The first real test of the season is this weekend at Genesee Community College, the GCC Cougar Invite. GCC is also the site of the Section V Championships November 7th.

This is a new course and it should be exciting. With only six weeks to go before sectionals, teams want to see how they match up in their class and possibly against teams from other classes.

Varsity Race Schedule:
10:00 Girls D/DD
10:30 Boys D/DD
12:30 Girls B/C
1:00 Boys B/C
2:30 Girls A/AA
3:00 Boys A/AA

I think it will be interesting to see if Geneva and HFL move up to A/AA which they have done in the past.

I'm interested to see how Pavilion, Geneseo, ND match up this weekend. Pavilion looks very good so far in their other invites but they haven't been tested too much yet.

I'm not sure what it's gonna look like, but I know it will be different from the counties course

I know that they put some hills in and made it more challenging.
It is still hard to tell how good teams are until they run the sectional course. It is a true 5k!! So many courses even for invites are not 5k, and you get silly fast times.
I would also like to see how Pav ND and Gen stack up. Good luck and see you there.

To answer a few questions...HFL is moving up...Geneva is not

The course is pretty fair. There is a severe hill right near two miles

QFE ...

What did everyone think of the course?

I thought it was laid out well. Some hills that are worse than they look. The wind could get really nasty come NOV. It is really wide open where you can see everyone, which could be bad if you are used to disappearing into the woods.

How about the R-H boys? Waiting until the last 1k to kick and blow everyone away.

Should be another outstanding year for the program. Missed race, but got step by step.

I think we all know the Boys at RH were going to be good, but I was extremely impressed with the Lady Royal Comets ... Quite the upfront pack they have going on. Although they don't have the 1-2 punch of Lembo-Mantilla or the McCormicks, it seems like they have the deepest 4th-5th-6th out of anyone in section v. It looked like it was going to be CA Braves easily with exception to Penfield and maybe Fairport in class A - but this is the second week in a row that RH has handled Penfield.

Should Canandaigua start to take notice?

So I guess GCC is now a road 5k pretty much... Sweet... Except not.

How much of the hill is left?

A change in the curse that had better not be there for Sectionals is the hair-pin turn at 1.5 miles (ish). It is located on the steepest decline on the course. There is also a hunk of asphalt that the runners needed to negotiate (in spikes) as they head back up the hill. I hope these changes are temporary--at least that STUPID turn. Section V will get laughed at if that turn exists at when it is our turn to host states.

Another problem is that many teams pay a STIFF price for this meet. A good majority attend ONLY for the fact that it its our Sectional course. The course needs to be exactly the same--or we are being robbed.

I agree, the course is a road race, it now has a very unsafe turn like you said and that finish had too many turns just before that last 200M. Not happy....BRING BACK MARCUS WHITMAN, that was a great XC course.
FYI: I asked about the changes and that is going to be the sectional course on Nov 5th.

Yeah what was the cause for the course change? The old course was fine the way it was. I know that they have been wanting to change the course for awhile but why? What was wrong with the old course?

Old McDonald wouldn't let them use his field like he allowed in the past.

With all of the acres on campus, that's a poor excuse for having a gratuitous little "out & back" with a hairpin turn that is dangerous in dry conditions. And losing half of the signature hill makes this a much less challenging course.

From what I heard - they did not know they had to make changes until maybe a day or two before the meet they were told that some previous areas were off limits. They also planned on making and extended front section to avoid the hairpin turn, but GCC also told them they couldn't do that.

Not saying the changes are good, just saying they did what they had to do in the short time they had.

I would like to see us move to a course that would be more stable ... seems like every year there is the possibility of changes at GCC...

I agree coach, but that turn on a sidewalk should have been thought out a little better, short time period or not. I'd rather run 30m short than to have to make that turn. I like the overall feel for GCC, facility is good, awards area is ok (better than being outside), good viewing of the course/race and its all grass. The layout of the course needs to be more stable like you said. Hey Marcus Whitman was changed a few times too. Campus construction sometimes will do that to a course.

They should make Mendon East the sectional course. It would be a tight start, but after running it today it really would be a challenging way to determine who deserves to go to states. I think that and Mendon West are 2 of the best courses around, and I'd say we should do it at west if the start was larger and could support more people. I just don't think GCC is a good indicator on who should go considering VVS is monumentally harder than GCC...

That hairpin turn was a challenge, and I agree it is of concern, but I saw no falls there on Saturday. For a Sectional course however, it needs to be omitted as the weather in November can be iffy.

The suggestion of Mendon East as a Sectional course is sane - a very challenging course and a great test - but parking is the concern - just no where to park the cars and Section V couldn't charge an admission fee there.

Our third runner went down on the asphalt. That hairpin turn had better not be there for Sectionals. It may be THE most ridiculous turn I've seen in my XC experience (which dates to the late 60s).

Sorry that happened. I had told our runners to ease into it and NOT PLANT on the pavement - take it wide if necessary. It really took the benefit of a downhill right out. Even so our guys had trouble negotiating.

I think that Section V will listen to the complaints and make a change.

Complaints on talk forums will go nowhere with Section V. Coaches need to express their concerns with their league chairpersons and they in turn will go the the sectional coordinators.

Yep, I already spoke with chairs from two different leagues. And since it is a safety issue, there is no way it won't be addressed (can you imagine the $s to be had if you are hurt on this turn at Sectionals? Won't need a D-I ride!).

Looks like the concerns have been addressed. New map posted here

If weather is decent and minimal hill, this will be a FAST race.
