It's early and football is going on, but I had a good talk with a star basketball player today.
Attica has Wolfley, OA has Davis and ND has Francis, but can one of the other teams beat them?
Elba has Zambito, Woodworth and Hoover and will be strong, but Attica, OA and ND are going to be tough.
It's a few months away, but basketball is always fun. Can Elba, or one of the other GR teams, crack that top three?

Hilly, I believe if Elba is disciplined enough and they can stay healthy they would have a shot at ND and the rest. Should be a great hoops season, but come on, who can think of hoops right now when football season is in full swing!

You know how much I love football, but hoops is fun too. There are great kids on Elba's team, but Attica might not lose a game and O-A won't be far behind with Davis. Notre Dame is always good because Rapone is an awesome coach. I don't care who wins or who is the best team, but I can predict who I thin is. Attica will be great this year.

Similar to last year, it all comes down to the guard play of Elba. Hoover and Woodworth will be the back bone of this team, but what happens if they get into foul trouble? I know it's a different year, but unless the guard play is improved, I don't see them beating ND.

Maybe Im biased, but I believe that Rocco Zambito can flat out play hoops..Hes quick on his feet, has a decent shot and can drop a hot dime in no time! Hoover should've played more last season, but with him returning with Ian Woodworth, they have a chance to be a special group..They big 3 cannnot get hurt or into foul trouble for ecs to succeed..I do believe that ND will give fits to a few teams out there, but it should be an entertaining season for sure.

Ian and Casey are great kids and great athletes, but Wolfley is a man. I also think he will have a better supporting cast this year. I'm thinking Attica is the team to beat in the GR. I like to see everybody in the mix, it makes things fun, but Attica will be tough to beat. ND and Oakfield should be very good, and I think Elba won't be far behind, but there is nobody as good as Wolfley in the league.
It will be a lot of fun to see if any team can beat them and I know everybody will be gunning for Attica.

Wolfley is by far the best player in the GR. I've been to many Attica Basketball games and consistenly Wolf dominates. The supporting cast is basically going to be the same as last year. Keicher and Dupois play great at the guard spots. Nash is a beast on the gridiron and the court, Repka has been clutch in many situations, and Sheffield is another solid big man. I'm expecting big things from Attica this year.

I have to go with the coach on this one..I watched plenty of Elba games last season and thought Rock Z. was a nice little point guard who distributed the ball very well.

Year in and year out I use ND as the barometer of what is going to happen in the GR and one of the neat things that has been happening in recent years is their home and home against Prattsburgh. Coach Burke at Prattsburgh always has fantasitcally competitive teams even when they might be down from a personnel standpoint (this is certainly not one of those years!). I think ND goes there early this year so that gives us some perspective where they are. Interestingly, Alexander, who was middle of the pack last year but with big wins over Attica and Elba is going to participate in Prattsburgh's Christmas tournament. That may give us an idea of the separation among the top echelon in GR and the rest.
Personally I think ND will struggle early. They are going to miss Geise big time but Rapone will have them playing consistently after the midway point and they will challenge for the league as always. Did Elba lose anyone? Woodworth and Hoover have the ability to be dominant in the paint. I think off guard play will be key. I agree somewhat with Coach Z on Rocco, but I think the teams that have the ability will pressure him to give the ball up and make someone else run the offense. I love James Davis' game at OA. I think he has the most pure basketball skills in the league. I was surprised that OA was so up and down last year. I picked them to be at the top. They've lost some size but had a solid JV program. Attica, Attica Attica. Wolfley is clearly the dominant player in the league. With his size and skill they should be a lock. They have lots returning but ended up in the middle of the pack last year. I think his teamates waited too much on him to be the savior. With a years seasoning, the guard play should be improved and they are going to need someone (or 2) to be in the 10+ points per game realm in order to open up the floor for Derrick. He's always going to get his, but other teams in the league can live with him getting 25 and 15 boards as long as no one else is scoring. Having said all that I'm picking Attica.

That's what everyone has been doing so far. Like you ref, everyone is criticizing Attica and our other players besides Wolfely. But still picking them. We have a great central piece in Wolfley and all the other guys a good players too. I'm pretty sure Keicher had 10+ a game last year. I'm not positive on that, though.

Attica is in Class BB and no matter how they do in the regular season, they're going to have to go through the likes of Hornell, Charlotte & Dr. Freddie-Thomas and I don't see them beating any of those teams, maybe Thomas because they lack size but I think Hornell & Charlotte would both be too much for Attica to handle. I have been wrong before and I honestly haven't seen Attica play in person, so I'm not an expert on them by any means I'm simply speculating.

We usually never fare well in the two big guys sports of football and basketball. Two years ago Attica had an undefeated season in the GR, and in the second round of sectionals, bye first round, we lost to SOTA. Your right there ,UNC about the our sectional chances. But, there have been bigger upsets, and I think this Attica team could make a run into sectionals

TopShelf - I wasn't criticizing the other Attica players just stating that my observation from last year is that they appeared to wait for him to generate offense. That's tough not to do when you have that type of player in the line-up. It takes time to learn to play with a talent like that. If one or two others can average 10+ a game I really like Attica's chances in the GR. If not, they may end up middle of the pack again. I'll bet the Keicher's and Repka's on the team are more of threat this year than last. That's why I'm picking Attica.

