Since this forum seems to have become the place to publicize travel team tryouts I thought I’d take this opportunity to introduce myself and inform you about the Rochester Thunder 14U team which we expect to be composed of girls from throughout Western New York , why you should consider us for your daughter, and what makes our approach different
My name is Ron Boyce, Head Coach of the Rochester Thunder 14U. I have played & coached baseball and softball for 37 years and continue to play today in the Rochester Men’s Major Fast Pitch League in Henrietta. I coached Little League baseball in the Town of Greece for 8 years, Men’s softball for 4 years, GBA Girls Basketball for 4 years, and was an Asst. Coach with the 12U NY Nitro in 2008. John McManus, this team’s Manager has coached and taught professionally for over 30 years and has been coaching fast pitch for 5 years as an assistant coach with the Pittsford Cyclones, NY Nitro 12 & 16U and most recently with the 12U Penfield Cobras. He is ASA Certified and last year’s New York State Winner of the Liberty Mutual Responsible Coaching Award. John and I have developed an approach focused on strong fundamentals, thorough preparation, and individual skill development. We have worked together in the past and are excited about the opportunity to coach and manage our own team with a heavy emphasis on hard work, sportsmanship, and positive reinforcement.
We have arranged for specialized coaching assistance for this 14U team in the form of: a recent college graduate & catcher, a current college pitching coach and extensive use of local indoor training facilities during the winter. We will work on batting with the aid of state-of-the-art video swing analysis and we will use video to break down games and particularly analyze defensive play. We will break down & demonstrate essential skills to the smallest detail and build on a solid foundation. We will teach to all learning styles. We have prepared a thorough and well though out plan for this team and our approach is focused, disciplined, and goal oriented.
We are targeting primarily but not exclusively 1st Year 14U players with the goal of staying together thru the following 4 year(s) in order to play a primarily “A” and top regional & national level tournament schedule by the 2nd year. We hope to fulfill the need for a higher level of competition than is provided in the mostly “B” level local tournament circuit. Players will not have to “play up” to challenge themselves or to find a higher level of competition. In turn can they can benchmark their ability against the best players their own age.
We are looking for players willing to work hard on fundamental skills and constant refinement in order to achieve their true potential. A player for whom softball is a passion & probably their primary sport, for whom playing travel softball is not a matter of if I play but which is the best team. A 14U Thunder player should be prepared to dedicate themselves to a competitive and disciplined approach to the game.
Team bonding, fundraising and community service will also be activities we will pursue. As at team, we will participate in a charity outreach. There will also be fun social events planned during off-season such as a ski outing, team dinners for fun or as a setting for chalk talks and breaking down film, as we believe some classroom work is essential at this level to attain our goals. In addition, we hope to invite a college player or a local umpire to join us to share a pasta dinner, their experiences, and answer questions.
A key objective is to develop the complete player and quality citizens through conditioning, nutrition, and skills. We will also help them become students of the game with instruction in rules as well as the whys and wherefores pertaining to offensive and defensive strategy with the hope that they can explain it to current and future teammates. We feel the better a player understands the game, the better they will perform on the field.
We are looking for players at all positions. We will carry a roster of no more than 12 which in our experience is an ideal roster size to maximize playing time and yet have coverage for players who are unavailable due to injury or prior commitments.
Our goal is to play in 5-7 tournaments, one this fall, and then the rest next summer. Travel will be throughout upstate New York with a possible foray or two into Pennsylvania or New England. We will most likely not play in a league; preferring instead to play scrimmages or schedule practices.
The cost for the program will be in around $500 per player and covers uniforms, bags, tournament fees, insurance, specialized coaching and facility rentals. Fundraising will supplement player fees.
This is a full year commitment with a short layoff in late fall thru the holiday season. We will start up again after the first of the year and go through school ball season.
Please call or email with any questions or to pre-register and I will send a player profile for you to complete. Be sure and forward this information to any players you think may be interested in playing with us this summer or better yet, come give us a look – expect to be impressed!
Thank you.
