Top Newcomers: Shane Skinner (Soph.), Mark Burdick (Fr.), Jared Smith (8th grade, F)

Outlook: Coach Mike Zilker had a lot of spots to fill even before goalie Brett Rapan switched to football this year, but still sees cause for some cautious optimism.
“It’s going to be tough,” said Zilker, “but if we keep playing like we’re practicing, we should have a decent season.”
Zilker is looking for big contributions from sophomore Shane Skinner, freshman Mark Burdick, eighth-grade striker, Jared Smith, and junior Alan Hitchcock takes over for Rapan in net and has been impressive.

Head Coach: Josh Tompkins (5th season)

Last Year: 7-12 (Lost to No. 8 York in first round of Class C playoffs)

Key Losses: Jordan Zalar, Brandon Haas

Top Returners: David Perry (Sr. GK), Curtis Borden (Sr. F), Kody Beil (Jr.), Caleb Holmes (Soph.), Rob Wight (Soph.), Corey Haas (Soph.)

Outlook: Coach Josh Tompkins two biggest issues heading into the 2009 season — replacing starting goalie Jordan Zalar and leading scorer Brandon Haas, both of whom graduated ... Senior David Perry moves from the gridiron to take Zalar’s place in net ... Tompkins hopes senior Curtis Borden can be one of the players to pick up the scoring slack left by Brandon Haas.
“We’re quite young, but the kids have talent and have been showing good soccer mentality in practice,”Tompkins said. “I think we’ll be okay.”

Outlook: One of the toughest coaching assignments of the upcoming season has to belong to the Jaguars’ Wayne Beckemeyer, who graduated a dozen seniors — including his entire defense that allowed only 14 goals the entire season ... The Jaguars started 0-2, losing to perennial powers Jasper-Troupsburg and Alfred-Almond by a combined 3-1 scored, including 2-1 to A-A in overtime, before going 14-0-3 over their next 17 before losing to eventual DD champion Wheatland-Chili in the semifinals.
“There’s no doubt we lost a lot of senior leadership,” says Beckemeyer.“We’ve got a handful of seniors back, but there’s still a lot of rebuilding to do.”
Assuming the Jags aren’t going to be doing it with defense this year, Beckemeyer will be relying heavily on the scoring efforts of seniors Chayse Scott and Dathan Garfield.
“The burden is going to fall on them,” said Beckemeyer. “Although another senior, Darren Bigelow, has shown a lot of quickness on defense and junior goalie Joe Demick is looking pretty good.”
