"One must not put a lot of weight into these rankings.

For example...Sutherland...their only tough games this year are probably fairport (3-2-2) and Victor (5-3-1) and they won each game by only one goal."

I'm guessing you saw neither of these games, as Sutherland led Fairport 2-0 within minutes of the start, and was ahead 3-1 near the end. Remember that Fairport has three times as many students as Sutherland :). Sutherland was ahead of Victor 2-0 for a good bit of the game, and Victor had next to no scoring opportunities compared with more than a dozen for Sutherland. Sutherland largely had the better of the play in both games, which is one reason they won each game. They also led Class AA/AAA Rush-Henrietta (one of only a few undefeated teams in the county, albeit with six ties) 3-0 before allowing a 3-3 tie. Sutherland has two of the three leading scorers in the Monroe County league, despite playing three of their first eight games against much larger schools. Not too shabby.

So who would you rank first?

Not Aquinas, who is ranked second, I'd hope. Common opponents? Aquinas tied Fairport 1-1 and tied Victor 1-1, both whom Sutherland defeated.

Surely these rankings are more for amusement than anything else, but it's hardly worth complaining about Sutherland's ranking when they clearly have the best performance to date amongst the Class A teams. Which is why (plus Pittsford's reputation, due to Mendon as a frequent state champion) that the coaches and sportswriters have also ranked Sutherland number 1 in the state in Class A.

All of which counts for zilch, come sectionals, but it's the proper allocation of credit for accomplishment at this point in the season, don't you think? At this moment in time, Sutherland has played the best of any Class A team in the region, and there's no arguing against that without special pleading for one's personal favorite team.
