The following are my thoughts and opinions. Maybe they are like-minded, maybe they are not.

As an official in Section V, I get to see and hear first hand what NYS highly recommends us to do. Personally, I do not think that they do enough to ensure that their wishes are granted. I would like to a more severe penalty imposed on players/coaches and teams that do things that are unsportsmanlike. I would also like to see penalties imposed on officials that don't enforce the sportsmanship rules by the letter of the rule. In my opinion there are no gray areas when it comes to sportsmanship. If you look through the news, internet posts and various websites, you can see that there are more violent happenings at games than ever before. Perhaps it's because they are more frequently reported than prior years, but my experience says no. We as a society have become more violent over time.

You are seeing players punch other players. Players assulting officials. Parents assaulting coaches and so on. These actions can not be tolerated at any level.

I find it appalling that there are officials that are afraid to enforce the rules because they of their ratings, which will then effect their schedules. I find it appalling that coaches ask officials to cut them some slack because their player didn't realize that coming off the bench and engaging in a fight was against the rules........seriously. I find it appalling that a coach would ask for leniency becasue their player was tossed for fighting with only a few seconds left in the game. These are real scenarios folks. If doing the right thing causes you to lose a few games from your schedule is wrong, it's really small price to pay for doing the right thing.

Officials, coaches, parents, fans and administrators all need to unite against unsportsmanlike events. If you get into a fight, you shouldn't be allowed to participate again in that sport for the remainder of the year. One game is not nearly enough.

Nice to see a local kid in NCAA athletics expected to make an impact...

CUBA- Daemen College is preparing for a significant rise and looked to Cuba-Rushford’s most prolific scorer to help with the transition.
Holmes has signed with Daemen College to play soccer starting this fall and pursue a Ph.D in physical therapy. Daemen is moving from the NAIA to the NCAA and Holmes is part of the school’s first-ever Division II soccer recruiting class.
One thing Holmes can do is score — which he did at a record pace at Cuba-Rushford. Holmes holds the school records for career goals (70), assists (60), and points (200). as a five-year varsity starter for the Rebels.
Holmes led all of Section V this past fall in scoring with 70 points and his 26 goals trailed only Webster Schroeder’s Anthony Rozzano (29) in 2011.
However, making the transition from high school to college athletics is an adjustment in any sport.
“The speed of the game, by far, and the physicality,” said Holmes on what he expects the biggest adjustments to be at the college level.
Holmes, though, doesn’t see himself simply as a scorer.
“I’m versatile,” said Holmes. “I think I can fit into whatever spot they want me to fit into.”
He also isn’t just a great soccer player.
Holmes is Cuba-Rushford’s National Honor Society president with a grade point average of 99.4 and enrolled in five advanced placement courses. He also is a youth court judge and will go to Daemen with two academic scholarships (tuition exchange and presidents’ award), along with the soccer scholarship.
“I really chose Daemen because of their physical therapy program,” said Holmes. “They have a doctorate program and they have NCAA Division II soccer now, so it’s a good opportunity.”
Holmes also felt right at home in his first time around the team.
“The coach and the guys on the team, they’re all great guys,” said Holmes. “When I went to stay with them in recruit camp it was a really good experience.”
Holmes is a three-time team MVP and the reigning Allegany County Player of the Year. He has made the Section V All-Tournament team twice and been an Allegany County 1st-team All-Star three times and a 2nd-team selection once. He also has been a Big 30 All-Star and a two-time Brock Young Memorial Award winner.
Holmes was a part of one of the highest-scoring teams in Section V last season. Cuba-Rushford had three of the top five scorers in Section V, including Caleb Holmes’ younger brother, Carl, who was tied for third in goals (23) and was third in scoring (60). Rob Wight had 57 points (21 goals) for the Rebels last season, good for fifth in Section V last fall.
According to the Daemen men’s soccer roster, Holmes will be the fifth Section V player to play for the Wildcats, joining Brandon Hank (Greece Athena), Devin Kinney (Hinsdale), Zach Blum (Churchville-Chili), and Max Drexler (Greece Olympia).

"Four former Section V stars will play in NCAA Division I softball regional games this weekend, and all four played on the TC Tremors travel team out of Binghamton: Fairport’s Stacy Kuwik, a junior at Syracuse; Fairport’s Rosie Roessel, a junior at Lehigh; Pittsford Mendon’s Maddie Reese, a freshman at Arkansas; and Victor’s Michelle Prong, a sophomore at Stanford"

How such an acheivement doesn't get more recognition is curious but at least this gets a mention in today's paper. For those that know about college softball and the varied levels of play from Conference to Conference at all 3 levels (D-1, D-2 & D-3) this is quite a story. It is one thing to have the ability to get recruited by a Division 1 program and whole other to get recruited by a team in a power conference. A true testament to the hard work and sacrifice of these young ladies and the schedule they took part in while with the Tremors.

Here in Rochester we are fortunate now to have the support of Lou Bishop of the Tremors who has guided the Battery Lightning organization and partnered us with the Tremors under the Bluechip Softball umbrella. This has opened doors for us to help area kids get the exposure and recognition that area players could not get in the past. That can be seen in the recent commitments and signings we have experienced in the 3 short years since gaining Lou's support. While it is quite an accompishment to get recruited to play Division 1 softball contrary to popular belief it is not what it is all about for us and this can be seen in our "Commitments/Signings" section of our website (www.leaguelineup.com/lightningelite) where we are equally proud of our players college selections no matter what NCAA level. If the situation allows to play D-1 and the school makes sense for all non-softball reasons then great, but for us it is about preparing kids to be successful at whatever level of college softball they play and help guide the kids through the recruiting years as they hopefully make a "college decision" not just a softball decision.

Thanks to the ability of our players and the support of the Tremors we are fortunate to play at some of the more exclusive Showcase events (Stop DWI, Colorado Fireworks...) against some of the best travel softball organizations where college coaches come in droves to evaluate a player live compared to what they see on paper or in a video. A true evaluation without any "false hope" or risk of uninspired watered down play that can be seen/fostered at lower level travel ball events and on some HS teams which is why these coaches generally stay away from those other than occasionally catching local HS games in their area after their season is completed.

Best of luck to the before mentioned girls and very happy to see some long overdue recognition for these girls and the Tremors organization in today's paper!

We all know the only info put into paper is hits and pitching lines. What is not seen in paper but every bit important is defensive plays. As you know it is hard to turn double plays in HS softball. Yesterday Athena first baseman Kelsey Johnson turned three double plays from firstbase nailing two runners at home (6-3-2 & 5-3-2) and one at third (6-3-5). Kelsey's quick feet and quick release plus knowledge of the game helped make these plays.

There is more to being a Coach than winning games. Unfortunatly, I'm afraid some, (not all) of these young lads have been allowed to move in a negative direction.

Im not sure yet, what the vote count was, but sports which was included ( I believe ) as a separate item was voted down this evening in Hornell. I do not know if this will be or can be put up for another vote ( like standard budget procedures ) or whether the board will approve a fundraising campaign to support all sports ? Very interesting and sad development. Unfortunately, this is one sign of the budgetary woes across the state. Maybe someone from Hornell can clarify.

The Cougars scored early goals in the first half to take the lead. McQuaid bounced back and had a great second half to beat HFL. Knights win 8-6. Click on the photo for the rest of the pics...
