive. He was one of the most skilled players in section v last year for sure.

Well, it's kind of hard to be experienced when you don't play in the games. Why are we talking about Josh anyways? From what I've heard, he's not even going to be on the soccer team next year!! I have kind of been fueling it though lol
