Talksback Exclusive Interview with Hornell Football Coach Gene Mastin
1) What type of expectations do you have for this year’s team?
Only that we will prepare hard for every game and try to qualify for playoffs. At this point in the season, we are only seeking to get better every day.
2) Who are some key losses from last year’s team and how can you overcome those losses?
We lost some good linemen to graduation- Fran Matacale, Tad Lawrence, Rob Donovan.
3) Did your team put in a good off-season of workouts, and or lifting, and how many kids would you say were hitting the weights each week?
We had over 30 players in the weight room every day this summer (carrying 35 on the team). Off-season program, which started in January, was excellent.
4) What players will you be counting on for your program to play at a high level?
We have a number of new linemen, who have progressed well. We have much more athleticism than last season. Austin Dwyer had 1,550 yards in 9 games, so we are hoping for big things from him.