If they were in the GR ... no. The GR will blow away Livingston this year. I expect Attica, Notre Dame and Oakfield (when Davis gets healthy) to be awesome and I hear about a 6-9 kid from Holley which will make them solid. The GR is going to be really good this year and Livingston (even D1) would be lucky to beat the top GR teams.
Dan Dickens is a good coach and a great friend, but I don't see his boys being able to compete with ND, Attica or a healthy OA. Heck, even Elba should be in the mix. This is going to be one of the best GR hoops seasons yet.

The Livingston might be down this year so it's pretty accurate that GR might hold its own but in the past 20 years it wouldn't have been close. The Livingston has been head and shoulders above the GR for so long its about time the GR catches up. If you took the top five GR teams the past 20 years and played them head to head against Livingston my guess would be 85-15 Livingston. GR basketball has NEVER been considered any good, so don't spout off because one year you MIGHT hold your own!!!!

...however, your tone is all wrong. It is no secret that LIV league was stronger than the GR. It also is no secret that the FL east and west are way stronger than LIV. Thats the way things have been for quite some time if you want to base it on an average strength of the leagues. I've always been a great fan of LIV, Is there any reason for this downturn in talent? Some schools seem to have just fallen way off in a hurry. Don't get me wrong, I know that there are still some very good teams, just wondering if this is one of the normal cycles leagues (schools) go through or a bigger problem? Is there talent in the pipeline at the JV level? To me it looks like this down turn in overall level of play is in its 2nd or 3rd year. It also looks to have some staying power unless there is some talent that has been hiding in the Mod and JV levels.
And lastly, NEVER say NEVER like you own the word. You have a point of view and other people have their point of view. WHY is YOURS more IMPORTANT than anyone elses?

Take it for what it's worth overnback — that's why.
As for the FL West being stronger, are you joking? Honeoye, South Seneca and Bloomfield couldn't last a year in Livingston's hoops league.
As for the downward spiral, I agree. Hopefully we can turn the corner this year. It's been too long since a Livingston team has won a sectional title.

That's good to see Wolfley getting some support. Michael Bolton (sorry, couldn't pass on that one) is somebody I'm not too familiar with and Kaiser is a good kid, so that's a bonus. I figured Keicher would be the second best player on that team.
I know Kaiser a bit from football and he's a great kid, but I'm not going to expect him to score in double figures that often because he'll be matching up against some pretty good big men in the GR this year.
Another big body definitely will help clear things for the Wolf though.
I really do love Attica sports, but they break my heart every year. I hope this can be different. I'm huge on the regular season because it's my job to make it interesting for people, but I'd love to see the Blue Devils actually do something in sectionals.

TurnTwo's Attica Scouting Report:
PG- Dustin Keicher - Sr. - Scrappy point guard with excellent court vision. His jump shot isn't at Repka's level but he isn't afraid to drive the lane against the big boys.
G- Cole Repka - Sr. - One of the most underrated players in the GR. When he's on he has one of the purest shots in the league. Solid athlete and ball handler; selfless player.
G- Shawn Dupuis - Jr. - Great athlete and competitor. Can sometimes be careless with the ball but he is a very coachable player and just an all around athlete.
C- Derek Wolfley - Sr. - Arguably the best player the GR has ever seen. Broke school scoring record half way through Junior Season and is on pace to score well over 1500 on his career.
F- Ryan Nash - Sr. - Aggressive competitor; doesn't let anyone get in his way. His foul shot has greatly improved over the off-season and if he can stay healthy it will be a great season for him.
Coming off the bench:
G- Tate Westermeier - So. - Brother of Guy Westermeier who ranks among Attica's Top 10 all time scorers. Brings the same competitive fire. Good ball handler but shines from beyond the arc. Serious threat from 3 point range.
F- Mike Kaiser - Sr. - First year back on the hardwood since 7th grade. Excellent athlete with deceptive speed (4.7 in the 40). May struggle early on getting into foul trouble but will be a key player in the lane.
G/F- Ryan Bolton - Sr. - Hard-working senior who gained valuable Varsity experience as a Junior last season. Performs well in the clutch and when he is on he has a decent jump shot. Just dropped 20 in a scrimmage at Perry and it wouldn't surprise me to see him squeak his way into the starting lineup at some point this season.
G- Ryan Meisner - Jr. - Performed well at the JV level last year and will gain valuable experience this season. Excellent ball handler with good court vision.

I know Davis will be out until late Dec. He had a minor set-back with his injury. O-A is going to try be competitive (which I believe shouldn't be a problem) and hopefully get Davis totally healthy and in rhythm by playoff time.

Elba was 5-2 before the "trio" got separated due to suspentions and injuries...they're back together now and could make some noise in sectionals.

Agreed...If coach P can get them playing together they can make some noise. Casey, rocco and Ian are nice players and while they were out, Colin Stucko and Sonny guiliano really came into their own, and dont forget about Big Phil Osroski who is a very nice player, very strong and underrated at times...Good Luck coach P and to the Lancers, make some noise!
